.World AIDS Day: Songs About Those Gone Too Soon
Things have changed drastically since the world first heard of AIDS. We understand so much more about the condition, but despite many scientific advances and laws to protect people living with HIV, some still do not know the facts about how to protect themselves and others from HIV. Stigma and discrimination remain a reality for many people living with HIV. World AIDS Day is important as it reminds the public that HIV has not gone away – there is still a vital need to raise money, increase awareness, fight prejudice and improve education.
World AIDS Day is held on 1 December each year and is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died. World AIDS Day was the first ever global health day and the first one was held in 1988.
Around 100,000 are currently living with HIV in the UK and globally an estimated 34 million people have HIV. More than 35 million people have died from the virus, making it one of the most destructive pandemics in history.
Many have lost loved ones in this fight. It doesn’t matter if you are rich or poor. Some names and faces have never been known, while there are some famous names who have died from AIDS such as Freddie Mercury, Rock Hudson, Anthony Perkins, Amanda Blake, Robert Reed and of course the face of AIDS, Ryan White.
To commemorate World AIDS Day, here are some songs that were written for or inspired by someone with HIV or who lost the fight with AIDS.“Gone Too Soon” – Michael Jackson
Although composed and written in 1983 by Larry Grossman and Buz Kohan, the song was popularized by Michael Jackson as a dedication to his beloved friend Ryan White, who’s battle with AID gained world-wide attention. Ryan became the poster child for this disease after he was banned from his school because of the fear of his illness. Michael befriended Ryan and supported his family with his love and friendship. The song was first released on December 1, 1993, on World AIDS day after Ryan’s death in 1990. Michael performed the song in memory of Ryan at President Clinton’s inauguration for AIDS awareness and funding. The song has also been dedicated to Princess Diana after her death and to Michael himself.“Together Again” – Janet Jackson
According to the liner notes of her 1997 album The Velvet Rope, this song was inspired by a friend Janet lost to AIDS and as well as a piece of fan mail she received from a young boy in England who had lost his father. Janet has performed this song on all of her tours since then.“One Sweet Day” – Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men
Released in 1995, this song was written by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men. The song is about losing a loved one, and eventually seeing them, once again, in heaven one day, and how the protagonist took their presence for granted and misses them. Both Carey and Boyz II Men wrote the song about specific people in their lives to include sufferers of the AIDS epidemic so globally prevalent at the time.“The Last Song” – Elton John
The One was written by John and Bernie Taupin about an estranged father who returns to his see his gay son, who is dying of AIDS. The song is the second single from Elton’s, 1992 album The One. The song was used during a closing montage featuring people who died of AIDS at the end of the 1993 film, “And The Band Played On.”
“The Last Song” marked the first of John’s American singles to benefit his AIDS foundation. Taupin faxed the lyrics to him in Paris, shortly after Freddie Mercury died. “I was crying all the time as I wrote the music”, John told The Advocate, “and it was very hard for me to sing it”. The song tells of an estranged father coming to terms with the sexuality of his gay son, who is dying of an AIDS-related illness. Originally titled “Song for 1992″, it was renamed to avoid dating it.”Hold On” – Sarah McLachlan
In a 2014 interview with the Huffington Post, Sarah reveals that Hold On is inspired by a real-life story: “I saw a documentary on a woman who’s husband contracted the HIV virus and it was a great and tragic love story. She took care of him up until he died and her passion, empathy and strength was inspirational.”“Il Adore” – Boy George
Boy George’s critically acclaimed 1995 glam rock-themed album Cheapness And Beauty features “Il Adore,” a heart-felt track about a friend on his deathbed in a hospital. The tempo picks up for the first time with strings and the hook “It’s hard to imagine him as he used to be, laughing, screaming, tumbling queen, like the most amazing light show you’ve ever seen.” In the video, the Culture Club front man flips through a photo album with pictures from his past, including one of the late performance artist Leigh Bowery. The Boy portrayed Bowery in the musical Taboo. Cheapness And Beauty coincided with O’Dowd’s tell-all autobiography Take It Like a Man.

Ne sappiamo molto di più , ma nonostante i molti progressi scientifici e le leggi per proteggere le persone che vivono con l'HIV, certi ancora non sanno come proteggere se stessi e gli altri dall' HIV. La stigmatizzazione e la discriminazione restano una realtà per molte persone che vivono con l'HIV. La giornata mondiale contro l'AIDS è importante in quanto ricorda al pubblico che l'HIV non è andato via - c'è ancora un bisogno vitale di raccogliere fondi, sensibilizzare, combattere i pregiudizi e migliorare le informazioni.
La giornata mondiale contro l'AIDS si tiene il 1 ° dicembre di ogni anno ed è una opportunità per le persone di tutto il mondo di unirsi nella lotta contro l'HIV, mostrare il loro sostegno per le persone che vivono con l'HIV e per ricordare le persone che ne sono morte.
