Donny Osmond says Michael Jackson No. 1 hit was written for him
Donny Osmond is known for his hit 1970s song “Puppy Love,” but his signature teen idol ballad could have been about a rat. In an interview with Huffington Post posted on Tuesday, Osmond revealed that the Michael Jackson classic, “Ben” was originally written for him, but that he was on tour and unable to record it in time for the soundtrack for the sequel to the horror film “Willard.”
While the 1972 song about a rat turned into a number one hit for 14-year-old Jackson -- even winning a Golden Globe for best song that year -- Osmond now says he has no regrets over passing over the soundtrack song more than four decades ago. “I was on tour and they had to finish the movie,” he said. “It wasn't meant to be... Fate's a funny thing.”
The 57-year-old former teen heartthrob also dished that he and Jackson would talk about the topic frequently when they were teenagers, joking about the silly subjects of their hit songs. “I will never forget, we stayed up to like two in the morning, laughing about the fact that I had a hit about a puppy and he had a hit about a rat,” he said.
Last fall, Rolling Stone unearthed a rare 1980 audio interview with Jackson, who revealed that it only took him one take to complete the vocals for his ode to a rat, which was recorded for the Motown label in 1972. “’Ben’ I did in one take,” the future King of Pop said. “I went right in and cut it, and I said, ‘Want to do another one?’ And the guy said ‘No no it was great.’ And I said ‘Was it?’” Turns out it was. In addition to the Golden Globe win, the song was nominated for an Academy Award.
Donny Osmond performs a long-awaited cover of “Ben” on his new (60th!) album, "Soundtrack of My Life" (due out Jan. 13), but he joked that back in the day, he was happy with his canine classic. “I'd rather sing about a puppy,” he said. “But after 40 some-odd years, I finally recorded the song that was written for me.”
Interestingly, Osmond also said that Michael Jackson once told him The Osmonds 1971 hit "One Bad Apple," was originally written for The Jackson Five. Sounds like some serious song switcheroos took place in the ‘70s.
