What Michael Jackson And Gandhi Have In Common
It’s not often you can combine Michael Jackson with Gandhi. But in this instance you can.
On Nov. 30, 1982, Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” was released by Epic Records. That same day in New Delhi, “Gandhi” had its world premiere.
“Thriller” didn’t hit #1 until February 1983, but remained in Billboard’s Top 10 for a full year. It also spent more time in the #1 spot — 37 weeks — than any other album ever.

“Gandhi” was equally monumental, sweeping the 1983 Oscars, winning eight awards, including Best Actor for Ben Kingsley. It also took Best Picture, Best Screenplay and earned Richard Attenborough an Oscar for Best Director.
For good measure, Mark Twain (real name Samuel Langhorne Clemens) was born in 1835 — some said as Halley’s Comet passed — Winston Churchill was born in 1874 and Oscar Wilde died in 1900 at the age of 46.
