Gloria Haydock
On November 8, 2005, Gloria Haydock (President of now defunct fanclub, MJNI) receives a rare phonecall from Michael Jackson, and this is what she posts regarding the experience on her site:
“[…] I received a phonecall that day, seemingly out of the blue, from Michael. […] From a selection of messages I’ve seen on the MJNI.COM message board, some fans don’t understand why Michael would ring me. […]. As the trial approached, we wanted to launch a campaign that would enable fans from around the world to show their support for Michael. So, on 13th November 2004, the MJNI team launched the MJNI.COM Support Michael pages. […]
Our goal was to achieve at least 10,000 pledges by the end of the trial, a target which - together with the support of dozens of fan clubs from many countries around the globe - we easily achieved. […]
Back in 2002, when Michael needed a platform to speak to the fans, he accepted our invitation to visit the UK and we organised our Killer Thriller party and a march through London, resulting in a 2,000-strong show of fan support!
Who can forget Michael’s fifteen minute speech at Killer Thriller? It was monumental! […] During his recent visit to London, Michael received a letter from me explaining our campaign during the trial, and it was on reading this that he called to express his thanks and gratitude to us, the fans, in his words, for our “support, love and loyalty.” […]] [One day,] the phone rang...
“Hold on for Mr. Jackson...” the voice on the telephone announced. Before I could collect my thoughts, there was a male voice on the line, and I heard myself saying, “Michael?”
“Nice to hear from you...” Michael replied in a warm and friendly manner, which immediately made me feel comfortable and relaxed. Michael was very gracious and complimentary about my letter and began expressing his appreciation and gratitude for the endeavours of all his supporters. He emphasised the point by saying to me, “Please understand my appreciation for everybody’s love and all the loving support... because I really appreciate it... appreciate everything... really, I do.
” As Michael was speaking, I was immediately struck by his heartfelt sincerity. […]
Fortunately, Michael was very fluent and did all the initial talking, which made it easy for me to join the conversation. My first response was to thank Michael sincerely for his call and express how honoured I was that he would take the time to acknowledge our work, especially as I was aware of the great demands on his time. Michael was very kind and reciprocated my sentiment.
Throughout the telephone call, Michael was extremely repetitive in the proclamation of his love and appreciation to his fans for everything that they have done for him over the years; their undying love and support. […] He seemed to want to make it very clear that he is aware of our efforts on his behalf. He wanted the message to go out to all of the fans and emphasised that I should let everyone know how he felt. Later in the conversation, Michael wanted me specifically to thank the fans who came to see him recently in London.
He explained how he had wanted to greet the fans personally, but that the restrictions imposed on him by the police made it difficult for him to do so. He also made special mention of the fans who had travelled to and supported him in Santa Maria [California, during his 2005 trial], and wanted me to let them know how much he appreciated their support and that he drew strength from it.
Throughout our conversation, Michael continually made reference to one main subject, which is something I have been aware of both as a fan and a Fan Club President for almost 20 years: he recognises the support and contribution from ALL his fans, be that the fan who has little opportunity to travel to the city when Michael is in town – or perhaps can’t afford concert tickets and travel when Michael is touring the world – or maybe doesn’t even have internet connection to enable messageboard discussions.
But they support Michael in their hearts, follow the documentaries on television, join the fan clubs and buy his records and merchandise when it is available. Michael was saying thank you to these fans, just as much as he was reaching out to those who [are] at great personal and financial sacrifice, travelled halfway across the world to camp out in Santa Maria during the trial, so that Michael would know that he was not alone.
Michael, then became very excited as he told me about a new song which he had written and which he wanted the fans to know about, saying, “I can’t wait to record it. I wrote it during the trial. You could let them know...” The song Michael was inspired to write for the fans during the trial is titled ‘You Are So Beautiful.’ I asked him to clarify for me - would this song be on the next album? And, this is a different song to the as-yet unnamed charity single? He confirmed "yes" to both questions.
Then, suddenly, Michael became very playful as he excitedly spoke about MJNI’s KING! magazine. He told me how much he loved KING! and mentioned a couple of his favourite articles (in particular, one about Neverland.) […]
[…] He said, “I am writing constantly...” […] Recalling the time I became a fan myself during the Bad tour and the sheer enjoyment of hearing Michael perform live, and pushing the point – maybe too far – I suggested that [he could do] a handful of concerts in small venues would be fantastic and that it didn’t necessarily have to be a grand world tour. Michael accepted my comments with grace and humility – an attribute which, when describing Michael, can’t be emphasised strongly enough […].
Michael once again brought the conversation around to talking about his love for his fans, saying: “I love them and everything they do... everything. I see everything they do, I don’t miss anything. I notice and feel everything, from their letters and posters and signs and gifts...” There was a sense of urgency in Michael’s voice and by this time, I was really beginning to become aware of a feeling of frustration in Michael at his inability to convey to his tens of thousands of fans across the globe, just how much he cares for them – that he would love to be able to show to them more, his gratitude and appreciation for their years of loyal support....
And with that, the conversation was at its end. With sincerity in his voice, Michael bid farewell by saying “God Bless You” several times, and then excused himself. […]”

L'8 novembre 2005 Gloria Haydock (Presidente della ormai chiuso fanclub, MJNI) ha ricevuto una rara telefonata da Michael Jackson, e questo è quello che lei dice sul suo sito riguardo a questo:
"[...] Ho ricevuto una telefonata, quel giorno, apparentemente di punto in bianco, da Michael. [...] Da una selezione di messaggi che ho visto sulla bacheca di MJNI.COM, alcuni fan non capiscono perchè Michael mi ha telefonato. [...]. Mentre il processo si avvicinava, abbiamo deciso di lanciare una campagna che permetteva ai fan di tutto il mondo di mostrare il loro sostegno per Michael. Così, il 13 novembre del 2004, il team di MJNI ha lanciato MJNI.COM Support Michael .
Il nostro obiettivo era quello di raggiungere almeno 10.000 impegni entro la fine del processo, un obiettivo che , insieme con il supporto di decine di fan club di molti paesi in tutto il mondo si sarebbe ottenuto facilmente. Già nel 2002, quando Michael aveva bisogno di una piattaforma per poter parlare con i fan, ha accettato il nostro invito a visitare il Regno Unito e abbiamo organizzato il nostro Thriller Killer party e una marcia per Londra, con un conseguente forte dimostrazione di sostegno di 2000 fan!
Chi può dimenticare il discorso di quindici minuti di Michael a Killer Thriller? Fu monumentale! Durante la sua recente visita a Londra, Michael ha ricevuto una mia lettera che spiega la nostra campagna durante il processo, ed è leggendo questa il motivo per cui mi ha chiamata per esprimere il suo ringraziamento e la gratitudine a noi, ai fan, con le sue parole, per il nostro "sostegno, amore e lealtà." [...]. [Un giorno] squillò il telefono
..."Tieni duro perchè è il signor Jackson ..." la voce al telefono ha annunciato. Prima che potessi raccogliere i miei pensieri, ci fu una voce maschile sulla linea, e mi sono sentita di dire: "Michael?".
"Piacere di sentirti.." Michael replicava con un tono calmo e amichevole che mi ha fatto sentire subito a mio agio e rilassata.
Michael si è dimostrato molto riconoscente e gentile [...] iniziando a esprimermi gratitudine e apprezzamento per tutti i suoi supporters. Lo ha enfatizzato dicendomi: "Per favore, estendi il mio apprezzamento per la lealtà di tutti e per il supporto dimostrato, perchè l'ho veramente apprezzato, ho apprezzato ogni cosa, davvero."
Mentre Michael parlava, mi sono subito stupita dalla sua sincerità. [...] Fortunatamente Michael è stato molto socievole iniziando sempre lui la conversazione cosa che mi reso più facile comunicare con lui. La mia prima risposta fu quella di ringraziarlo sinceramente per la chiamata ed esprimere quanto ero onorata che lui aveva aveva trovato il tempo di riconoscere il nostro lavoro , soprattutto perché ero consapevole delle grandi esigenze sui suoi tempi. Michael è stato molto gentile e ha ricambiato il mio sentimento.
Durante la telefonata Michael è stato molto ripetitivo nel sottolineare il proprio amore e il proprio apprezzamento ai suoi fans per ogni cosa che loro hanno fatto per lui durante tutti questi anni, il loro incondizionato amore e supporto. E così ho potuto capire quanto sia per Michael importante che i fans sappiano del suo amore e interessamento verso i fan stessi. Sembrava volesse ribadire di essere stato a conoscenza di ogni sforzo e supporto a suo sostegno. Ha sottolineato che voleva che il messaggio di ringraziamento arrivasse a tutti i fans per far capire loro i suoi sentimenti.
Più avanti nella conversazione Michael mi ha chiesto specificatamente di ringraziare i fans che sono andati recentemente a Londra per vederlo. Mi ha spiegato quanto voleva incontrare i fan ma che le restrizioni imposte dalla polizia hanno reso difficile la cosa.
Ha anche menzionato in maniera speciale i fans che hanno viaggiato e lo hanno supportato a Santa Maria [durante il suo processo del 2005] ribadendo quanto fosse stata apprezzata la cosa e come gli avesse dato coraggio.
Durante la conversazione, Michael ha continuamente fatto riferimento ad una cosa che ho ben presente come fan e come leader di fan club da oltre 20 anni: apprezza il supporto ed ogni sostegno da tutti i suoi fans, da quelli che hanno poche possibilità di vederlo quando lui è in qualche città, a quelli che non possono permettersi i biglietti per i concerti o viaggiare quando gira il mondo in tournee fino a quelli che non avendo internet non possono partecipare ed interagire con i forum.
Ma loro supportano Michael nel loro cuore, seguendo i documentari, iscrivendosi ai fan clubs e comprando i suoi dischi e merchandising quando disponibili. Michael dice a questi fans grazie allo stesso modo di come ringrazia quelli che, con sacrifici non solo economici, hanno viaggiato e si sono accampati a Santa Maria per il processo per farlo sentire meno solo.
Poi Michael è diventato più eccitato parlandomi una nuova canzone che ha scritto e del quale vuole che i fans vengano a conoscenza dicendomi "Non vedo l'ora di registrarla. L'ho scritto durante il processo, puoi farglielo sapere [ai fan ndr.]..." La canzone che Michael ha scritto durante il processo pe ri fan si intitola "You Are So Beautiful". Gli ho chiesto di chiarirmi se questa canzone sarebbe stata nel suo prossimo album e se questa fosse differente dalla canzone che tutti stiamo aspettando a breve per la raccolta fondi ... Lui mi ha risposto "Sì" ad entrambe le domande.
Poi mi è parso più giocherellone ed eccitato parlandomi del magazine KING . Mi ha detto quanto amasse KING e mi ha menzionato un paio di articoli, suoi preferiti (uno in particolare riguardo a Neveland).
[...] Avendo già parlato di nuova musica, ho chiesto a Michael se sapesse quando il nuovo album sarebbe uscito; lui è rimasto sul vago... Mi ha detto: "Scrivo in continuazione", mi ha poi detto che non ci vorrà molto e che era in studio.
Ho poi chiesto se si sarebbe esibito ancora in concerto dicendogli che a noi fans sarebbe piaciuto molto rivederlo cantare live. E ancora mi ha risposto che non ne è sicuro riguardo ciò e che probabilmente farà film. Ho detto a Michael che una delle ragioni per cui lui ha così tanti fans leali è proprio perchè è ha un talento eccezionale e che sarebbe stato fantastico risentirlo cantare live. Ricordandomi quando divenni io fan durante il Bad Tour e la gioia nel vederlo esibirsi, ho osato di più, forse troppo, suggerendogli che magari sarebbero bastate poche date in posti più intimi invece che un intero world tour.
Michael ha accettato i miei suggerimenti e i miei commenti con gentilezza ed umiltà, una qualità che parlando del Re del Pop non viene mai enfatizzata abbastanza, ma non credo si renda conto di quanto noi disperatamente vogliamo vederlo nuovamente onstage. Potrei fantasticare tutto il giorno su Michael che canta Speechless in un evento speciale su inviti per noi suoi fan, ma... torniamo alla realtà...
Michael ancora una volta portava la converasione verso il suo amore per i fans dicendo: "Amo loro e tutto quello che fanno, ogni cosa. Vedo ogni cosa che fanno, non mi perdo niente. Noto e sento ogni cosa, dalle loro lettere e posters ai gesti e i regali..."
A questo punto si avvertiva un senso di inquietudine nella voce di Michael, mi rendevo conto del tipo di frustrazione possa provare Michael per la sua impossibilità di poter raggiungere le migliaia di fans sparsi per il mondo, far capire loro quanto li ami e tenga a loro; vorrebbe mostrare loro di più, la sua gratitudine e apprezzamento per i molti anni di leale supporto.
... E con questo la conversazione era alla fine. Con sincerità nella sua voce, Michael mi ha lasciato ripetendo "Dio vi benedica" diverse volte e scusandosi. Ecco che la conversazione che rimarrà per sempre nella mia mente era giunta al termine. [...]

Mi ricordo di questa comunicazione.E mi ricordo anche che pensai forse non era stato così ' intelligente' pretendere o domandare di tour album in un momento del genere.
Ma poi pensai che Gloria semplicemente non sapesse che dire, sorpresa dalla telefonata e che per quanto Michael fosse stato accogliente, facilitando la conversazione ( alla fine un pò sterile),lei non si fosse rilassata affatto. Oppure semplicemente cercava di fargli pensare a qualunque altra cosa che non fosse tutto quanto aveva e comunque stava passando.
Ad ogni modo è stato bello rileggerla.
