Secondo le deposizioni della grande giuria del 1994, a Michael è stato diagnosticato il lupus discoide nel 1986.

La vitiligine e il lupus sono entrambi disturbi auto immuni; malattie dove il sistema immunitario attacca le proprie cellule. Quando avete una malattia auto immune la tua propensione per averne un’altra è in aumentato e sembra che Michael ha sviluppato la vitiligine da bambino e poi i primi segni del Lupus li ha avuti a 18 anni, quando ha sofferto un pneumotorace legato alla pleurite, seguito dalla comparsa del lupus discoide a 24 anni.

Gli si è presentato uno dei sintomi della malattia, l’esantema a “farfalla” nel 1983 e 1984, che riapparve nuovamente nel 1986.

Il lupus discoide e lesioni cutanee

Nel 1990 e nel 1991 Michael è stato visto indossare spesso un piccolo cerotto, nella parte destra del naso.

Fu anche visto con macchie in altre occasioni; a sinistra la fine degli anni ' 90 e sulla destra un foto scattata intorno al 2002



Questi segni sono coerenti con le lesioni del lupus , un'altra forma sintomatica del lupus discoide:

“Le lesioni sono normalmente infiammate, incrostate o ridimensionate nel loro aspetto, la carnagione al centro e chiara mentre all’ esterno è più scura.”



Il Lupus e la fotosensibilità

Questo è quello che Michael ha detto sulla sua sensibilità del sole:

Domanda: Perché stai indossando una maschera di seta nelle tue ultime apparizioni?
Michael: Perché... ehm... con il tempo le condizioni della mia pelle sono peggiorate. Mi dispiace dirlo. Ho la vitiligine e uh, sono totalmente, completamente allergico al sole. Non penso di uscire fuori attualmente, anche se sono all’ombra i raggi solari possono distruggere la mia pelle.

E' noto che usava ombrelli:





Il 1986 è quando a Michael è stato diagnosticato il lupus , questo è anche l’anno quando ha iniziato a indossare la mascherina chirurgica per coprire il suo volto. Verso la fine degli anni 80 ha anche iniziato a portare ombrelli. Questo è perché il lupus si aggrava con l’esposizione al sole.

-La fotosensibilità è una caratteristica comune del lupus eritematoso.
-La stragrande maggioranza delle lesioni specifiche del lupus si verificano sulle zone esposte al sole.
-Nelle persone con lupus cutaneo, la fotosensibilità colpisce il 50% di quelli con lupus liscoide e 70-90% di quelli con lupus cutaneo sub acuto.
-Inoltre, persone con lupus cutaneo sub acuto eritematoso, soprattutto coloro che hanno anticorpi anti-Ro (SSA) dimostrano marcata fotosensibilità.
-È stato stimato che il 90% dei pazienti con Lupus discoide o sistemico che hanno anticorpi anti-Ro (SSA) sono fotosensibili.
-Inoltre, un certo numero di questi pazienti è così fotosensibile che bruciano attraverso il vetro delle finestre.
-Ci sono evidenze cliniche che dimostrano che la luce ultravioletta può indurre scottature in persone con LES.
-Una volta aveva iniziato a coprirsi il volto i suoi esantemi sembravano essersi arrestati.



Lupus discoide e le cicatrici della chirurgia plastica

Il suo primo esantema apparve nel 1983, che è anche quando ha avuto la sua seconda rinoplastica.
Dr Richard Strick , uno dei medici nominati dal procuratore distrettuale per eseguire l’esame ordinato dalla corte su Michael nel dicembre 1993, aveva esaminato la documentazione medica di Michael e ha dichiarato che le ragioni per le quali Michael aveva avuto così tante rinoplastiche erano per scopo "ricostruttivo" a causa dei problemi di guarigione e cicatrizzazione della pelle associati alla sua lupus discoide.

"Il lupus è anche una malattia autoimmune che aveva anche coinvolto la cute e aveva distrutto parte della pelle del naso. Tutti i suoi interventi chirurgici nasali erano ricostruttivi, per cercare di farlo apparire normale."

Quindi tutte queste ricostruzioni nasali che sta dicendo erano per trattare il suo lupus ?

"La prima era per cercare di ricostruire qualche tessuto cicatriziale e ostruzione che erano accaduti con la pelle. Non ha funzionato molto bene e tutti i tentativi successivi sono stati per sistemare il lavoro.
Credo che stava cercando di apparire come un ragazzo normale, migliore di quello che poteva".

Secondo il Dott. Brooke Seckel:
"Il lupus può causare la morte di grandi aree di pelle, del viso o della pancia, che dopo la chirurgia plastica diventano terribili cicatrici".

Il fatto che la sua seconda rinoplastica si è verificata durante una riacutizzazione del lupus discoide rese complicata la guarigione, ed è per questo aveva avuto bisogno di una rinoplastica ricostruttiva a lavoro svolto.



Non ha affetto solo la sua pelle: Michael, lupus e pleurite

Riguardo lo stato dei polmoni (Le "bolle" delle quali Michael ha parlato a Quincy Jones) si trattava di pleurite, la quale gli era stata diagnosticata nel 1977 – la Pleurite è di natura autoimmune e direttamente collegata al Lupus.

“Complicazioni cardiopolmonari da LES, quelle che interessano i polmoni in particolare, sono comuni nei pazienti affetti dal lupus . Spesso, il Lupus può innescare infiammazione del rivestimento che circonda i polmoni, la pleura, provocando dolore quando si respira o si tossisce. Questa condizione si chiama pleurite. È la più comune manifestazione polmonare del lupus .”

Sintomi:

“Il sintomo principale della pleurite, tuttavia, è il dolore al petto o alla spalla, peggiorato dalla profonda respirazione, la tosse e il movimento del torace. Può anche causare un incremento di liquido nel torace, rendendo la respirazione difficile e provocando tosse, cianosi (la pelle diventa bluastra a causa della deprivazione di ossigeno; si verifica però solo nei casi più estremi di accumulo di fluido pleurico a causa della pleurite da lupus ), mancanza di respiro e respirazione accelerata.”

Il problemi con i suoi polmoni sembra siano iniziati all'età di 18 anni, dopo che Michael ha sofferto un pneumotorace nel 1977.

“Michael Jackson si è sentito nuovamente energico dopo il dolore subito dal recente collasso di un polmone che costretto la cancellazione di un mese di concerti dei The Jacksons. Spiegando la condizione di disagio del figlio, Joseph W. Jackson ha spiegato al presidente dell’ Ivory Tower Records: Il collasso polmonare di Michael è avvenuto come conseguenza del troppo lavoro per la serie televisiva di famiglia e degli altri progetti.
Essenzialmente quello che accade è che, in un periodo di tempo appare una bolla sul polmone e alla fine scoppia. Ogni volta che succede, una frazione del polmone si distrugge. Le persone non si rendono conto di come la rete televisiva può influenzarvi, anche durante uno spettacolo di 30 minuti."

Costretto a stare a riposo per un mese, Michael ritornò indietro sui suoi passi per iniziare le riprese nel ruolo come Spaventapasseri nella versione film di The Wiz a New York City.
Suo padre, ha detto, "Si sente bene adesso. Se non fosse così, certamente non lo avrei lasciato andare a New York."

“Tuttavia, prima di iniziare le riprese principali, Michael ha avuto un vero e proprio allarme di salute. Come dice: Ho avuto un attacco polmonare sulla spiaggia il quattro luglio. Non riuscivo a respirare. Hanno dovuto portarmi di corsa all'ospedale. Il dottore ha detto che era un pneumotorace; bolle nei polmoni, le bolle scoppiano e non puoi respirare.
Molte persone magre ce l’hanno, ha detto il dottore. Ha detto che era un po’ di pleurite. Mi ha ricordato che Buddy Ebsen, che doveva essere l'uomo di latta nel Mago di Oz originale, si ammalò dopo ciò.”

E poi ancora nella sua autobiografia Moonwalk del 1988

"L'intero periodo di Wiz è stato un periodo di stress e ansia, anche se mi stavo divertendo. Ricordo bene il 4 luglio dello stesso anno, perché ero in spiaggia a casa di mio fratello Jermaine, circa mezzo isolato di distanza dal lungo lungomare. Mi stavo cimentando con il surf, e tutto ad un tratto non riuscivo a respirare. Senza aria. Niente. Mi sono chiesto che cosa non andasse? Ho cercato di non farmi prendere dal panico, e sono tornato in casa per cercare Jermaine, che mi ha portato in ospedale. Era stato pericoloso. Un vaso sanguigno mi era scoppiato nel polmone. Non era mai successo, anche se a volte sentivo pizzichi e spasmi, che erano probabilmente la mia immaginazione. Ho imparato più tardi che questa condizione era connessa con la pleurite. Mi è stato suggerito dal medico di provare a prendere le cose con calma, ma il mio programma non me lo consentirebbe. Il duro lavoro ha continuato ad essere il nome del gioco. "

La sua autopsia ha confermato i problemi con i suoi polmoni, che sono stati dichiarati cronicamente infiammati con una ridotta capacità:

-Marcata bronchiolite respiratoria, desquamazione istiocitica e la polmonite interstiziale cronica multifocale
-Suggestiva desquamazione focale della mucosa respiratoria con metaplasia squamosa

Nelle note mediche del dottor Conrad Murray su Michael inserite nel suo processo del 2011, rende nota la pleurite e dice che MJ aveva avuto una tosse con sangue nel marzo del 2007:



“3/07 (non dato giorno):
"M" — tosse, brividi, (tagliati)
con specifiche intermittenti di sangue (tagliato)
Verdastro catarro marrone
Dolore toracico pleuritico con tosse (tagliata)
inferiore della gabbia toracica
petto raggi x positivo per polmonite del lobo inferiore destro”



Michael è stato trattato da uno reumatologo specialista del lupus , il Dottor Allan Metzger

Uno dei suoi medici di vecchia data era il Dottor Allan Metzger, reumatologo specialista del lupus .
Egli curò Michael durante la sua permanenza nel 1995 e addirittura quando Prince si ammalò nel 1999. Erano così vicini che Metzger era colui che videoregistrò il matrimonio di Michael e di Debbie e fù il padrino di uno dei figli di Michael. Il 1° ottobre del 2003 entrambi hanno partecipato e fatto un breve discorso insieme ad una serata d'amore, luce e risate, una serata di beneficenze per l’ LA Lupus e la ricerca sul lupus al Beverly Hills Hotel a Beverly Hills, California.



Le persone si sono chieste il motivo per cui nell’ autopsia nella sua diagnosi non è mai apparso il lupus – purtroppo, questa è la natura della malattia. Sembra che non è stato eseguito un test ANA (secondo i risultati disponibili on-line), ma anche così, le persone con lupus non sempre sono positive al test, numerosi test sono coinvolti nella diagnosi di questo disordine. Anche coloro che soffrono principalmente di lupus discoide tendono a non essere positive ad un test ANA.
Anche se in quel rapporto ci sono un paio di cose interessanti – l'alopecia, l’ anemia, le emorragie trovate nei polmoni sono coerenti con la pleurite e la prescrizione che egli aveva per il prednisone.



Trattamento per il lupus – Idrossiclorochina

Il 16 giugno 1995 l’ autore Randy Taraborrelli afferma che Michael ha voluto parlare del suo lupus e la vitiligine in una discussione con Diane Sawyer e in particolare la droga "idrossiclorochina"

“Il biografo di Michael Jackson, J. Randy Taraborrelli sostiene che l'artista ha voluto parlare di più del colore della sua pelle durante la sua intervista con Diane Sawyer "PrimeTime Live".”

Lo scrittore dice che Jackson gli ha detto di avere il lupus discoide, una malattia di forma irreversibile, che gli richiede di assumere un farmaco chiamato idrossiclorochina. E, secondo Jackson, il farmaco causa la perdita della pigmentazione, cioè provoca la vitiligine.
Il dermatologo N.Y., Dr Howard Sobel, ci dice, "E’ possibile che la clorochina causi l’ipopigmentazione, ma è difficile da dire se è la causa del suo problema. La clorochina si lega alla melanina, che è responsabile del pigmento della nostra pelle. Se ciò accade, è possibile avere una zona biancastra sulla pelle."

Su Wikipedia si afferma l'uso dell’ idrossiclorochina per il lupus:

La iniziale per adulti è di 400 milligrammi una a due volte al giorno, per diverse settimane o mesi, a seconda della reazione. Questa può essere ridotto da 400 milligrammi a 200 al giorno per mantenimento. Con lupus sistematico, è particolarmente utile nell'alleviamento dell’ infiammazione della pelle, perdita dei capelli, piaghe orali, stanchezza e dolori articolari così come prevenire la ricaduta.

Che è coerente con i sintomi del lupus che Michael stava cercando di curare.



Trattamento per lupus – Prednisone

Nella sua relazione dell'autopsia è stato dichiarato che hanno trovato una droga chiamata Prednisone in casa sua.

“Droga: Prednisone
Prescritto: 25/04/2009, Dott. Klein
N. di pillole: 10
Pillole rimanenti: 0
Indicazioni: 6 ora, domani 4”

Il prednisone è uno dei più comuni farmaci utilizzati per il trattamento del lupus. Lupus Canada parla del farmaco:

“Nel capitolo trattamento del lupus con farmaci, ho parlato del prednisone come singolo fattore più importante nel migliorare le prospettive per i pazienti con il lupus . È uno strumento molto potente nel trattamento del lupus , è solitamente efficace nel tenere il lupus sotto controllo e salva la vita.”

Il prednisone ha effetti collaterali, alcuni dei quali sono:

“Gonfiore del viso, spesso chiamato "faccia di luna" o "guance di chipmunk"; alcuni pazienti si sentono brutti e dicono che non si riconoscono più allo specchio. Ricordate, questi cambiamenti sono reversibili.

Aumento di peso; il prednisone può causare un grande aumento dell’ appetito. L’ aumento di peso può essere controllato con una dieta a basso contenuto calorico, con esercizio fisico e con l’ evito del sale. Evitare cibi salati e non aggiungere sale.”

Michael ha parlato anche di aver cambiato la dieta in una vegetariana nei primi anni 80, questo potrebbe essere anche dovuto al lupus . I medici di Michael hanno detto che gli era stato diagnosticato il lupus nel 1986, questa è una foto di Michael nel 1986:



Il suo volto è diventato notevolmente gonfio e sembra che abbia la cosiddetta "faccia di luna", che sembra in linea con l'idea del suo trattamento per la malattia con il steroide chiamato prednisone. Si dice anche che ha avuto una riacutizzazione del lupus nel 2002 e ancora una volta in una foto nel 2002 le sue guance sono gonfie e la faccia ha lo stesso aspetto, come avvenne nel 1986.




Altri effetti collaterali:

“Problemi di stomaco; per alleviare il bruciore, provare a prendere il prednisone con il cibo. Questo problema può richiedere il farmaco anti-ulcera.

Cambiamenti di umore; a volte il cambiamento è in meglio. Tuttavia, la depressione può essere aggravata dal prednisone.

Insonnia; i pazienti possono avere difficoltà a dormire di notte.

Movimenti improvvisi; i pazienti possono avere sensazioni di essere "iperattivi”: o che"le cose stanno correndo veloci dentro la mia testa".
Debolezza dei muscoli della coscia; i pazienti possono avere difficoltà nel salire le scale, uscire dalla vasca da bagno o alzarsi da una sedia o wc sedile.

Aumento del rischio di infezioni; i pazienti possono avere più infezioni, tra cui alcuni causate da germi ai quali il corpo è resistente normalmente.

Nel 2002 Michael girato con Bashir il documentario di 8 mesi "Vivere con Michael Jackson"; l’ ex moglie Lisa Marie allora ha detto guardando i filmati che: “Lui o era troppo svelto o era come sedato. Non era il Michael che conoscevo,” questo potrebbe essere dovuto al prednisone. Questo farmaco gli era stato prescritto due mesi prima di morire e aveva preso tutto il dosaggio prescritto; questo è anche lo stesso periodo, dove sembra che il dottor Conrad Murray ha iniziato a usare il propofol per indurre il sonno a Michael. Come si può vedere uno degli effetti collaterali del Prednisone è l'insonnia, così parte del problema con il suo sonno può avere implicato l'uso di questo farmaco. La sua battaglia con l'insonnia è qualcosa che lui sembra avere sofferto per molti anni, entrambe le sue mogli; Lisa Marie e Debbie Rowe ne hanno parlato.

Lisa ha avuto una relazione con lui dal 1993-2000, nella sua intervista di Oprah nel 2010 ha detto:

Oprah: Aveva difficoltà a dormire?
Lisa: Era come un piccolo gnomo. Ero abituata a chiamarlo così perché era come uno gnomo che girava per la stanza perché aveva difficoltà a dormire. Un sacco di volte, non riuscivo a dormire se lui non dormiva. Lo trovavo poco importante. Era molto accattivante ma poi non ci feci più caso. Comunque sì, lui aveva un sonno difficile da molto tempo.

E Debbie Rowe che è stata sposata con lui dal 1996-1999 ha detto in un magazine (lei non aveva capito che la stavano registrando) nel 1997:

Debbie: Lui starà in piedi fino alle 4 di mattina camminando, pensando. Qualche volta lui verrà da me nel bel mezzo della notte quando sono addormentata a conficcarmi cose nel naso o nell’ orecchio e svegliarmi. A volte mi sveglio e quando non lo sento sono in preda al panico. Quando mi rendo conto che si è addormentato, vado nella sua stanza ed entro nel suo letto per poter dormire insieme.”

According to the testimony of the Great jury of 1994, in 1986 Michael was diagnosed with discoid lupus.

Vitiligo and lupus are both auto immune disorders; diseases where the immune system attacks its own cells. When you have an auto immune disease your propensity for having another is increased and it seems that Michael has developed vitiligo when he was a child and then to 18 had the early signs of lupus, when he suffered a pneumothorax linked to pleurisy, followed by the appearance of discoid lupus at 24.

He presented with one of the trademark symptoms of the illness, the Malar or Butterfly Rash in 1983 and 1984, which reappeared again in 1986.

Discoid Lupus And Skin Lesions

In 1990 and 1991 Michael was seen wearing a small plaster on his face just to the right of his nose

He was also seen with blemishes on other occasions, on the left in the late 90s and on the right a photo taken around 2002



These marks are consistent with lupus lesions, another symptomatic form of discoid lupus:
The lesions normally are inflamed, crusty or scaling in its appearance, with the lighter complexion at the center and rims being darker.



Photosensitivity and Lupus

This is what Michael has said about his sun sensitivity:

Question: Why are you wearing a silk mask in your latest appearances?
Michael: Because… uh… with time my skin condition has gotten worse. I hate to say it. I have vitiligo and uh, I am totally completely allergic to the sun. I’m not even suppose to be outside actually, even if I am in the shade the sunrays can destroy my skin.


He is of course famous for having been seen carrying an umbrella:





1986 is when Michael was diagnosed with lupus and is also when he started wearing the surgical mask to cover his face, the late 80s is also when he first started carrying around umbrellas. This is because lupus is aggravated by sun exposure.

-Photosensitivity is a common feature of lupus erythematosus.
-The overwhelming majority of specific lupus lesions, occur on sun-exposed areas.
-In people with cutaneous lupus, photosensitivity affects 50 percent of those with discoid lupus and 70-90 percent of those with subacute cutaneous lupus.
-Furthermore, people with subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus, especially those who have anti-Ro (SSA) antibodies demonstrate pronounced photosensitivity.
-It has been estimated that 90% of patients with systemic or discoid lupus who have anti-Ro (SSA) antibodies are photosensitive.
-Furthermore, a number of these patients are so photosensitive that they will burn through window glass.
-Also there is clinical evidence that shows that ultraviolet light can induce flares in people with sle.



Discoid Lupus and Plastic Surgery Scarring

His first malar rash appeared in 1983 which is also when he had his second nose job. Dr Richard Strick, one of the doctors appointed by the District Attorney who performed the court ordered examination of Michael in December 1993 had reviewed his medical records and has said that the reason Michael had so many nose jobs was because they were “reconstructive” due to the skin healing problems and scarring associated with his discoid lupus.

“Lupus is also an autoimmune disease and he also had skin involvement, which had destroyed part of the skin of his nose and his nasal surgeries and all were really reconstructive, to try and look normal. “

So all these nose reconstructions you’re saying were as a result of him treating his lupus?

“The first one was to try and reconstruct from some scar tissue and obstruction that had happened with the skin there. It didn’t work out very well and all subsequent attempts were to make it right.
I think he was trying to look like a normal guy as best as that he could.”

According to Dr Brooke Seckel:
"Lupus can cause large areas of skin on the face or tummy to actually die after plastic surgery and result in terrible scars."

The fact that his second nose job occurred during a discoid lupus flare up likely did complicate the healing there and this is why he needed reconstructive work done.



It didn't just affect his skin: Michael, SLE Lupus and Pleurisy

Regarding the state of his lungs (the “blisters” Michael would tell Quincy Jones about), this was the pleurisy that he’d been diagnosed with in 1977 – pleurisy is autoimmune in nature and directly associated with lupus.

"Cardiopulmonary complications from SLE, those affecting the lungs specifically, are common in lupus patients. Often, lupus can trigger inflammation of the lining surrounding the lungs, the pleura, causing pain when breathing or coughing. This condition is called pleurisy or pleuritis. It is the most common pulmonary manifestation of lupus."

Symptoms:

"Pleurisy’s main symptom, however, is pain in the chest and, possibly, the shoulder, worsened by deep breathing, coughing, and movement of the chest. It can also cause a build up of fluid in the chest, making breathing difficult and causing coughing, cyanosis (blueness of the skin from oxygen deprivation; occurring in only the most extreme cases of pleural fluid accumulation due to lupus pleuritis), shortness of breath and rapid breathing."

The issue with his lungs seems to have begun at the age of 18 after Michael suffered a pneumothorax in 1977.

"Michael Jackson is feeling his old energetic self again after suffering a lung collapse recently that forced a month’s cancellation of The Jackson family concerts. Explaining his son’s uncomfortable condition, Joseph W. Jackson, president of Ivory Tower Records, explained to Jet, “Michael’s lung collapse came as a result of overwork from the family’s television series and other projects. Essentially what happened is that over a period of time a bubble appears on the lung and eventually bursts. Each time it does, a fraction of the lung is destroyed. People don’t realize how the grind of television can affect you, even during just a 30- minute show.”

Restricted to total rest for a month, Michael bounced back on his feet to begin filming his role as the Scarecrow in the upcoming movie version of The Wiz in New York City.

Said his father, “He’s feeling all right now. If he weren’t I certainly wouldn’t have let him go to New York.”

Michael stated that the issues with his lungs involved pleurisy in “The Wiz,” by Mark Bego published in 1983

"However, before principal filming began, Michael had a real physical health scare. As he tells it, “I had a lung attack on the beach on the Fourth of July. I couldn’t breathe. They had to rush me to the emergency hospital. The doctor said it was pneumothorax; bubbles on the lungs, and the bubbles burst and you can’t breathe. Mostly slim people have it, the doctor said. He said there was a little bit of pleurisy there too. It reminded me that Buddy Ebsen was supposed to be the Tin Man in the original Wizard of Oz and he broke down sick before the thing.”

And then again in his Moonwalk autobiography in 1988

“The whole Wiz period was a time of stress and anxiety, even though I was enjoying myself. I remember July 4 of that year well, because I was on the beach at my brother Jermaine’s house, about half a block away along the waterfront. I was messing around in the surf, and all of a sudden I couldn’t breathe. No air. Nothing. I asked myself what’s wrong? I tried not to panic, but I ran back to the house to find Jermaine, who took me to the hospital. It was wild. A blood vessel had burst in my lung. It has never reoccurred, although I used to feel little pinches and jerks in there that were probably my imagination. I later learnt that this condition was related to pleurisy. It was suggested by my doctor that I try to take things a little slower, but my schedule would not permit it. Hard work continued to be the name of the game.”

His autopsy report confirmed the problems with his lungs, which were reported as being chronically inflamed with a reduced capacity:

-Marked respiratory bronchiolitis, histiocytic desquamation, and multifocal chronic interstitial pneumonitis
-Suggestive focal desquamation of respiratory lining with squamous metaplasia

In Dr Conrad Murray’s medical notes entered into his 2011 trial for Michael he makes note of the pleurisy and says that MJ was coughing up blood in March 2007:

Michael Was Treated By a Lupus Specialist Rheumatologist, Dr Allan Metzger

One of his long time physicians was a Dr Allan Metzger, a lupus specialist rheumatologist. He treated Michael during his stay in 1995 and even treated Prince during an illness he suffered from in in 1999. They were so close that Metzger was the one who videotaped Michael and Debbie’s wedding and was godfather to one of Michael’s kids. On October 1st 2003 they both attended and gave a brief speech together at an Evening of Love, Light and Laughter, a benefit for Lupus LA and Lupus Research at the Beverly Hills Hotel in Beverly Hills, California.

People have questioned why his diagnosis for Lupus never came out in his autopsy – unfortunately that’s the nature of the disease. It seems an ANA test wasn’t performed (according to the results available online), but even so, people with lupus don’t always test positive, numerous tests are involved in the diagnosis of this disorder. Those who suffer mainly from discoid lupus also tend not to test positive in an ANA test. Though in that report there are a couple of interesting things noted – the alopecia, he was anemic, the hemorrhages found in his lungs are consistent with the pleurisy he described being afflicted with as early as 1977 and the prescription for Prednisone.



Treatment for Lupus - Hydroxychloroquine

On June 16th, 1995 author Randy Taraborrelli claims Michael wanted to bring up his Lupus and Vitiligo in a discussion with Diane Sawyer and specifically the drug “Hydroxychloroquine”

"Michael Jackson biographer J. Randy Taraborrelli claims the performer wanted to talk more about the color of his skin during his “PrimeTime Live” interview with Diane Sawyer."

The writer says Jackson told him he now has discoid lupus, a nonfatal form of the disease, which requires him to take a medication called hydroxychloroquine. And, according to Jackson, the drug causes vitiligo loss of pigmentation.

N.Y. skin expert Dr. Howard Sobel tells us, “It is possible for chloroquine to cause hypopigmentation, but whether it’s the cause of his problem is hard to tell you. The chloroquine binds to melanin, which is responsible for the pigment of our skin. If that happens, it’s possible to have a whitish area of skin.”

On wikipedia it states the use of Hydroxychloroquine with lupus:

"The adult starting dose is 400 milligrams one to two times daily, for several weeks or months, depending on the reaction. This may be reduced to 200 from 400 milligrams per day for maintenance. With systemic lupus, it is especially useful in relieving skin inflammation, hair loss, oral sores, fatigue and joint pain as well as preventing relapse."

Which is consistent with the symptoms of lupus Michael was trying to treat.



Treatment For Lupus - Prednisone

In his autopsy report it was stated that they found the drug Prednisone in his house.

Prednisone is one of the most common drugs used in the treatment of lupus. Lupus Canada says of the drug:

"In the chapter Treating Lupus With Medications, I talked about Prednisone as being the single most important factor in improving the outlook for lupus patients. It is a very powerful tool in the treatment of lupus, it is usually effective in bringing lupus under control and it saves lives."

Prednisone has side effects, some of which are:

"Swelling of the face, often referred to as “moon face” or “chipmunk cheeks”; some patients feel ugly and say that they do not recognize themselves in the mirror. Remember, these changes are reversible."
Weight gain; Prednisone may cause a great increase in appetite. Weight gain can be controlled by a low calorie diet, by exercise and by avoidance of salt. Avoid salty foods and do not add any salt.

Michael also spoke of having changed to a vegetarian diet in the early 80s, this could’ve also been due to his lupus. Michael’s doctors have said that he had been diagnosed with lupus in 1986:



His face became noticeably puffy and he looks like he has the so-called “moon face“, which seems in line with the idea of his being treated for the disease with the steroid Prednisone. He was also said to have had a lupus flare up in 2002 and again, his cheeks are puffy.



Other side effects:

-Stomach problems; to ease the burning, try taking prednisone with food. This problem may require anti-ulcer medication.
-Mood changes; sometimes the change is for the better. However, depression may be made worse by prednisone.
-Insomnia; patients may have difficulty sleeping at nights.
-Shakiness; patients may have feelings of being “hyper: or that “things are running fast inside my head”.
-Weakness of the thigh muscles; patients may have difficulty in climbing stairs, getting out of the bath or getting up from a chair or toilet seat.
-Increased risk of infections; patients may have more infections including some caused by germs that the body is normally resistant to.

In 2002 Michael filmed the 8 month documentary “Living With Michael Jackson” with Bashir; his ex-wife Lisa Marie has since said that watching that footage, “He was either too speedy or he was sedated. It wasn’t the Michael that I knew,” this could have been due to the Prednisone.

This drug was prescribed a month before his death and he had taken all the prescribed dosage; this is also the same period in time where it seems Dr Conrad Murray first began using propofol to induce sleep in Michael. As you can see one of the side effects of Prednisone is insomnia, so part of the problem with his sleep may have involved the use of this drug. His battle with insomnia is something that he seems to have been suffering with for many years, his wives Lisa Marie and Debbie Rowe have both spoken about it.

Lisa was on and off with him from 1993-2000, in her Oprah interview in 2010 she said:

Oprah: Was he having trouble sleeping then?
Lisa: He was like a little gnome. I used to tell him he was a gnome running around the room because it was hard for him to sleep. A lot of times I couldn’t sleep either if he wasn’t sleeping. I’d just hear him piddling. It was a bit endearing but then I didn’t mind it. But he did have a hard time sleeping, yes.

And Debbie Rowe who married him from 1996-1999 said back in a Star magazine scoop (she didn’t realize she was being recorded) in 1997:

Debbie: He’ll stay up until 4 am pacing, thinking. Sometimes he’ll come up to me in the middle of the night when I’m asleep and stick things in my nose or my ear and wake me up. Sometimes I wake up and I won’t hear him and I’ll be in a panic. When I realize he’s asleep, I go into his room and climb into bed with him because than we can sleep together.”
