Making Michael Jackson’s Bertone Lancia Stratos Zero For Moonwalker
Have you ever wondered what was the name of the cool car that Michael Jackson morphized into in the classic 1988 film Moonwalker?
It’s called a Lancia Stratos Zero, an Italian sport and racing car, made by automaker Lancia. The Lancia Stratos Zero was first shown to the public in 1970, but shares little but the name and mid-engined layout with the Stratos HF version. The futuristic bodywork was designed by Marecello Gandini, head designer at Bertone, and featured a 1.6 L Lancia Fulvia V4 engine. The wedge-shaped body has a distinctive orange finish and is unusually short. The 1970 Zero replica appears in Moonwalker.
In the film, Michael and his friend Katie accidentally discover the lair of drug lord Frankie Lideo aka “Mr. Big” who wants to spread his drugs all over the world by addicting children. Mr Big loves spiders and after Katie spies one crawling nearby, she screams, causing the criminals to discover their unwanted presence. The chase is on from there, with Michael being shot at in front of his store. Michael has a “lucky star” and uses it to escape the gunfire. When Mr. Big realizes that Michael has escaped, he orders his henchmen to track him down with dogs. Michael, running for his life, is eventually cornered in an alley. He uses his lucky star to turn into a sports car to escape Mr. Big and his henchmen once again.
Michael chose the Stratos Zero because of the futuristic design. He contacted Bertone to get permission to use one in the film, but at that time the company was not willing to sell their famous prototype, not even to Michael Jackson. It was decided to make an exact mold of the original prototype and build a copy of the bodywork. The body was produced in the same silver as the original prototype, but with no frame, seats or anything else. Michael asked British car artist Andy Saunders to complete the vehicle, which he did it using the inside of a Fiat X / 19 and a Porsche engine. The replica was very faithful, but using chrome hubcaps and 4 tailpipes to make it more striking in the film.
After filming, the replica apparently became the property of Michael. Since his death, the car has been on display in MJ exhibitions with his costumes and other paraphernalia.
In 2003. while looking for a project, Andy Saunders, found one of the Lancia body molds made for the Moonwalker film. Though he didn’t know it at the time when he made the first car, Saunders says, “when the film was being made, Michael had a film prop company make not one, but three body shells to be used in the film to metamorphis from the Zero into Michael.” He used it to build a new replica of the Lancia Stratos Zero, which differed from Michael’s version. The car was painted orange, with black on the fenders and hood instead of the original silver.
his replica was sold to a gentleman from Arizona, who in turn, months later, sold it on Ebay for $100,000 in 2009.
Although it is unclear if the Bertone company elected to allow Michael to use the Lancia’s copyright design in lieu of the actual vehicle, the company is acknowledged in the DVD movie credits.
