Michael Jackson - You will be missed.
Michael Jackson was a gamer, he wanted me to come up to Neverland and talk to him about games. The first time I went up and after walking in the door, he handed me a black plastic trash bag and told me to put it on. I was like, "HUH?" He started putting his trash bag on. Then one of his staff walked in with a giant PILE of eggs. A bunch of his friends came in (wearing the requisite black trash bags) and we all went into the garden area and started a giant egg fight. I threw my first egg FULL FORCE (I have long arms), then the world went into slow motion, I thought, "Oh No!", as I saw the egg flying full speed towards his son's face, and I noticed they were filming everything for Michael's home video collection (so they'd know who did it!) What a great start to make his son cry. Luckily, it whizzed right by his ear missing him by millimeters. I then went into "Here, take this" as I performed the lamest egg throws you've ever seen. So everyone survived, and I was invited to stay.
There were always celebrities there, Marlon Brando was staying there for a while (this was when he was really ill and was there to escape the media), Brett Ratner (Director - Rush Hour / X-Men) was there just hanging out.
I was given complete free roam, and took advantage of it, I've played his arcade machines, been on all his rides, I even fired up his go-karts, and drove his bumper cars (while listening to Michael Jackson music turned up to 11.)
As I wandered around, I walked into his movie theater and watched him play with his kids, he was an amazing father to them. I watched him quietly from the shadows at the back, he had no idea I was there. They were watching the Three Stooges but had given up on that and instead were just having fun. Anytime anything turned serious, he'd fight it, one time his chef was cooking me something, and he walked in. He saw that the chef had turned the news on the TV, and he said to the chef, "Please turn that off, this is why people come here, to get away from all that." I guess the point is that he was always surrounded with the pressures from the real world, but was trying hard to provide an escape, not just for himself, but for everyone else too.
I hated that people would say negative stuff about him as they had never met him.
I was invited back a few times and always saw interesting things, like the road would be blocked as they were exercising an elephant, my wife came up and fed his bear. I made some dumb mistakes too, like he was totally into magic, so I showed him that leviation trick but got the angles wrong, he didn't say it was the most lame magic he'd ever seen, but you could tell he was thinking it, as then he started talking about David Blaine being a friend of his. Let's just say, I gave up on the magic.
Our discussions lead us to plan for him to release his next music album as a video game FIRST, then as an album. This would have introduced many new players to video games. He was incredibly interested in the idea, and we got quite far down that road, working on the story, mechanics etc. We were excited about the press potential, I remember saying to him, "Oprah never talks about video games", to which he replied, "Oprah is a friend of mine". This was a theme I learned, he had so many friends, and actually spent time with them all. It was really impressive.
So I feel lucky to have spent time with him, I think the music industry lost a major part of its history yesterday, I know his children will be devastated, and for people like me that spent time with him, that got to see the "real" guy, (outside of his celebrity) the world lost a really great person too.

OH, one other thing, I have another quick Michael Jackson story from the other side... I used to know the head of security for Wembley Stadium in the UK. He gave me one of those reflective security staff jackets to wear so I could go anywhere I wanted. So I went to see tons of famous acts (Madonna, David Bowie, Prince, everyone), and literally would stand at the side of the stage and watch the show. I did this with Michael Jackson, and it was the worst show ever! Why? Well everyone kept bloody fainting! "Mister!!! My girlfriend just fainted, help me save her, PLEASE!" I spent most of the concert carrying sweaty-crushed-passed-out women to the medical crews. I'd NEVER seen that many at any concert before. There are tons of great bands out there, but it's a whole new level when your fans can't remain conscious! He rocked.

Michael Jackson era un giocatore, e voleva che andassi a Neverland per parlare con lui di giochi. La prima volta che ci sono andato subito dopo essere entrato dalla porta, mi ha consegnato una busta di plastica nera della spazzatura e mi ha detto di metterla su. Ho pensato "Eh?". Ha iniziato mettendo su il suo sacchetto della spazzatura. Poi uno dei suoi collaboratori è entrato con una PILA enorme di uova. È arrivato un gruppo di suoi amici (indossando i sacchetti della spazzatura neri necessari) e siamo andati tutti in giardino e abbiamo iniziato una gigantesca lotta con le uova. Ho buttato il mio primo uovo con la massima forza (ho braccia lunghe) e in quel momento il mondo è andato in slow motion, ho pensato: "Oh No!", appena ho visto l'uovo volante andare a tutta velocità verso il volto di suo figlio, e ho notato che stavano filmando tutto per la raccolta di home video di Michael (così avrebbero saputo chi era stato!). Che ottimo inizio far piangere suo figlio. Per fortuna, l'uovo sfrecciò accanto al suo orecchio mancandolo per qualche millimetro. Allora sono entrato nel "Ecco, prendi questo", e ho eseguito i lanci di uova più deboli che abbiate mai visto. Così sono tutti sopravvissuti, e sono stato invitato a rimanere.
Ho trascorso un maledetto buon tempo nella sua sala giochi. C'erano sempre celebrità lì, Marlon Brando è stato lì per un po' (è successo quando era veramente malato ed era lì per sfuggire ai media), Brett Ratner (regista - Rush Hour / X-Men) è stato lì solo per passare il tempo.
Mi è stato dato completo libero accesso, e ne ho approfittato, ho giocato con i suoi videogiochi, sono stato su tutte le sue giostre, ho anche messo in moto i suoi go-kart, e guidato le sue macchine da autoscontro (ascoltando musica di Michael Jackson a volume 11.)
Nel mio girovagare, sono entrato nel suo cinema e l'ho visto giocare con i suoi figli, era un padre fantastico per loro. L'ho guardato in silenzio come un ombra alle spalle, non aveva idea che ero lì. Stavano guardando i Tre Marmittoni ma aveva rinunciato a questo e invece si stavano solo divertendo. Ogni volta che qualcosa si faceva seria, doveva combatterla, una volta il suo chef mi stava cucinando qualcosa, e lui entrò. Vide che il cuoco aveva acceso il notiziario alla TV, e disse al cuoco, "Per favore spegnilo, questo è il motivo per cui la gente viene qui, per allontanarsi da tutto questo". Credo che il punto era che è sempre stato circondato dalle pressioni del mondo reale, e allora stava cercando con forza di fornire una via di fuga, non solo a se stesso, ma anche a tutti gli altri.
Odiavo che la gente dicesse cose negative su di lui senza averlo mai incontrato.
Sono stato invitato di nuovo un paio di volte e ho sempre visto cose interessanti, come la strada bloccata perché stavano addestrando un elefante, mia moglie si avvicinò e diede da mangiare al suo orso. Ho fatto anche alcuni errori stupidi, perché lui era molto interessato alla magia, e così gli ho mostrato il trucco della levitazione, ma ho sbagliato l'angolazione, non ha detto che era la magia più debole che avesse mai visto, ma si capiva che lo stava pensando, così poi ha cominciato a parlare di David Blaine che era un suo amico. Diciamolo, ho rinunciato alla magia.
Le nostre chiacchierate ci portarono a pianificare di rilasciare il suo prossimo album prima come un videogioco, e poi come un album. Ciò avrebbe portato molti nuovi giocatori di videogiochi. Era incredibilmente interessato all'idea, e siamo andati abbastanza lontano su questa strada, lavorando sulla storia, la meccanica, ecc. Eravamo entusiasti dell'effetto sulla stampa, mi ricordo di avergli detto, "Oprah non parla mai di videogiochi", e lui ha risposto, "Oprah è una mia amica". Questo era un argomento che avevo imparato, aveva tanti amici, e davvero trascorreva del tempo con loro. Era davvero impressionante.
Mi sento quindi fortunato ad aver trascorso del tempo con lui, penso che l'industria della musica ha perso una parte importante della sua storia di ieri, so che i suoi figli saranno devastati, e per le persone come me che hanno passato del tempo con lui, che hanno avuto modo di vedere il "vero" ragazzo, (al di fuori della sua celebrità) anche il mondo ha perso davvero una grande persona.

OH, un'altra cosa, ho un'altra breve storia su Michael Jackson visto dall'altra parte... Sono solito conoscere il capo della sicurezza dello stadio di Wembley nel Regno Unito. Mi ha dato una di quelle giacche riflettenti del personale di sicurezza da indossare così che potessi andare ovunque volessi. Così sono andato a vedere tonnellate di personaggi famosi (Madonna, David Bowie, Prince, tutti), e significava letteralmente stare al lato del palco e guardare lo spettacolo. L'ho fatto con Michael Jackson, ed è stato il peggiore spettacolo possibile! Perché? Bene, tutti continuavano a svenire dannazione! "Signore!!! La mia ragazza è svenuta, aiutami a salvarla, PER FAVORE!" Ho trascorso la maggior parte del concerto a trasportare donne sudate-schiacciate-svenute al personale medico. Non ne avevo mai visti così tanti (di svenimenti, n.d.t.) in un qualsiasi concerto prima. Ci sono tonnellate di grandi band là fuori, ma è un livello completamente nuovo, quando i tuoi fan non ce la fanno a rimanere coscienti! Lui scuoteva.
