.Be Afraid: The Consequences of Michael Jackson’s Level of Fameby Syl Mortilla
In the song, ‘Price of Fame’, Michael lets us know that his father had made him fully aware of the dangers inherent in the altitude of fame he was shooting for,
“Father always told me / You won’t live a quiet life / If you’re reaching for fortune and fame… / I feel their envious looks at me / Their mistaken jealousy…”
The risks were nevertheless confronted by Michael. As he sang in ‘Dirty Diana’,
“I’ll be the freak you can taunt /And I don’t care what you say / I want to go too far / I’ll be your everything / If you make me a star…”
Fan adulation, after all, was integral to Michael’s sense of identity.
The echelons of fame that the Thriller album vaulted Michael into contained two major drawbacks for him. Firstly, that he would forever be shackled with the impossible task of striving to improve upon the album’s unprecedented commercial achievements; and secondly, that becoming the most famous person alive meant that the bounty on his head suddenly became dangerously high. Especially after his being shrewd and audacious enough to invest his capital into the white man’s game of music publishing. A very young and uniquely influential black man suddenly became perceived by the establishment as one who was getting disconcertingly above his station.
These risks ultimately became manifest through the infamy that arrived with the child molestation allegations. With the tragic irony being Michael’s pursuit of fame being driven by a desire to spread his message of love as a healing force for the disadvantaged children of the world; whilst the architects of his fall from grace were motivated by money. The consequence of this tragedy was that the vacuum created by the potency of Michael’s drug of fame became inversely correlated with his self-defeating reliance on analgesics.
One desire of the 1993 extortionists was that Michael would “never sell another record.” In 1995, Michael toured the world performing in front of the largest crowds of his career, promoting the HIStory album, the biggest selling double album of all time.
As Michael exclaimed on ‘This Time Around’, the track from that album directed towards Evan Chandler, “Control this!”
Another song from the HIStory album, ‘2 Bad’, features the lyric, “Hell all up in Hollywood”. It’s featured in the short film ‘Ghosts’ as Michael the Maestro orchestrates a deft dance of the decrepit dead.
The monstrous success of the ‘Thriller’ short film means that this other macabre magnum opus has become overshadowed by its colossal cousin. Although the ‘Thriller’ choreography may well be iconic, in comparison with the sophistication of its kindred cinematic spirit, its artistic significance has the mere pallor of the dead. ‘Ghosts’ is not only a spectacular visual and sonic treat, it is also politically-charged and multi-layered in its themes. Part of the choreography evokes the image of a hanging man.
Michael conceived ‘Ghosts’ as a response to the 1993 child molestation allegations. In the film, Michael plays the roles of a spectre, a skeleton, a demon, an oppressive village mayor, and a demonically-possessed version of said mayor.
In ‘Thriller’, during Michael’s pursuit of unprecedented fame, he chose to metamorphose into that most iconic emblem of horror – a werewolf. In ‘Ghosts’, after suffering the consequences of the successful attainment of the fame he had craved, the monster he assumed the role of was one of an-altogether more real, and more sinister kind – an embodiment (and a substantial body at that) of the reactionary, radical capitalist mentality of Bible Belt (and a substantial belt at that) America.
The references in ‘Ghosts’ are obvious. There is little dialogue, but what there is leaves little room for interpretation. With one child asking Michael’s Maestro character to “Show ‘em the neat stuff you did for us!” before being chastised by another of the children with the words, “Shut up! That’s supposed to be a secret!” and Michael responding with, “Don’t you kids enjoy it when I, er… do my little… you know?”
The demonic incarnation of Michael possesses the Mayor. After the possessed dance, the Mayor then scatters the ghouls with a scream, and the Maestro then destroys himself by smashing himself on the floor. We see his face crumble into dust. Is this as an analogy for Michael’s self-sabotaging personal demons? If so, we quickly learn that these demons have been overcome, as the Maestro returns and the Mayor is terrified into a rapid departure through the nearest window, leaving his comical, cartoon-inspired shape in the smashed glass.
This was the only time Michael voluntarily appeared to be a white, Caucasian man. Specifically, as a characterisation of late District Attorney Tom Sneddon – the white man who had relentlessly hounded Michael out of an insatiable desire to unjustly trap Michael. Relentless efforts motivated by self-promotion.
As part of the second wave of allegations, made possible through Sneddon’s success in changing the law in order to pursue Michael, Neverland was stormed and ransacked. It was a strange, entirely fruitless act that involved hitherto unseen levels of scrutiny, undertaken by the ominous luminosity of metaphorical burning crosses; mob-rule insisting that the “freak circus freak” left the village. Michael had portentously referenced these events in the ‘Ghosts’ short film.
And the last thing organised racists would do after carrying out a lynching such as that alluded to in the ‘Beat It’ lyrics? Seize the property of the lynched.
The grand splash that was the extravagance of Michael’s art means the subtleties contained within it are often overlooked. The purpose of the magnitude was to garner global attention. But it’s these ingenious intricacies that will result in the grand splashes rippling on forever.
Michael, in his genius, utilised the extravagantly large, such as in the use of the HIStory statue, but also the nuances of the small. It is these that grant us the liberty of interpretation.
Michael’s canon of work – created out of a studied perfection due to his being self-aware at having established an immutable place as a cultural phenomenon – is there to be analysed. It’s both a treasure map and a treasure trove, with its bounty often only perceived with hindsight. It took twenty years for the intricacies contained within the spectacle of the Black or White video to start being dissected.
Seen in this light, it’s interesting to note such things as the ‘adlibbing’ at the end of the jaw-dropping, victorious 1995 MTV VMA come-back performance, “Though you’re far away MTV, I am here to stay” Was this a reminder to a company he had single-handledly revolutionised? Through having such an immense popularity that forced them to start playing black music? Had Michael feel slighted by MTV’s lack of support during the dark days of 1993/94?
And the moment in ‘Smooth Criminal’ in which Michael catches a cue ball, crushes it in his hand and then aggressively blows the white dust into a black man’s face?
Such minutiae become very interesting indeed.
Another piece of dialogue from ‘Ghosts’ is, “See what you’ve done? Aren’t you ashamed? Young people are impressionable.”
Michael understood that in order to fight bigotry and prejudice, he had to use his elevated position to capture the minds of children and turn them against the ingrained views of their parents. Which is why “Black Or White” begins with a boy standing up to his father.
And this was another factor that generated the inordinate rage directed towards Michael during the 1993 allegations: the feeling that he was undermining the security of the patriarchal system; that he was somehow “stealing” children away from their fathers. Evan Chandler, the father of the 1993 accuser, even admits in his book that he was jealous of his son wanting to spend more time with Michael than him. Evan Chandler was an estranged father insecure in his role, and felt threatened by the possibility of Michael replacing him.
Which is a natural reaction, albeit one borne of the more bestial elements of human nature – as all jealousy is. The more sinister and premeditated part of Evan Chandler’s scheme, however, was the ruthless extortion attempt in which he was content with the idea of annihilating an innocent man. In truth, Michael did indeed steal the children from the orthodox patriarchy, and provided a new, non-patriarchal model; one exemplified by his later becoming both father and mother to his three children. Michael’s reimagining of the family construct is often viewed as pathological, due to its non-conformity. As Michael said, “They don’t understand it so it makes them feel very uncomfortable”.
The traditional “loving family” does not need to be biological. As humanity is becoming more individualised, there is an evident increase in “tailored families” – tailored to maximise the potential for love.
Indeed, perhaps the greatest example in existence of a bespoke family is the Michael Jackson fan community itself. The single greatest thing that Michael’s fame achieved was this everlasting international following – one fortified by the pain of being paraded through unjust hellfire, a comradery united by such a unique love that can only be formed through such unique experience.
So, to those that might dare attack us – be afraid. Be very afraid.
To once again quote Michael the Maestro in ‘Ghosts’,
“Did I tell you I wasn’t I alone? Meet The Family…”

Con quei rischi comunque, Michael si è confrontato. Come cantava in 'Dirty Diana',
"Sarò il mostro da schernire / E non mi interessa quello che dici / Voglio andare molto lontano / io sarò il tuo tutto / Se mi rendi una star ..."
L'adulazione dei fan, dopo tutto, è stata parte integrante del senso di identità di Michael.
L'enorme fama raggiunta da Michael con Thriller , si è portata dietro a sua volta due grossi problemi. Primo, che sarebbe stato per sempre vincolato al tentativo di superare i successi commerciali di questo album; e secondo, il fatto di essere diventato la persona più famosa del pianeta e in vita ha fatto sì che la taglia sulla sua testa diventasse improvvisamente molto alta. Soprattutto dopo essere stato così scaltro e audace da investire il suo capitale in affari prettamente dei bianchi e sull'editoria musicale. Un giovanissimo ed unicamente influente uomo di colore è stato percepito come pericoloso.
Questi rischi si sono poi manifestati nell'infamia che è arrivata con le accuse di molestie su minori, con la tragica ironia legata al fatto che la sua immensa fama era guidata dal desiderio di diffondere il suo messaggio di amore e aiutare i bambini svantaggiati del mondo, mentre gli artefici della sua caduta in disgrazia erano motivati dal denaro. La conseguenza di questa tragedia è che il vuoto creato dalla potente fama di Michael divenne inversamente correlato con la sua auto-sconfitta, e la dipendenza da analgesici.
Ciò che gli estorsori volevano nel 1993 , era che Michael non riuscisse "più a vendere nemmeno un altro disco." Nel 1995, Michael girò il mondo esibendosi di fronte alla più grande folla della sua carriera, mentre era in tour per l'album HIStory, il doppio album più venduto di tutti i tempi.
Come Michael dice in 'This Time Around', il brano da quell'album dove si rivolge ad Evan Chandler, "Controlla questo!"
Un'altra canzone dall'album HIStory, '2 Bad', riporta nel testo la frase "Scoppia l'inferno a Hollywood". Un concetto descritto poi attraverso il cortometraggio' Ghosts 'dove Michael, il Maestro , orchestra un abile sequenza di danza con dei morti decrepiti .
Il mostruoso successo del cortometraggio di 'Thriller' ha fatto si che questo altro magnum opus macabro, venisse oscurato dal suo celebre cugino. Ma anche se la coreografia di 'Thriller' è assolutamente iconica, in confronto con la raffinatezza di Ghosts, il suo significato artistico ha il mero pallore dei morti. 'Ghosts' non è solo uno spettacolare piacere viviso e sonoro, ma è anche politicamente carico di molti temi. Parte della coreografia evoca l'immagine di un uomo preso di mira.
Michael concepì 'Ghosts' come risposta alle accuse di pedofilia del 1993 . Nel film, Michael interpreta i ruoli di uno spettro, uno scheletro, un demone, un sindaco opprimente di un villaggio, e una versione demoniaca posseduta dello stesso sindaco.
In 'Thriller', Michael, nella sua ricerca costante di una fama senza precedenti, scelse di trasformarsi nell'emblema più rappresentativo dell'orrore- un lupo mannaro. In 'Ghosts', dopo aver subito le conseguenze di quell'immensa fama che tanto aveva agognato, l'orrore assume un ruolo di maggior sinistro genere - una forma di realizzazione del reazionario contro la radicale mentalità capitalista della Bible Belt americana. ( n.d.r La Bible Belt (letteralmente cintura della Bibbia) è un'area culturale degli Stati Uniti in cui vive una grande percentuale di persone di religione strettamente Cristiana Protestante, per lo più evangeliche.- Wiki)
I riferimenti in "Ghosts 'sono evidenti. C'è poco dialogo, ma quello che c'è, lascia poco spazio all'interpretazione. Un bimbo che chiede al Maestro( il personaggio interpretato da Michael) "Mostra loro quello che di bello hai fatto per noi", Prima di essere castigato da un altro dei bambini con queste parole: «Taci! Dovrebbe essere un segreto! "E Michael che risponde con:" Non vi divertite quando io , ehm ... faccio quel piccolo ... lo sai? "
L'incarnazione demoniaca di Michael possiede il Sindaco. Dopo essere stato posseduto, il Sindaco si libera del demone con un urlo, e il Maestro subito dopo distrugge se stesso fracassandosi a terra. Vediamo il suo volto dissolversi in polvere. Un analogia di auto-distruzione contro i propri demoni? Se è così, impariamo presto che questi demoni non hanno vinto, e il Sindaco terrorizzato corre verso la finestra più vicina, lasciando la sua impronta corporea, di classica ispirazione dai fumetti, nel vetro fracassato.
Questa è stata l'unica volta che Michael apparve volontariamente nelle sembianze di un bianco,un uomo caucasico. In particolare, come caricatura del procuratore distrettuale Tom Sneddon - l'uomo bianco che aveva inesorabilmente braccato Michael e percorso da un insaziabile desiderio di intrappolarlo ingiustamente.
Durante la seconda ondata di accuse, resa possibile dagli sforzi Sneddon per modificare la legge, al fine di perseguire Michael, Neverland è stata presa d'assalto e saccheggiata. Uno strano gesto e del tutto inutile , che ricordava molto da vicino gli assalti del KKK con tanto di croci infuocate; la regola, nell'operazione di polizia era dimostrare che "il mostro, il mostro da circo" aveva lasciato il paese. E Michael aveva previsto questi eventi in 'Ghosts'.
Era l'ultima cosa che i razzisti organizzati avrebbero fatto dopo il linciaggio, forse, lo stesso concetto espresso nei testi di 'Beat it'? Derubare i possessi del linciato.
La grandezza della stravagante arte di Michael: le sottigliezze in essa contenute ma spesso trascurate. Lo scopo della grandezza era di raccogliere l'attenzione globale. Ma sono proprio queste ingegnose complessità che si traducono nella grandezza della sua arte per sempre.
Michael, nel suo genio, ha utilizzato spesso delle stravaganze, o definite tali, come ad esempio l'uso della statua di HIStory, ma anche con sfumature più sottili, concedendoci per altro la libertà di interpretazione.
Il lavoro minuzioso di Michael - creato da una perfezione studiata dovuta al suo essere consapevole di voler avere un posto indelebile in qualunque fenomeno culturale - è lì per essere studiato. E' sia la mappa del tesoro che il tesoro, con la sua generosità spesso percepita solo con il senno di poi. Ci sono voluti 20 anni per comprendere le complessità insite in Black or White, o perchè fosse analizzato.
Visto in questa luce, è interessante notare cose come le parole alla conclusione della performance stupefacente agli MTV VMA del 1995 “anche se sei lontana MTV, io sono qui per restare„ era forse questo il riferimento ad una società nata solo grazie agli sforzi di un rivoluzionario? Il successo di Michael fu tale che gli permise di poter trasmettere musica nera? Michael si era sentito offeso dalla mancanza di sostegno di MTV durante i giorni bui del 1993-1994?
O il momento in cui, in 'Smooth Criminal' ,spacca la stecca schiaccia la pallina e con rabbia soffia la polvere bianca sul viso di un uomo di colore?
Tali minuzie diventano molto interessanti.
Un altro pezzo di dialogo da 'Ghosts' è: "Vedi quello che hai fatto? Non ti vergogni? I giovani sono impressionabili. "
Michael aveva capito che per combattere il fanatismo e il pregiudizio, doveva catturare le menti dei bambini e far si che si trasformassero combattendo contro le opinioni radicate dei loro genitori. Quale è il motivo per cui "Black Or White" inizia con un ragazzo che sfida suo padre.
E questo è stato un altro fattore che ha generato così tanta rabbia diretta vero Michael durante le accuse del 1993: la sensazione che stava minando la sicurezza del sistema patriarcale; che stesse in qualche modo portando i bambini lontano dai loro padri. Evan Chandler, il padre dell'accusatore del 1993, ammise di essere geloso del fatto che suo figlio preferiva passare il suo tempo con Michael. Evan Chandler era un insicuro padre separato che si era sentito minacciato dalla possibilità che Michael potesse sostituirlo.
Che è una reazione naturale, anche se rappresenta uno degli elementi più bestiali dell'essere umano - o come la gelosia può farlo diventare. La parte più sinistra e premeditata, nel piano di Evan Chandler, però, è stato il tentativo di estorsione con la volontà di annientare un uomo innocente. In realtà, Michael ha davvero allontanato i bambini da un metodo ortodosso e patriarcale, e ha fornito loro un nuovo modello, non patriarcale; uno esempio anche nel suo diventare padre e madre per i suoi tre figli. Il modo in cui Michael ha rivisto il concetto di famiglia è spesso visto come patologico, a causa della sua non conformità. Come ha detto Michael, "Loro non capiscono che così li si fa sentire molto a disagio".
Il tradizionale concetto di "famiglia amorevole" non ha bisogno di essere biologico. Mentre l'umanità è sempre più individualista, aumentano le cosidette "famiglie su misura" - su misura per massimizzare il potenziale dell'amore.
Anzi, forse il più grande esempio di esistenza di una famiglia su misura è la comunità di fan Michael Jackson . Già anche questo è successo alle generazioni successive. Lo stesso tipo di " ignoranza" intesa come NON conoscenza.. basata sulle pappardelle della stampa, senza nemmeno chiedersi cosa c'era di così strano e sinistro e anomalo, fra ciò che dicevano e ciò che invece loro ..vedevano.
Un autore molto discusso italiano, Aldo Busi, diceva, ( è vivo eh.. ma l'ho letto molto tempo fa).

.Seeing Voices: A Week in the World of Michael Jacksondi Syl MortillaThis week has been a mixed bag for us Michael Jackson acolytes.
Firstly, as absurd as the idea of Wade Robson’s parasitic attempt at extortion certainly was, it is surely a welcome, deserved relief that we are not about to once again endure another intense defence of our hero against the misinformed.
Though it goes without saying that we shall always do so with honour, should we be called upon.
Of course, those of us that steadfastly stood by our hero during his decades of unwarranted trials and tribulations; those of us in possession of the facts behind the sensationalism, aghast and astounded at how such bare-faced mendacity can possibly be legal, have no requirement for further stratification of our belief in the purity of Michael’s heart and potency in his mission.
But we have been furnished with more munitions for our armoury.
There are several instances in Michael’s canon of work that suggest his being sensitive towards people who are deaf, with his incorporating sign language into both the MTV 10 performance of Will You Be There, and in the ‘prison version’ of the They Don’t Care About Us short film. (Perhaps less-intentionally, I also recall an episode of the BBC series See Hear in which a segment regarding deaf people who danced through interpreting musical vibrations, lauded Blood On The Dance Floor as being their peerless song of choice.)
I imagine this sensitivity that Michael had arose from his intrinsic relationship with music, and his contemplating what it must be like to live in a world devoid of it.
Today, we were treated to another example of this sensitivity – in the form of previously unseen footage of Ghosts rehearsals, with a minute-long snippet of the song Seeing Voices as its soundtrack (see below for the YouTube link). The instrumental version of Seeing Voices has been around for many years, with the track being one – along with others such as Buffalo Bill and Men In Black – that holds a mythical status due to its desire to be heard by the fan community.
Seeing Voices was inspired by Michael’s sensitivity towards people who are deaf. All those people that cannot hear him sing – at least, not until medical science finds a solution. There is a profound beauty in the notion that when such a day of miraculous scientific discovery arrives, people who are deaf will be able to hear Michael singing this glorious tribute to the majesty of gesture, with such astonishing vocal grace. Expressing emotion through movement was something Michael was uniquely au fait with due to his being an icon of dance and ocular representation. Indeed, the very metaphor of sign language being hands “weaving the space between friends” is a breathtakingly beautiful image in itself.
A visionary indeed.
Incidentally, let us not forget the other half of the treat we were granted with today.
Something that provides us with further insight – not only into the development of the Ghosts project, but also into Michael Jackson the man.
In the final edit of Ghosts, a particularly harrowing scene – with all its self-aware connotations – involves Michael the Maestro committing suicide by hammering his face against a checkered floor. It is visual tragi-poetry.
In the leaked footage, Michael is resurrected through the love that children have for him, with children – literally – rebuilding him out of the crumbled remains of his self-obliteration.
For whatever reason, this idea wasn’t used. Perhaps due to the fact that the theme of Michael being redeemed by the innocent perspectives of children is evident enough in the film, without the need for such graphic explanation.
For those with half a brain, at least.
The vicissitude of Michael’s life is reminiscent of the epic stories of Greek mythology. Indeed, having to both perpetually defend Michael against slander whilst simultaneously promoting his historical importance can at times seem a Sisyphean task.
The other news from this week is the confirmation that Neverland is to be put up for sale. An action brought by the Estate of Michael Jackson. An action contrary to the wishes of Michael’s children. It is a situation of desperate sadness. One that I feel allows me to indulge in referencing another Greek myth. It appears that some fans have drunk from Lethe – a river in Hades. The water from which caused amnesia.
It’s interesting to observe the amount of weight Michael lost between the time rehearsal footage from Ghosts that accompanies Seeing Voices was shot, and the time of actual recording the final edit. Michael’s long-suffering with his body image is well-documented. Michael replacing nutrition with a strict work-ethic, as part of his striving for perfection, an ethos that had been instilled in him since he was a child, was often a reason for his ultimately being unable to meet the demands of the project – One Night Only being a prime example.

Per prima cosa, per quanto potesse essere stato assurdo il tentativo di estorsione parassitario di Wade Robson , c'è sicuramente da essere contenti e sollevati di non essere in procinto di doversi accollare ancora una volta la fatica di difendere il nostro eroe contro i male informati.
Anche se è ovvio che qualora dovessimo essere chiamati a farlo, lo faremo sempre con onore.
Certo, quelli di noi che hanno seguito con fermezza e supporto gli anni del processo e delle tribolazioni del nostro eroe; quelli di noi in possesso dei fatti dietro il sensazionalismo,quelli di noi inorriditi e sgomenti da quanto una simile sfacciata menzogna possa diventare una questione legale, non hanno certo bisogno di altre dimostrazioni per credere nella purezza del suo cuore e nella potenza della sua missione.
Ma nel tempo, altrettante munizioni si sono unite al nostro arsenale.
Ci sono molte dimostrazioni nei normali canoni di lavoro di Michael che suggeriscono il suo essere sensibile verso le persone sorde,ad esempio nell'incorporare il linguaggio dei segni per sordi nella performance agli MTV di Will You Be There, o nella 'versione dal carcere' del cortometraggio They Don't car about us. (Forse, se pur per lui meno intenzionalmente, mi ricordo di un episodio della BBC di See Hear nel quale un gruppo di persone sorde che ballavano interpretando le vibrazioni musicali, indicarono Blood On The Dance Floor come la canzone per loro migliore in assoluto.)
Immagino che questa sensibilità che Michael possedeva, sia sorta dal suo rapporto intrinseco con la musica, e probabilmente dal contemplare come deve essere vivere in un mondo privo di musica.
Oggi, possiamo vedere anche un altro esempio di questa sensibilità - sotto forma di immagini inedite dalle prove di Ghosts, con un lungo frammento di Seeing Voices (vedi sotto per i link di YouTube). La versione strumentale di Seeing Voices è in giro da molti anni, nel mentre la traccia completa - insieme ad altre, come Buffalo Bill e Men In Black - è quasi mitologizzata per quanto è forte il desiderio della comunità di ascoltare la canzone completa.
Seeing Voices , venne ispirata dalla sensibilità di Michael nei confronti delle persone sorde. Tutte quelle persone che non possono sentirlo cantare - almeno, non fino a quando la scienza medica troverà una soluzione. C'è una profonda bellezza nel solo pensare,che un giorno la scoperta scientifica riuscirà a far si che le persone sorde, possano essere in grado di ascoltare Michael che canta in questo glorioso tributo alla maestà del gesto/simbolo, con un immensa grazia vocale stupefacente. Esprimere le emozioni attraverso il movimento è un qualcosa di proprio a Michael , un icona con il suo essere tutt'uno con la danza e la rappresentazione visiva.Effettivamente, la metafora stessa del linguaggio dei segni che fa da tramite e connessione fra persone diverse è un'immagine strabiliantemente bella in sé.
Un visionario... davvero.
Per inciso, non dimentichiamo l'altra metà della festa che ci è stata concessa oggi.
Un qualcosa che ci da ulteriori indicazioni - non solo nello sviluppo del progetto Ghosts, ma anche dell'uomo Michael.
Nel montaggio finale di Ghosts, una scena particolarmente straziante - con tutte le sue connotazioni dell'essere autoconsapevole - un coinvolgente Michael, il maestro, si suicida fracassandosi il volto contro il pavimenti a scacchi. E' una visual-tragi poesia.
Nel filmato trapelato, Michael risorge attraverso l'amore che i bambini hanno per lui, e questo- letteralmente - ricostruisce i resti della sua auto-obliterazione.
Per una qualche ragione, questa idea poi non venne utilizzata. Forse a causa del fatto che il tema generale inserito nel video è l'essere riscattato dalle prospettive innocenti dei bambini , il che è sufficientemente evidente in tutto il cortometraggio, senza la necessità di un ulteriore immagine grafica.
Per quelli con un minimo di cervello, almeno.
La vicenda di vita di Michael ricorda le storie epiche della mitologia greca. Infatti, il dover difendere Michael dalle calunnie e allo stesso tempo promuovere la sua importanza storica a volte può sembrare una fatica di Sisifo
L'altra novità di questa settimana è la conferma che Neverland è stata messa in vendita. Un ricorso proposto dalla Tenuta di Michael Jackson. Un'azione contro la volontà dei figli di Michael. E questo ci crea una profonda tristezza,per la quale mi permetto di indulgere in un altro mito greco. Sembra che alcuni fan abbiano bevuto dal Lethe - uno dei fiumi di Hades. L'acqua capace di creare l'oblio e amnesia.
E 'interessante osservare la perdita di peso di Michael fra il making di Ghosts accompagnato da Seeing Voices , e la registrazione finale del cortometraggio. La soggettazione del suo corpo alle esigenze lavorative è ben documentata. Michael spesso e tuttavia, sostituiva la necessità di alimentarsi con la rigorosa etica del lavoro, come parte del suo impegno per la perfezione, una regola di vita, istillata in lui sin da quando era un bambino, ma che spesso era la ragione per la quale finiva per non essere in grado poi di portare a termine le necessità del progetto - One Night Only ne fu un classico esempio.
Con lo spudoratamente-lascivo This Is It che ne rappresenta l'azzardo conclusivo.

.Fanboys of the Estate. Fans of Michael Jackson: An Article on the Distinctionby Syl Mortilla
People from over one hundred and fifty countries read my blog, a fact that I find as surprising as the next person; a fact that somehow manages to be humbling, terrifying and encouraging all at the same time.
As a result of this, I’m lucky enough to have made friends from all over the world who share my perception of our hero Michael Jackson – the man we have so much to thank for, not least in how his peerless genius created this gargantuan network of likeminded people.
This friendship group contains some of the most intelligent and kind people I have ever encountered. People who – in an effort to spread Michael’s message to as many people as possible – have incredibly-generously volunteered to translate my book The First Book of Michael into various languages, the first of which will be available this coming week.
Speaking of the book, my good friends at the The MJCast recently asked me if I’d be attending the Kingvention that’s happening in London, and if I’d be selling my book there.
I jokingly responded that I might, but only if I could get hold of a bullet-proof vest to wear beneath my The First Book of Michael T-shirt.
Seriously, though. I probably will attend. If only to report back on how Michael Jackson Estate fanboys and fangirls – as opposed to Michael Jackson fans – imagine an Estate of Michael Jackson Convention should manifest.
The distinction between fanboy and fan is a stark one. Fanboys being more than willing to adopt a position of self-denial in order to enable their acceptance of subpar shiny things from the Estate, in a compensatory effort to boost their memorabilia collections and their credentials.
Yes, I realise that’s harsh. And not entirely accurate. Fanboy is part of the journey. After all, I remember 1997. I remember being a naïve 17 year old unaware of an opiate called Demerol. I remember initially wondering why in the song ‘Morphine’ Michael was plaintively, if incongruously, singing the name of his then-wife.
Still. At least during my initiation, I knew the money I was spending on memorabilia was going to help Michael’s mission, rather than lining the pockets of the corrupt.
Generally, anyway. I’ll never forget the extortionately priced VHS of Dangerous Tour in Milan I received in the post, in which this was the best shot of Michael:
An event I’m actually extremely excited about is The Jacksons headlining the BBC Proms in Hyde Park in September. To hear those Can You Feel It horns being performed by a live orchestra is going to be rather special. Even imagining it makes my spine tingle. It will be soulful. It will be quality.
I might even wear a The First Book of Michael T-shirt to that, too.
So. Anyone know where I can get a bullet-proof vest? You know – like the one Michael wore when he protested against Sony?

.Fanboys dell'Estate. I fans di Michael Jackson: Un articolo sulle differenzedi Syl Mortilla
Persone provenienti da oltre 150 paesi leggono il mio blog, un fatto che trovo sorprendente quanto chiunque stia leggendo questo; un fatto che in qualche modo riesce ad essere, allo stesso modo umiliante, terrificante, ma anche incoraggiante.
Come conseguenza di questo, so di avere amici provenienti da tutto il Mondo che condividono la mia percezione sul nostro eroe :Michael Jackson - l'uomo che abbiamo tanto di cui ringraziare, anche nel modo in cui il suo genio senza pari, è stato capace di creare questo pantagruelico insieme di persone.
Questo gruppo di amici contiene alcune delle persone più intelligenti e gentili che abbia mai incontrato. Persone che - nel tentativo di diffondere il messaggio di Michael ai più possibile - si sono incredibilmente e generosamente offerti di tradurre il mio libro The First Book of Michael,in varie lingue, la prima delle quali sarà già disponibile la prossima settimana ( n.d.r era la versione Italiana, che infatti è stata pubblicata).
Parlando del libro, i miei buoni amici di The MJCast mi hanno recentemente chiesto, se mi farebbe piacere essere presente alla Kingvention che si sta organizzando a Londra, e nella quale potrei promuovere il mio Libro.
Scherzosamente ho risposto che potrei essere interessato, ma solo indossando sotto la maglietta con l'Immagine frontale della cover di The First Book of Michael, un giubbotto antiproiettile.
Scherzi a parte, probabilmente parteciperò. Se non altro per riferire su come i fanboys e le fangirls della Michael Jackson's Estate - al contrario dei fan di Michael Jackson - potrebbero immaginare le differenze del come e invece dovrebbe essere una Convention della Michael Jackson's Estate.
La differenza fra Fanboys e fans è molto forte. I fanboys sono più che disposti ad adottare una posizione di abnegazione per accettare tutto quanto di luccicoso proviene dall'Estate, in uno sforzo di compensazione indubbiamente in grado di migliorare la collezioni di cimeli e le loro credenziali.
Sì, mi rendo conto che è dura. E non è del tutto esatto. I fanboys sono parte del cammino. Dopo tutto, mi ricordo di come ero nel 1997. Mi ricordo di essere stato un ingenuo 17enne , a conoscenza di un oppiaceo di nome Demerol. Ma ricordo che inizialmente mi chiedevo perchè nella canzone 'Morphine' Michael avesse questo tono lamentoso,e se incongruamente, non stesse cantando il nome della sua allora moglie.
E ancora, nel durante della mia iniziazione, pensavo che i ricavati dai cimeli, servissero ad aiutare la missione di Michael, piuttosto che riempire le tasche dei corrotti.
In linea di massima, comunque, non dimenticherò mai la proposta ( quasi estorsiva)di acquisto ricevuta per posta elettronica del VHS della tappa del Dangerous Tour di Milano, la cui immagine migliore di tutto il video è questa :
Un evento del quale invece sono entusiasta è il The Jacksons headliner BBC Proms a Hyde Park nel mese di settembre. La possibilità di poter ascoltare Can You Feel It eseguita da un orchestra dal vivo, non potrà che essere speciale, e anche se immagino la malinconia e i brividi lungo la schiena. Sarà pieno di sentimento. Sarà di qualità.
Potrei anche indossare la mia maglietta con la cover di The First Book of Michael, anche per questa occasione.

.The Challenge: An Article on the Abuse of Nostalgia by the Michael Jackson Estateby Syl MortillaFor a bit of fun, to try and alleviate all the heaviness, I recently took part in MJ101’s Top 20 challenge.
At first, I thought it was a case of discerning my favourite twenty solo Michael Jackson songs – a nigh on impossible feat in itself – but was then informed I could select from any songs in the entirety of Michael’s career.
Cue the nostalgia.
And analysis.
Nostalgia is big business. Just ask the Estate.
The idea of the prolonging of youth is apparent to anyone with any inkling as to who the man-boy Michael Jackson was.
The children of Michael’s hey-day were the first generation for whom graduating from school didn’t mean an automatic expectation of their maturity. Not being required to grow up in the way their parents did allowed a continuation of their childhood.
Indeed, I’m a prime example of the twenty-first century phenomenon that is someone who channels their childhood passions into adulthood life.
This predilection of people to protract the pleasures of their adolescence has been cannily seized upon by corporations, with it being a lucrative wellspring of capitalist potential. Market-forces reassure us that burying our heads in our sandpits is a perfectly moral choice to make.
This infantilisation of society, in which people are encouraged to continue indulging in their childhood escapism is not only highly profitable for those pulling the strings, but also has the bonus of distracting people from the issues that are important. And Michael’s fans are particularly susceptible to this being taken advantage of by cynics. With the irony being that the intent of Michael’s art was to awaken people to said important issues.
Michael had the financial freedom to revisit the “lost and found” of his childhood on an unprecedented scale: an eccentricity that was seized upon by a sceptical society and used to try and destroy him. Yet, most people infantilise themselves to a certain extent – and in the same way Michael noted the hypocrisy of the universal acceptance of Caucasian attempts to change their skin colour to fit in with societal aspirations, it should be noted how this infantilisation of adults is also done on a mass daily basis for similar reasons.
Clothes departments of supermarkets, for example, are stocked to the brim with adult nightwear adorned with images of Disney characters, bought by adults attempting to temporarily export themselves back to a time and place where they possessed that precious childhood privilege of effortless access to a kingdom of imagination within which they could find refuge. The commodification and sexualisation of nostalgia is the cynical prostitution of a beautiful striving borne of the fundamental innocence of humanity.
Anything motivated purely by an attempt to maximise profit margins will instinctively compromise artistic integrity in order to appeal to as wide a market as possible, so that T-shirts and calendars can be sold. The Estate’s sanitisation of Michael is an epitomic demonstration of such corporate practises.
Michael fell victim to his naivety of the perception of his philosophies by the outside world. Michael indicated jealousy as a premium motivational reason for acts of ‘evil’. Jealous people – people unable to comprehend that sometimes the view of the mountain itself is more beautiful than the view from its summit. Indeed, one may very well argue that the very existence of the mass misunderstanding of Michael’s ideology, is due to a deep-seated envy of his precious capacity for being able to see through the eyes of a child; and of his capability to harness this gift for his art and success.
It is such unique insights into the human condition that exist within Michael’s work which are dismissed by the Estate at the expense of profitability; the impermanence of pop.
We have to demand quality out of respect for Michael’s memory and the lifetime he dedicated to leaving a legacy of humanitarianism. The things that make Michael precious to us, are quite evidently not the primary concern of the Estate. We cannot allow our passion for Michael to be weathered by greed-driven paltriness; nor can we afford to be distracted from the opportunity for peace that Michael’s legacy provides humanity with.
Take the MJ101 challenge. It’s both excruciating and fun. Though anyone including anything posthumous can get their coats now.
Yeah.
Definitely alleviated the heaviness.

La sfida: un articolo sull'abuso della nostalgia da parte dell'Estate di Michael Jackson
Per un avere po' di divertimento e cercare di alleggerire tutta la pesantezza, ho partecipato di recente alla sfida MJ101's Top 20.
In un primo momento, ho pensato che si trattava di scegliere le mie venti canzoni preferite di Michael Jackson da solista - un'impresa pressoché impossibile di per sé - ma poi sono stato informato che potevo scegliere tra tutti i brani della totalità della carriera di Michael.
Parte la nostalgia.
E l'analisi.
La nostalgia è un grande business. Basta chiedere alla Estate.
L'idea di un prolungamento della gioventù è evidente per chiunque abbia un qualche sentore di chi è stato l'uomo-ragazzo Michael Jackson.
I figli dei tempi di Michael sono stati la prima generazione per la quale il diploma di scuola non significava un'automatica aspettativa circa la loro maturità. Non essendo necessario crescere come lo era stato per i loro genitori hanno proseguito nella continuazione della loro infanzia.
A dirla tutta, io sono un ottimo esempio del fenomeno del ventunesimo secolo per cui qualcuno incanala le proprie passioni infantili nella vita adulta.
Questa predilezione delle persone a prolungare il piacere della loro adolescenza è stato astutamente colto al volo da parte delle aziende, essendo una fonte redditizia per il potenziale capitalista. Le forze di mercato ci rassicurano sul fatto che nascondere le nostre teste sotto la sabbia è una scelta perfettamente morale da fare.
Questa infantilizzazione della società, in cui le persone sono incoraggiate a continuare ad indulgere nella loro fuga nell'infanzia non solo è molto redditizia per chi tira le fila, ma ha anche il vantaggio di distrarre le persone dalle questioni che sono importanti. E i fan di Michael sono particolarmente sensibili a questo essere sfruttati dai cinici. E l'ironia è che lo scopo dell'arte di Michael era quello di risvegliare la gente e parlare di questioni importanti.
Michael aveva la libertà finanziaria di ripercorrere la sua infanzia da "chi l'ha vista?" su una scala senza precedenti: una eccentricità che è stata colta al volo da una società scettica e usata per cercare di distruggerlo. Eppure, la maggior parte delle persone in una certa misura torna piccola - e nello stesso modo in cui Michael aveva osservato l'ipocrisia dell'accettazione universale dei tentativi Caucasici di cambiare il loro colore della pelle per adattarsi alle aspirazioni della società, si deve rilevare come anche questa infantilizzazione degli adulti è fatta quotidianamente su vasta scala per ragioni simili.
I reparti di abbigliamento dei supermercati, per esempio, vengono stoccati fino all'orlo con pigiami da adulto decorati con immagini di personaggi Disney, acquistati da adulti che cercano temporaneamente di esportare se stessi di nuovo ad un tempo e un luogo dove detenevano quel privilegio prezioso dell'infanzia di un facile accesso ad un regno di immaginazione in cui potevano trovare rifugio. La mercificazione e sessualizzazione della nostalgia è la prostituzione cinica di una bella lotta a carico della fondamentale innocenza dell'umanità.
Tutto ciò puramente motivato da un tentativo di massimizzare i margini di profitto comprometterà istintivamente l'integrità artistica al fine di far leva sul più ampio mercato possibile, in modo tale che magliette e calendari possano essere venduti. La sanificazione di Michael da parte della Estate è una dimostrazione epitomica di tali pratiche aziendali.
Michael è stato vittima della sua ingenuità nella percezione della sua filosofia da parte del mondo esterno. Michael ha indicato la gelosia come ragione motivazionale principale per le azioni del 'male'. Persone gelose - persone non in grado di capire che a volte la vista della montagna stessa è più bella della vista dalla sua sommità. In effetti, si può benissimo sostenere che l'esistenza stessa del malinteso di massa circa l'ideologia di Michael, sia dovuto ad un'invidia profonda della sua preziosa capacità di essere in grado di vedere attraverso gli occhi di un bambino; e della sua capacità di sfruttare questo dono per la sua arte e il successo.
È questa così unica comprensione della condizione umana che è presente all'interno del lavoro di Michael, che è respinta dalla Estate a scapito della redditività; la provvisorietà del pop.
Dobbiamo esigere qualità per rispetto alla memoria di Michael e alla vita che ha dedicato per lasciare un'eredità di umanitarismo. Le cose che rendono Michael prezioso per noi, non sono con ogni evidenza la preoccupazione principale della Estate. Non possiamo permettere che la nostra passione per Michael sia alterata da meschinità guidata da avidità; né possiamo permetterci di essere distratti dall'opportunità di pace che l'eredità di Michael fornisce all'umanità.
Accettate la sfida MJ101. E' sia straziante che divertente. Ma chiunque includa una qualsiasi cosa postuma può prendere ora il proprio cappotto.
Già.
Di sicuro ha attenuato la pesantezza.

Io temo che questo aspetto della questione non sia " percepito" dalla massa.
Syl fa e giustamente una distinzione.. fra chi è cresciuto con Michael e chi no. Ma di certo non la fa per creare un ulteriore scissione, ne per ergersi a privilegiato.. ma per esprimere quel sentimento di dolore.. di disagio.. di svilimento e dispiacere che ci corrode dentro.. e che quando finisce per coinvolgere la sua arte pure.. è come il principio della fine.
Alcuni, forse.. nonostante siano più recenti nell'amare e onorare Michael, possono averlo avvertito anche.. ma senza sapergli dare una valenza.. o subito pronti a scacciare l'idea in se.
Eppure è così.. e ne parlavamo su FB.. dove e per fortuna c'è ancora chi a voglia di confrontarsi su questi temi, che trova tempo spazio e voglia di parlare di lui di capire di far qualcosa anche solo sfogandosi.
E parlavamo del sentore di un tentativo da parte del merchandising pilotato da SONY/ESTATE di CANCELLARE IL VERO MICHAEL, sostituendolo con un prodotto dal valore morale ed artistico inferiore.. più banale.. certamente.. con molto meno valore spirituale e umanitario.
Ecco, è questa la risposta infatti.. quella che forse cercavo da tempo..
Perchè tutti i prodotti post mortem non includono vere Immagini di Michael?
Cercavo la risposta in meandri di cavilli legali.. che mi sono più consoni.. ma forse non è li la risposta... è più palese.
CANCELLARLO per renderlo simile al fenomeno passeggero del momento.. Un due al prezzo di uno da supermercato.
O meglio cancellare quell'aurea di perfezione e assolutezza.. quel suo essere speciale in mille modi e altrettanto unico.. CANCELLARE il SUO AUTENTICO MESSAGGIO.
Quello che definivo " svilimento della sua eccellenza" è proprio questo.. un fantoccio di Ologramma che lo interpreta, musica rimaneggiata da perfetti estranei che nemmeno gli legano le scarpe... sagome di qualcun'altro.. uno spettacolo Circense.. disegni.. ma non immagini.. Un pupazzetto ...della Disney.. -
