Enemy from the West: Jacksonmania in the USSR

This article from the Dangerous Zone fanzine (Issue 10) takes us back to the anti-Western propaganda of the Soviet Union which also covered Michael Jackson, despite his positive image. The article is outstanding because it demonstrates how rapidly Michael’s art spread and influenced the youth, exactly what the Soviet Russia government feared the most. The period described in the article covers the beginning of the 80-ies, times when despite the “iron curtain”, Jackson-mania had already reached the USSR. There’s an interesting blog, Michael Jackson in the USSR, which shows lots of examples of how Michael’s style was copied by the Soviet performers, while the Soviet press treated him with contempt, calling him “a pop marionette” and an instrument used to distract the Western youngsters from important global problems.

Eras have changed, the country exists no more, ideologies collapsed, the Soviet propaganda sounds amusing today, but Jackson’s art keeps influencing young people who have embraced it for two generations.

“WHY HAVE YOU COME, ENEMY FROM THE WEST?..”
Have you ever considered why Michael Jackson became known in Russia only after the reformation period (perestroika)? It’s clear that the Communism-building country was extremely picky while selecting performers for the Soviet listeners; ask your parents, and they will give you names which have been long forgotten: Robertino Loretti, Karel Gott, Biser Kirov, a sonorous scattering of Italian names dating back to the San Remo festival, and several truly important figures, such as Joe Dassin, Mireille Mathieu, Demis Russos and ABBA. Demands towards foreign performers included, first of all, loyalty to the Soviet order, as well as an extremely decent behavior and appearance.
But in the beginning of the eighties practically the whole world, including half-wild New Zealand tribes, was crazy about flawlessly well-mannered, good-looking youngsters who were in no way connected to any politics, known as The Jacksons, and only the Soviet Union never heard anything of them thanks to the Iron Curtain. We would like to understand the logic of it, so we carried out a sort of an investigation and made a discovery which we would like to share with the readers. This is what we have found.

One day, one of the authors of this article (Svetlana Samoilova) got hold of a book published in 1985, about the “undermining activities against the socialistic countries”. Here’s a quote, “Hostile propaganda directed by the Western radio stations against us, against the Soviet country, sees its chance in the admiration expressed by our young men and women regarding contemporary dance rhythms and pop music.” God save us! Instead of learning the works of Marx and Lenin by heart, the irresponsible youngsters tend to go to some stupid dance clubs where they are subjected to foul effect of the “rotting West”.
What can be done about this? (One of the two main questions in the Soviet dialectics, “Who’s to blame?” and “What can be done?” asked by Herzen and Chernyshevsky respectively, who famously woke up many people with these questions, which led to a number of various misfortunes, including the above-mentioned Iron Curtain with its perfect soundproof texture.
This is what happens if you don’t let people sleep as much as they want to!)
But, of course, unsheathe your swords and ride hard, save the young generation “sacrificed to a multibillion business”, i.e. the showbiz. This rescue mission, which successfully failed later (hurrah to that!), lay in painstaking trashing of the Western performers who, judging by that nice book, were drunkards and drug addicts, all of them.

One could agree that it wasn’t right to join their club following your idol and start doing whatever they did, but a true talent cannot be drowned in a bottle or blown with the wind, and this was proved by Eric Clapton, Freddie Mercury and many others. Nevertheless, Michael has never been caught doing anything of the kind. (“I take some small pride in thinking that I’ve come out pretty well, all things considered. I myself have never tried drugs — no marijuana, no cocaine, nothing. I mean, I haven’t even tried these things…I believe performers should try to be strong as an example to their audiences.” Michael Jackson, “Moonwalk”)

As Barry Kleinman, Dangerous Tour publisher in Great Britain, said, “He is a gentleman. There are many performers in showbiz who cannot be called gentlemen.” Still, even this gentleman did not manage to please the Soviet Union countries. So how did this noble creature get into the crowd of barely standing depraved individuals?

You may not believe it, but he became part of this wonderful company because of his “political indifference” and “horrors”. It should be noted that there was only one American performer popular in the Soviet Union – singer and actor Dean Reed who admired the ideas of socialism and tried to promote them in the USA, but he also demonstrated lack of responsibility from time to time by performing some Beatles songs. As for horrors, of course, Gogol could write in his “Viy” whatever he wanted, but then the Soviet film directors would have to make a movie based on it without fear for the young minds…

So here’s how it goes: “The story of the new American pop music superstar Michael Jackson: they say that his image was calculated with the help of a computer. The computer had a program which considered all the qualities and features necessary to conquer the musical market of the eighties. The machine created an output model, according to which the wheeler-dealers of show-business (socialistic slang: a wheeler-dealer is someone who governs and owns something) chose a singer who had been previously unknown (!!!) to anyone. Today, a cute-looking young man with a high “feminine” voice, a lovely smile (thanks for the compliment, guys) and a slender body wiggling non-stop during his performances, never leaves the TV screens, newspapers and magazine covers.
His concert tours are supported by such noisy advertising campaigns and craze, as if an extra-terrestrial arrived to Earth (oh yeah, those were the good old days! Why won’t we restore the old traditions?). Youngsters participate in numerous TV contests for “the best Michael impersonator”. The lucky ones who give their best in recreating grimaces and jumps of their idol will get a free trip to Hollywood.
Plastic surgery clinics welcome those who desire to look just like their idol, they promise to make you a nose and eyes “absolutely like Michael’s”. The Jacksonmania virus maintains a steady pace, infecting thousands of girls and young men, helps earning big money for those who launched it and fulfills the supertask: using the same template, start a mass production of lookalike jacksons senselessly kicking their legs and praising capitalism (where, when?!).”

Yes, the National Enquirer will never get close to that. This is your answer: just like any artificially created organism living in complete isolation, the Soviet reality was extremely afraid of viruses. The Jacksonmania virus, indeed, was powerful and clear, like the Beatlemania before it, which also faced active struggle against it.
The fact that Michael never demonstrated lascivious behavior was even worse, because his decency could provide a reason to doubt the complete indecency of other capitalists. Any ideology, be it politics or religion, bears no competition. The ideas propagated by Michael, due to their grandeur, sincerity and truth, simple as breathing, could “steal our great achievements, our great works from us”.

However, at the time that book was published, We Are The World had not been written and sung yet, Man In The Mirror and Heal The World did not exist, and They Don’t Care About Us (down with political indifference!) was still far away, but these songs could hardly change anything even if they existed back then.

You could ask why we took the time to tell you all this. Thank God, the Iron Curtain has already been corroded and fallen apart, and we can hear every sound, every melody and every name from anywhere. Well, we just wanted to talk about what was going on when some of us hadn’t even been born yet. It seems to us that this should never be forgotten. And we also love Stranger In Moscow – it evoked many different thoughts…

Nemico proveniente dall'Ovest: Jacksonmania in URSS

Questo articolo della Dangerous Zone fanzine ( Numero 10 ) ci riporta alla propaganda anti-occidentale dell'Unione Sovietica che includeva anche Michael Jackson, nonostante la sua immagine positiva. L'articolo è eccezionale perché dimostra quanto rapidamente la diffusione dell'arte di Michael ha influenzato i giovani, esattamente ciò che il governo della Russia sovietica temeva di più. Il periodo descritto in questo articolo riguarda l'inizio degli anni '80, momenti in cui, nonostante la "Cortina di ferro", la Jacksonmania aveva già raggiunto l'URSS. C'è un blog interessante, 'Michael Jackson in URSS', che mostra un sacco di esempi di come lo stile di Michael fu copiato dagli artisti sovietici, mentre la stampa sovietica lo trattò con disprezzo, definendolo "una marionetta pop" e uno strumento utilizzato per distrarre i giovani occidentali da importanti problemi globali.

I tempi sono cambiati, il paese non esiste più, le ideologie sono crollate, la propaganda sovietica suona divertente oggi, ma l'arte di Jackson continua a influenzare i giovani che l'hanno abbracciata per due generazioni.

Perché sei venuto, NEMICO DALL'OVEST? ..

Avete mai pensato del perché Michael Jackson divenne noto in Russia solo dopo il periodo della Riforma (perestroika)? E' chiaro che il paese comunista in costruzione era estremamente esigente mentre selezionava gli interpreti per gli ascoltatori sovietici; chiedete ai vostri genitori, loro vi diranno i nomi che sono stati a lungo dimenticati: Robertino Loretti, Karel Gott, Biser Kirov, una dispersione sonora di nomi italiani risalenti al festival di San Remo e diversi personaggi veramente importanti, come Joe Dassin, Mireille Mathieu, Demis Russos e ABBA. Le richieste verso gli artisti stranieri erano, innanzitutto, di fedeltà all'ordine sovietico, così come un comportamento e un aspetto estremamente dignitoso.
Ma all'inizio degli anni Ottanta, praticamente tutto il mondo, tra cui le tribù semi-selvagge della Nuova Zelanda, andava pazza per dei giovani ben educati e di bell'aspetto che non erano in alcun modo collegati a qualsiasi politica, noti come 'The Jacksons'; solo l'Unione Sovietica non aveva mai sentito parlare di loro grazie alla cortina di ferro. Volevamo capire la logica, quindi abbiamo effettuato una sorta di indagine e fatto una scoperta che vorremmo condividere con i lettori. Questo è ciò che abbiamo trovato.

Un giorno, uno degli auori di questo articolo (Svetlana Samoilova) è entrata in possesso di un libro pubblicato nel 1985, sulle " attività di sovversione contro i paesi socialisti". Ecco una citazione: "la propaganda ostile da parte di stazioni radio occidentali contro di noi, contro il paese sovietico, vede la sua opportunità nell'ammirazione espressa dai nostri giovani uomini e donne in materia di ritmi di danza contemporanea e musica pop." Dio ci salvi! Invece di imparare le opere di Marx e di Lenin a memoria, i giovani irresponsabili tendono ad andare in qualche stupida discoteca dove sono sottoposti al ripugnante effetto del "marcio Ovest".
Cosa si può fare in proposito?. ( Una delle due questioni principali nella dialettica sovietica è "di chi è la colpa?" e "cosa si può fare?". Chiesto da Herzen e Chernyshevsky, rispettivamente, hanno messo in allerta molte persone con queste domande che hanno portato ad una serie di varie sventure, tra cui la citata Cortina di ferro con la sua perfetta consistenza insonorizzata. Questo è ciò che accade se non si lascia che la gente dorma come vogliono loro!)

Ma, naturalmente, sfoderare le spade salva la giovane generazione "sacrificata per un business multimiliardario", cioè il mondo dello spettacolo. Questa missione di salvataggio, che non è riuscita con successo in seguito (evviva!), consisteva nel distruggere minuziosamente gli artisti occidentali che, a giudicare da quel bel libro, erano ubriachi e tossicodipendenti, tutti..

Si potrebbe convenire che non era giusto unirsi ai loro club per seguire il proprio idolo e iniziare a fare qualunque cosa facessero, ma un vero talento non può essere annegato in una bottiglia o spazzato via, e questo è stato dimostrato da Eric Clapton, Freddie Mercury e molti altri. Tuttavia, Michael non è mai stato sorpreso a fare una cosa del genere. ("Mi prendo qualche piccola soddisfazione nel pensare che sono cresciuto abbastanza bene, tutto sommato. No ho mai provato droghe — no marijuana, no cocaina, niente.Voglio dire, non ho nemmeno provato queste cose ... Penso che gli artisti dovrebbero cercare di essere forti e fare da esempio per il loro pubblico: "Michael Jackson," Moonwalk ")

Come Barry Kleinman, editore del Dangerous Tour in Gran Bretagna, ha detto, "è un gentiluomo. Ci sono molti artisti nel mondo dello spettacolo, che non possono essere chiamati signori." Eppure, neanche questo gentiluomo riuscì a compiacere i paesi dell'Unione Sovietica. E allora, come ha fatto questa nobile creatura a rimanere in piedi in mezzo ad una folla di individui depravati?.

Si può non credere, ma lui è diventato parte di questa meravigliosa comitiva a causa della sua "indifferenza politica" e "orrori". Va notato che c'era solo un interprete americano popolare in Unione Sovietica, il cantante e attore Dean Reed che ammirava le idee del socialismo e cercò di promuoverli negli Stati Uniti, ma ha anche dimostrato la mancanza di responsabilità di volta in volta eseguendo alcune canzoni dei Beatles. Per quanto riguarda gli orrori, naturalmente, Gogol poteva scrivere nel suo "Viy" quello che voleva, ma poi i registi sovietici avrebbero dovuto fare un film basato su di esso senza timore per le giovani menti ...

Quindi, ecco come va: "La storia della nuova superstar della musica pop americana Michael Jackson: si dice che la sua immagine è stata studiata con l'ausilio di un computer. Il computer aveva un programma che considerava tutte le qualità e le caratteristiche necessarie per conquistare il mercato musicale degli anni ottanta. La macchina ha creato un modello di produzione, in base al quale i faccendieri dello show-business (slang socialista: un faccendiere è qualcuno che governa e possiede qualcosa) hanno scelto un cantante che era precedentemente sconosciuto (!!!) a chiunque. Oggi, un bel giovane uomo con un tono di voce "femminile", un bel sorriso (grazie per il complimento, ragazzi) e un corpo snello che si muove senza sosta durante le sue performance, è sempre presente sugli schermi televisivi, giornali e copertine di riviste.
I suoi concerti sono supportati da tale rumorosità nelle campagne pubblicitarie, come se un extraterrestre fosse arrivato sulla Terra (oh yeah, quelli erano i bei vecchi tempi! Perché non possiamo ripristinare le vecchie tradizioni?). I giovani partecipano a numerosi concorsi televisivi per "il miglior sosia di Michael". I fortunati che danno il loro meglio nel ricreare le mosse e i salti del loro idolo avranno un viaggio gratis a Hollywood.
Le cliniche di chirurgia plastica, che accolgono coloro che desiderano assomigliare al loro idolo, promettono di ricreare il naso e gli occhi "assolutamente come Michael". Il virus della Jacksonmania mantiene un ritmo costante, infettando migliaia di ragazze e ragazzi, aiuta a guadagnare un sacco di soldi per coloro che l'hanno messo in moto e soddisfa l'intento: utilizzando lo stesso modello, avviare una scriteriata produzione di massa di sosia di Jackson lodando il capitalismo (dove, quando ?!)

Sì, il National Enquirer non potrà mai avvicinarsi a una cosa del genere. Questa è la tua risposta: come qualsiasi organismo creato artificialmente che vive in completo isolamento, la realtà sovietica aveva paura dei virus. Il virus Jacksonmania, infatti, era potente e chiaro, come la Beatlemania prima, che anche affrontò una lotta attiva contro di essa..
Il fatto che Michael non avesse mai dimostrato un comportamento lascivo era anche peggio, perché la sua decenza poteva fornire un motivo per dubitare della completa indecenza di altri capitalisti. Ogni ideologia, sia essa politica o religiosa, non ha alcuna concorrenza. Le idee propagate da Michael, a causa della loro grandezza, sincerità e verità, così semplici come respirare, potrebbero "rubare le nostre grandi conquiste e le grandi opere fatte da noi".

Tuttavia, nel momento in cui libro è stato pubblicato, 'We Are The World' non era ancora stata scritta e cantata, 'Man In The Mirror' e 'Heal The World' non esistevano e 'They Don’t Care About Us' (giù con l'indifferenza politica!) era ancora lontana, ma queste canzoni difficilmente avrebbero cambiato qualcosa anche se ci fossero state allora.

Vi chiederete perché abbiamo preso del tempo per dirvi tutto questo. Grazie a Dio, la Cortina di ferro si è corrosa e andata in pezzi, e siamo in grado di sentire ogni suono, ogni melodia di ogni nome e da qualsiasi luogo. Beh, volevamo solo parlare di quello che succedeva quando alcuni di noi non erano ancora nati. Siamo dell'idea che questo non dovrebbe mai essere dimenticato. E anche noi amiamo 'Stranger In Moscow' - evoca tanti pensieri diversi ...
