Michael Jackson's Unfinished Dream

My mention of Michael Jackson on my Facebook status startled many, especially as I invited them to pray for him. Within minutes dozens of friends were commenting on my status, most of them were fans. More personal messages were dropped in my mailbox or emailed directly, and these were messages from my annoyed friends: "What have you got to do with Michael Jackson, a child molester, blah, blah, blah?"
This is a very big question, a huge question, since it can be rephrased in innumerable ways. What have I got to do with you? What have I got to do with the publisher of this paper? What have I got to do with President Obama?
Or, what have I, or you, got to do with this world? Perhaps the best answer is: "Because I live in this world." This is the point. The fact that you and I live in this world connects us to all other citizens in the world.
I remember the great Sufi mystic poet Saadi: "Human beings are members of a whole, In creation of one essence and soul. If one member is afflicted with pain, other members uneasy will remain. If you have no sympathy for human pain, The name of human you cannot retain."
But human pain and suffering cannot connect me with my fellow human beings, if I do not have some kind of "feelings" for them. I have an emotional tie with my family members, so I can easily feel their pain. But, I may not have such a tie with you, and therefore I may not feel the same way about you, your pain and your suffering.
Not so with Michael Jackson, he could feel the pain of a suffering humanity. He raised and donated millions of dollars for humanitarian causes. He was not compelled to do what he did. Indeed, there are people much richer than him that did not do anything to alleviate suffering.
Michael Jackson differs from them because of his "feelings". We can still hear the echo of his compassion through his songs and writings, such as this passage from his album "Dangerous":
"Consciousness expresses itself through creation. This world we live in is the dance of the creator. Dancers come and go in the twinkling of an eye but the dance lives on.
"On many an occasion, when I am dancing, I have felt touched by something sacred. In those moments, I felt my spirit soar and become one with everything that exists.
"I become the stars and the moon. I become the lover and the beloved. I become the victor and the vanquished. I become the master and the slave. I become the singer and the song. I become the knower and the known.
"I keep on dancing and then, it is the eternal dance of creation. The creator and the creation merge into one wholeness of joy. I keep on dancing...until there is only...the dance."
Such feelings are indeed very "dangerous", for then you can no longer shut your eyes to what is happening around you. Michael was in a very vulnerable condition, even before penning such thoughts, he was already singing: "We are the world...the world must come together as one.. It's time to lend a hand to life."
He felt connected with the world not just physically, but also spiritually. He did not stop at recognizing and acknowledging the pain and suffering of people; he wanted to make a change.
In "Man in the Mirror", he actually saw the reflection of his soul and sang with an added fervor: "If you want to make the world a better place, take a look at yourself, and then make a change." It was an advice given not to you or to me, but to himself: "I'm gonna make a change, for once in my life it's gonna feel real good, gonna make a difference, gonna make it right..."
His realization that he had "been a victim of a selfish kind of love" made him all the more obsessed with the idea of spreading the right kind of love to heal himself and "Heal the World" to "make it a better place for you and for me". He dreamt of a world where "Black or White" either did not matter at all, or mattered equally.
In "The Earth Song" he wept together with Mother Earth: "What have we done to the world, look what we've done." Frustrated with all the happenings around him, he continued: "I used to dream, I used to glance beyond the stars; now I don't know where we are, although I know we've drifted far."
Back in the late 1970s, I had the rare chance of meeting philosopher J. Krishnamurti (1895-1986). He suffered from a similar frustration too. Later, in a documentary made on his life, those who were close to him during his last days discussed his frustration.
Both, philosopher J. Krishnamurti and artist Michael Jackson spoke of change, of the ultimate freedom from bondage, from the old-rotten old paradigms. And, as rightly put by Mahatma Gandhi, both realized the necessity of "being the change" that they wanted to see in the world. Yet, both of them died frustrated, as did the Mahatma. Gandhi who could not accept the idea of India's division based on religion.
J. Krishnamurti let out his frustrations through his writings and discussions with people around him. Gandhi let out his frustrations by withdrawing from political life and going back to his commune in Gujarat. Michael Jackson, the star, let out his frustrations by experimenting with his body. He turned his body into a laboratory.
From a strict diet to several plastic surgery operations and his involvement in unpopular "ventures", his love and sex lives - can all be seen as manifestations of his innermost desire to change. Change was both, his dream and his obsession. When he "felt" that he failed to bring about change, or at least it was not the kind of change he desired, he withdrew and shut himself away from the outer world. This was a grave mistake. By doing so, he closed all the outlets to let go of his frustrations. And, he died a lonely man.
Yet, a man, a star like Michael Jackson is too big to die. Indeed, he is too bright a star to fall. He shall shine for many, many years. His legacy of songs, his unfulfilled dream of the world to come, and his obsession to change shall be remembered by generations to come. Michael's dream shall remain alive, for his dream is not a loner's dream, his dream is the dream of all those who are capable of dreaming something big.
Jackson, we share your frustration and we will turn this into a source of energy to realize your dream, to "make a better world for you and for me". I shall not bid you good-bye my friend, for in your dream our meeting continues..

''Il mio ricordo a Michael Jackson sullo stato del mio profilo Facebook ha sorpreso molti, soprattutto perchè li ho invitati a pregare per lui. Nel giro di pochi minuti decine di amici sono venuti a commentare il mio stato, la maggior parte di loro erano fans. I messaggi più personali li hanno lasciati nella mia casella di posta o inviati direttamente via mail, e questi sono stati i messaggi dei miei amici infastiditi: " Che cosa hai a che vedere con Michael Jackson, un molestatore di bambini, blah, blah, blah?
Questa è una grande domanda, una gigantesca domanda, dal momento che può essere espressa in tanti modi. Cosa ho a che vedere con te? Cosa ho a che vedere con l'editore di questo articolo? Cosa ho a che vedere con il Presidente Obama?
Oppure, cosa ho, o voi avete a che vedere con questo mondo? Forse la risposta migliore è: " Perchè vivo in questo mondo". Questo è il punto.
Il fatto che tu ed io viviamo in questo mondo ci collega a tutti gli altri cittadini del mondo.
Ricordo il grande poeta mistico Saadi Sufi: " Gli esseri umani fanno parte di un insieme, nella creazione di un'essenza e anima.Se un membro è afflitto dal dolore, gli altri membri resteranno in apprensione. Se non avete pietà per il dolore umano, il termine umano non può essere ammesso.
Ma il dolore e la sofferenza umana non può ricondurmi ai miei propri simili se non ho un qualche tipo di "sentimento" per loro. Ho un legame affettivo con i miei familiari, perciò posso facilmente sentire il loro dolore. Ma, io non ho un legame con voi, e quindi, non posso sentire la stessa cosa per voi, il vostro dolore e la vostra sofferenza.
Non è cosi per Michael Jackson, lui riusciva a sentire il dolore dell'umanità che soffre. Lui si è sollevato e ha donato milioni di dollari per cause umanitarie. Non era costretto a fare quello che ha fatto. Infatti, ci sono persone molto più ricche di lui che non hanno fatto nulla per alleviare le sofferenze.
Michael Jackson si differenzia da loro grazie ai suoi "sentimenti". possiamo ancora sentire l'eco della sua compassione attraverso le sue canzoni e i suoi scritti, come questo passaggio dal suo album " Dangerous".
" La coscienza si esprime attraverso la creazione. Questo mondo in cui viviamo è la danza del Creatore. I ballerini vanno e vengono in un battito di ciglia, ma la danza è eterna".
"In molte occasioni, quando danzo, mi sento toccato da qualcosa di sacro. In quei momenti, sento il mio spirito librarsi e diventa un tutt'uno con tutto ciò che esiste".
" Divento le stelle e la luna. Divento l'amante e l'amato. Divento il vincitore e il vinto. Divento il padrone e lo schiavo. Divento il cantante e la canzone. Divento il conoscitore e il conosciuto".
" Io continuo a ballare e poi, è l'eterna danza del creato.Il creatore e la creazione si fondono in una completa gioia. Io continuo a ballare.....fino a quando esiste solo......la danza".
Questi sentimenti sono infatti molto " pericolosi", perchè poi non è più possibile chiudere gli occhi su ciò che accade intorno a voi. Michael era in una condizione molto vulnerabile, ancor prima di aver scritto questi pensieri, lui stava già cantando " We Are The World"........il mondo deve unirsi come una cosa sola. E' tempo di dare una mano alla vita.
Si sentiva connesso con il mondo, non solo fisicamente, ma anche spiritualmente. Lui non smise di riconoscere ed affermare il dolore e la sofferenza delle persone; voleva fare un cambiamento.
In " Man In The Mirror ", vedeva il vero riflesso della sua anima, e cantando con fervore aggiunse: " Se vuoi rendere il mondo un posto migliore, guarda te stesso, e poi fai un cambiamento. E' stato un consiglio dato non a te o a me, ma a sè stesso; " Sto per fare un cambiamento, per una volta nella mia vita, farà sentire davvero bene, farà la differenza, farà la cosa giusta".......
La sua constatazione che era " stato vittima di un tipo di amore egoistico", lo rese ancora più ossessionato con l''idea di diffondere il giusto tipo di amore per guarire sè stesso, e " Guarire il mondo", per " renderlo un posto migliore per te e me". Sognava un mondo nel quale uno sia " Bianco o Nero", non importava affatto, o importava allo stesso modo.
In " Earth Song", ha pianto insieme alla Madre Terra: " Cosa abbiamo fatto al mondo, guarda cosa abbiamo fatto". Frustrato da tutti gli avvenimenti che lo circondavano, lui proseguì: " Sono abituato a sognare, sono abituato a sbirciare al di là delle stelle; adesso non so dove siamo, anche se so che siamo alla deriva".
Alla fine del 1970, ebbi la rara opportunità di incontrare il filosofo J. Krishnamurti (1895-1986). Soffriva anche lui di una simile frustrazione, in seguito, in una sua biografia, quelli che erano stati vicino a lui durante i suoi ultimi giorni discussero della sua frustrazione.
Entrambi, il filosofo J. Krishnamurti e l'artista Michael Jackson, parlavano del cambiamento, dell'assoluta libertà dalla schiavitù, dall'antico marcio vecchio paradigma. E, come giustamente apportato da Mahatma Gandhi, entrambi hanno capito la necessità di " essere il cambiamento" che loro volevano vedere nel mondo. Eppure, entrambi sono morti nella frustrazione, come è stato per Mahatma Gandhi, che non poteva accettare l'idea della divisione in India per via della religione.
Ancora, un uomo, una Star come Michael Jackson è troppo grande per morire.
Anzi, è una stella troppo luminosa per cadere.
Lui brillerà per molti, molti anni. L'eredità delle sue canzoni, il suo sogno irrealizzato sul mondo futuro, e la sua ossessione di cambiamento, sarà ricordato dalle generazioni future. Il sogno di Michael deve restare vivo, perchè il suo sogno non è un sogno isolato, il suo sogno è il sogno di tutti coloro che sono capaci di sognare qualcosa di grande.
Jackson, noi condividiamo la tua frustrazione, e trasformeremo questo in una fonte di energia per realizzare il tuo sogno, per " Creare un mondo migliore per te e per me". Non ti dico addio amico mio, nel tuo sogno il nostro incontro continua.''

CITAZIONELui brillerà per molti, molti anni. L'eredità delle sue canzoni, il suo sogno irrealizzato sul mondo futuro, e la sua ossessione di cambiamento, sarà ricordato dalle generazioni future. Il sogno di Michael deve restare vivo, perchè il suo sogno non è un sogno isolato, il suo sogno è il sogno di tutti coloro che sono capaci di sognare qualcosa di grande.
Questo passaggio mi ha colpito in modo particolare.
La sua stella è troppo grande e luminosa e non si offuscherà a causa dei pettegolezzi di persone prive di moralità o da azioni discutibili di chi dovrebbe custodire un lascito che mai potrà essere quantificato. Chi ha scritto l'articolo ha detto bene; il sogno di Michael non deve rimanere circoscritto alla sua persona, il suo sogno è il sogno di tutti coloro che sono capaci di sognare qualcosa di grande. Non sottovalutiamo la forza e il potere della volontà che ciascuno di noi ha..
