.Reviews From the Home Video Basket: Michael Jackson's 'This Is It' Documentary

As I've said in previous reviews, for those who missed them... I watch lots of movies (old and new) weekly, mostly at home, on cable TV, Netflix and Amazon primarily, usually as I'm working on S&A. Nut I rarely write about what I screen, if only because I don't have the time. But I'm now making a concerted effort to do so, and publish here. Consider them quickies.
I wasn't sure if I would ever see it, given my profound disapproval of Sony's obviously exploitative decision to produce and release the documentary so soon after Michael Jackson's death. Alas, my love for MJ's music trumped my disgust for Sony, and I acquiesced, and saw the film on Sunday afternoon.
It's difficult to review a film like this - what is essentially a videotaped concert; or rather, more like a pre-concert concert, assembled from rehearsals that occurred from April through June 2009, for a tour scheduled for that summer. This isn't some scripted reality TV-like program; there aren't any moments of conflict or drama between members of the house; there are no scenes of salacity; there are no individual confessionals; there's no foul language.
For roughly 2 hours, it's Michael Jackson - mostly a very austere Michael - prepping rather rigorously for a concert tour that, due to his abrupt death, never came to pass; and how unfortunate, because the audiences who would have been lucky enough to be present for the live performances, would most certainly have been thoroughly entertained, and even enriched by the experience.
If there's one thing I took away from watching "This Is It," it's that, quite a lot of work goes into producing a concert fit for a king - the King of Pop, that is. I was continuously impressed by the effort (and likely money) that apparently went into the preparation for the tour. There's the old joke about the guy who asks pianist Arthur Rubinstein how to get to Carnegie Hall; and Rubinstein replies, "Practice, practice, practice." And that's exactly what they do here! The dancers, the musicians, the crew behind the pyrotechnics, and of course, MJ himself, who, throughout the entire documentary, is so self-assured and in full control of almost every aspect of the production, never hesitating to express his dissatisfaction (as well as praise) when necessary - traits that seem so counter to the almost fragile, effete Michael Jackson that the media often portrays. The man knows his music, his dance moves, what he wants and demands perfection - of himself, first and foremost, and as well as those around him - and he clearly has the respect of each and every person involved in every piece of the rather elaborate puzzle.
Clearly, he wants to thrill his fans who've paid decent sums of money to see him perform live, and ensure that they are satisfied and even overwhelmed once the show is over, and one can only admire him for that. There's absolutely no room for mediocrity here.
Your appreciation for the film will likely depend on your appreciation for the man at the center of it - because it's really all about him. It seems useless to talk about it mechanically, or as a work of film art - the editing, the cinematography, the story, the direction, the message underlying it all, etc. Don't bother trying to analyze those individual particulars. Just sit back, behold a master at work, and bask in it all. Because it works. It gets the job done. You, the audience, essentially are made privy to the kind of footage you likely would never get to see under most similar circumstances. You get to witness how much work goes into the preparation for a concert of this magnitude, as each piece is imagined and realized - no frills, no adornments. You get to see the magic that happens behind the curtain - in lieu of what you would have seen live and on stage, but now never will. In a way, it's like buying a DVD that comprises solely of extra, behind the scenes features, without the completed film.
My only gripe (and it's a minor one) is that it could have been about 15 minutes shorter. Even in the case of an electrifying performer like Michael Jackson, watching him practice and prepare repeatedly, eventually starts to feel monotonous, as my mind wandered a bit, during the last act.
Regardless, I think any fan of MJ's will appreciate what "This Is It" offers - a glimpse of a Michael that I don't think we ever really got to know, and the final steps of a genius, fully dedicated to his craft, as well as the audiences that still love and support him.
It's on DVD, though not streaming on Netflix.

RECENSIONE DELLA HOME VIDEO BASKET : IL DOCUMENTARIO " THIS IS IT " DI MICHAEL JACKSON
Come ho già detto in articoli precedenti, per chi li non li ha visti ... guardo molti film (vecchi e nuovi) alla settimana, per lo più a casa, in tv via cavo, su Netflix e Amazon in primo luogo, di solito mentre lavoro su S & A . Raramente scrivo di quello che vedo, se non altro perché non ho il tempo. Ma ora sto facendo uno sforzo per farlo, e pubblicarlo qui. Alla svelta.
Non ero sicuro che l'avrei mai visto, data la mia profonda disapprovazione ovviamente per l'idea, dello sfruttamento di Sony di produrre e pubblicare il documentario così presto dopo la morte di Michael Jackson. Ahimè, il mio amore per la musica di MJ ha sconfitto il mio disgusto per la Sony, ho acconsentito, e ho visto il film domenica pomeriggio.
E 'difficile recensire un film come questo - che è essenzialmente un concerto videoregistrato; o meglio, più simile a un concerto pre-concerto, assemblato da prove avvenute da aprile a giugno 2009 per il tour in programma per l'estate. Questo non è un programma televisivo, come un reality; non ci sono i momenti di conflitto o di dramma tra i membri della casa; non ci sono scene salaci; non ci sono confessionali; non c'è un linguaggio volgare.
Per circa due ore, è Michael Jackson - per lo più un Michael molto austero - durante la preparazione piuttosto rigorosa per un tour di concerti che, a causa della sua improvvisa morte, non è mai avvenuto; ed è un peccato, perché il pubblico che avrebbe avuto la fortuna di essere presente alle esibizioni dal vivo, certamente sarebbe stato scrupolosamente e accuratamente intrattenuto, e si sarebbe anche arricchito dell'esperienza.
Se c'è una cosa che ho colto dal vedere "This Is It," è che, relativamente a un bel po 'di lavoro nel produrre un concerto a misura di un re, è il Re del Pop, . Sono stato continuamente colpito dallo sforzo (e probabilmente dal denaro) che a quanto pare è stato usato per preparare il tour. C'è la vecchia barzelletta del tizio che chiede al pianista Arthur Rubinstein come arrivare alla Carnegie Hall; e Rubinstein risponde: "Pratica, pratica, pratica." E questo è esattamente quello che viene fatto qui! I ballerini, i musicisti, la squadra dietro i fuochi d'artificio, e, naturalmente, MJ stesso, che, in tutto il documentario, è così sicuro di sé e nel pieno controllo di pressoché tutti gli aspetti della produzione, non esitando a esprimere la sua insoddisfazione (così come le lodi) quando necessario - tratto che sembra così in contrasto con il quasi fragile, effeminato Michael Jackson che i media spesso ritraggono. L'uomo conosce la sua musica, i suoi passi di danza, quello che vuole ed esige la perfezione - da se stesso, in primo luogo, così come da quelli intorno a lui - e lui ha chiaramente il rispetto di ogni persona coinvolta in ogni pezzo di un puzzle piuttosto elaborato.
Chiaramente, vuole emozionare i suoi fan che avrebbero pagato discrete somme di denaro per vederlo esibirsi dal vivo, e assicurarsi che fossero soddisfatti ed è addirittura sopraffatto quando lo spettacolo finisce, e si può solo ammirare per questo. Non c'è assolutamente spazio per la mediocrità qui.
L'apprezzamento per il film probabilmente dipende dall'apprezzamento per l'uomo che ne è al centro - perché è davvero tutto su di lui. Sembra inutile parlarne meccanicamente, o come di un'opera d'arte cinematografica - il montaggio, la fotografia, la storia, la regia, il messaggio alla base di tutto, etc. Non perdete tempo cercando di analizzare i singoli elementi. Basta sedersi, ecco un maestro al lavoro, e goderselo tutto. Perché funziona. Si vede il lavoro. Voi, il pubblico, in sostanza vedete un filmato che probabilmente non avreste mai visto in simili circostanze . Siete testimoni di quanto lavoro serve in preparazione di un concerto di questa portata, in quanto ogni pezzo è immaginato e realizzato - senza fronzoli, senza ornamenti. Vedete la magia che accade dietro le quinte - invece di quello che avreste visto dal vivo e sul palco, ma ora non lo vedrete mai. In un certo senso, è come l'acquisto di un DVD che comprende esclusivamente gli extra, il dietro le quinte, senza il film completo.
Il mio unico appunto (ed è minore) è che avrebbe potuto essere di un 15 minuti più breve. Anche nel caso di un artista elettrizzante come Michael Jackson, guardarlo allenarsi e provare più volte, alla fine comincia a sembrare monotono, e la mia mente vagava un po ', durante l'ultimo atto.
Indipendentemente da ciò, credo che tutti i fan di MJ apprezzeranno ciò che "This Is It" offre - un assaggio di un Michael che non credo abbiamo mai veramente avuto modo di conoscere, e le fasi finali di un genio, interamente dedicato alla sua arte, così come al pubblico che ancora lo ama e lo sostiene.
E' in DVD, anche se non in streaming su Netflix.. -

Vero.. in parte.. sbaglio o una delle motivazioni per le riprese, era realizzare una sorta di making da vendere in DVD?..
Va bene Va bene.. Michael registrava tutto anche per riguardarsi da casa.. ma...
Va beh, con il senno del poi e invece per noi.. di vederlo esibirsi, anche per 24 ore.. al giorno.. non ci stancheremo.. mai.. !
E sottovaluta completamente l'aspetto emotivo legato a questo film e che tutt'ora.. nonostante i credo i ma e i se.. mi crea una certa inquietudine.. tant'è che l'ho visto si e no, forse 3 volte.. con una sorta di vago magone addosso abbastanza forte.. -

idem! tutto il materiale video/ cartaceo/musicale che ho è abbastanza ben conservato, nonostante l'uso che ne ho fatto... ma il DVD di TII è praticamente nuovo..
