Robin Ross post June 25~Remembering Michael Jackson today and recording today's song 'Be Not Always' ~

Having had the pleasure and experience of working with Michael Jackson was a highlight of my career. It started with a phone call from Ben Wright,( an icon himself for his amazing symphonic funk string arrangements) one spring morning in 1981. Asked if I was available for a session later that day and I accepted. Did not know who it was for till I was called about 4pm that it was for Michael Jackson at his place in Encino, and to be there by 6pm.
I arrive and just entered the elevator of his townhouse facility and ready to push the button to go to the next floor, Michael says, "Are you Robin?" in his very recognizable voice.( I melted for a moment....but had to be professional). Michael escorted me to the townhouse. we had to wait for one more musician, guitar player Greg Poree, (first call studio guitar musician extroidinare) he was running late. So Janet Jackson was there (all but about less then 16) and offered me tea, while Michael asked me questions about when, where and how I started playing the Viola.

He wanted to know about going to public school and carrying my instrument to school and was I made fun of or bullied. I figured he wanted to know more about a "normal" childhood. Finally Greg arrives and we get to work. Michael instructs both of us what he wanted musically: the tune, chords for Greg and what and when he wanted a counter melody from my part. He express the fact he wanted this combination for this song (voice, guitar and viola). We recorded this tune on a "ghetto" boom box in his livingroom.

About less then two years later Greg and I were called in to actually record this song at a Hollywood studio. It is a gorgeous sensitive tune called "Be Not Always" and was to be part of the Jackson Five "Victory" album, released in the summer of 1983. Now Michael's wish was to have this song for only voice, guitar and viola, well I heard it on the radio for the first time and they added strings.
Hope you have a listen to this beautiful tune...........
Thank you Michael Jackson for this opportunity.
