Michael Jackson Estate Settles Dispute With 'Thriller' Director John Landis
The sides resolve on confidential terms a three-year-old case involving profits and rights on the 1983 music video.
The estate of Michael Jackson tells The Hollywood Reporter that it has put the finishing touches on a deal with director John Landis and producer George Folsey Jr. that resolves litigation concerning net profits on the late singer's "Thriller" video as well as a fight over a previously planned musical theater production of the hit song/video.
In January 2009, Landis and Folsey sued Jackson and his company, Optimum Productions, claiming they were still owed money for work on the 14-minute video. Then, Jackson died in June of that year, prompting anyone with a debt to file a claim on his estate. Hundreds of claims were made, including from Landis and Folsey, who alleged that $2.3 million was owed.
Most of those claims have been resolved. In July, the estate told a Los Angeles Superior Court that it had made enough money to pay off the estimated $500 million of debt that Jackson left when he died.
Paying down the debt was one of the chores of executors John Branca and John McClain. Resolving old litigation has been another.
As part of Jackson's litigation with Landis, the director also asserted that he owned at least 50 percent of the "separated rights" to the "Thriller" video, which he said entitled him to "dramatic rights" derivations like stage adaptations.
Before Jackson's death, the King of Pop had made a deal with The Nederlander Organization to produce a musical version of "Thriller," which originally was made into a 14-minute music video in 1983 at the cost of $800,000 and went onto to become what many consider the most successful music video of all time. In the lawsuit to stop the production, Landis said that Jackson had gotten about $400,000 for the right to do this.
But that specific production never got off the ground, and in 2010, Nederlander sued the estate for preventing it from mounting a stage musical despite its deal. (Instead, the estate licensed a traveling Cirque du Soleil show called Immortal, which has been very successful.)
Meanwhile Landis' claims continued, but the sides eventually were able to reach an agreement, on which a probate judge has already signed off.
On Friday, the estate released a statement to THR indicating that the settlement had become firm:
"The Estate of Michael Jackson, John Landis and George Folsey Jr. have reached an amicable settlement of the actions that were pending in the Los Angeles Superior Court relating to the legendary short motion picture Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' and the documentary The Making of Michael Jackson's 'Thriller.' The settlement terms are confidential."
This wraps up litigation over "Thriller." Earlier this year, the estate also made a settlement with Ola Ray, the actress who played Jackson's date in the music video.

I’m sure many of you guys, like myself,
grew up in the 80′s and there is probably
one single thing that possibly helped us
full our love for the genre. I’m talking about
the music video for Michael Jackson’s hit
song ‘Thriller‘. The music video has been
regarded by many as the greatest music
video of all-time, and that comes from the
ever awesome John Landis.
The music video was more a horror short, but it worked so well, and it gave me, as I’m sure it did you, a ticket into the world of horror. It was amazing, and kudos to John Landis for bringing such musical horrors to our screens around the globe.
Now, I’m sure you guys are aware of the many debts that Michael Jackson owed, and while he sadly past away a few years back, all debts have been worked through his estate. One being a deal concerning John Landis and producer George Folsey Jr.concerning net profits on the late singer’s “Thriller” video as well as other planned actions.
Well, it seems as if things are moving forward very nicely as a statement was recently released to The Hollywood Reporter;
“The Estate of Michael Jackson, John Landis and George Folsey Jr. have reached an amicable settlement of the actions that were pending in the Los Angeles Superior Court relating to the legendary short motion picture Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ and the documentary The Making of Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller.’ The settlement terms are confidential.”
So with that, I’m sure many of you are wondering just what this has to do with us. Well, the guys over at B-D recently did some digging and spoke with John Landis regarding this recent outcome, and he said;
“The Estate of Michael Jackson has been dealing with all of Michael’s debts and legal obligations and our complaint has finally been addressed,” Landis stated. “So now all is good and there will be exciting things happening with Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” that I will be doing in collaboration with the Estate in the future.“
So with this, could it mean that we may see a proper ‘Thriller‘ release? Who knows, but it certainly seems as if the stage-play is now moving ahead and actually making headway.

"Thriller" è un video bellissimo e ne potrebbe nascere un musical o una rappresentazione teatrale più che un film vero e proprio, comunque la collaborazione con John Landis è sempre stata positiva e porterà ottimi frutti anche stavolta, qualsiasi prodotto nuovo dovesse nascere in collaborazione con l'Estate. L'Estate di MJ ha versato 55.000 dollari per pagare la ragazza di Thriller
55.000 dollari ... questo è quanto ha preso la ragazza per il video musicale "Thriller" di Michael Jackson , per proclamare una tregua nella sua battaglia con l'Estate di MJ .... TMZ ha scoperto la storia ... Ola Ray aveva trovato un accordo con La Tenuta di Mj all'inizio dello scorso anno, e ora sappiamo per quanto ... 55 mila dollari per Ola ... e 20.000 dollari per il suo avvocato. Ola inizialmente, aveva presentato causa contro MJ e la sua società di produzione, nel maggio 2009 - un mese prima della scomparsa di Jackson - sostenendo una violazione del contratto. Ola ha detto di dover ricevere ancora una bella fetta di profitti da "Thriller" ... rilasciato quasi 30 anni prima. TMZ broke the story ... Ola Ray settled her lawsuit with the estate earlier this year, and now we know what for ... $55,000 to Ola ... and $20,000 to her lawyer.
Ola originally filed the suit against MJ and his production company in May 2009 -- a month before Jackson passed away -- claiming breach of contract. Ola said she was still owed a massive chunk of the "Thriller" profits ... nearly 30 years after it was released.
The director of the music video John Landis -- who filed a similar lawsuit against the estate -- has also settled ... but he wanted in excess of $2 million, so we're guessing he got a little more than Ola.

Se non altro, anche se in ritardo, ha fatto causa prima del 25 giugno.... non come tanti altri che si sono "ricordati" di presentare richieste di risarcimenti vari (veri o fasulli che siano) solo molto tempo dopo!!

Ora spero che i miei file di archivio cerebrale mi aiutino.. ma mi sembra di ricordare un intervista(scritta) nella quale lei diceva di aver parlato a Michael per molto tempo di questo problema che non si risolveva (perdonate, ma non ricordo i dettagli) e che alla fine lo informò di non avere altra scelta che far causa alla società di produzione.Insomma, non era una sorpresa per lui ecco, e non è iniziato tutto dopo 30 anni, sembra che questa storia fosse in ballo da molto tempo.
Comunque, se la cifra è vera è una sciocchezza(intendo rispetto ai profitti di Thriller.. magari è solo un acconto però..chissà..
