Upcoming ‘In The Studio With MJ’ seminar to feature special segment on Neverland following announcement it will be sold

The Estate of Michael Jackson announced this week that fans should expect to soon begin seeing reports that California-based investment firm Colony Capital intends on selling the King of Pop’s almost-3000-acre Neverland Valley Ranch.
Brad Sundberg, best known for this work as technical director on many of Jackson’s iconic albums, and now for his In The Studio With MJ studio seminars, played an important role in installing many of the innovative sound systems throughout the ranch – including in Jackson’s bedroom, on his train, zoo and even his amusement park.
In the lead up to his next In The Studio With MJ seminar, which takes place in Orlando on September 6 and features fellow Jackson-collaborator Brad Buxer, Sundberg has reflected on his experiences working with Jackson at Neverland. His story, originally posted on his Facebook page, is detailed in full below:
It would be hard to estimate how many times I had been to the ranch. That’s what my girls called it. “Dad’s going to Michael’s ranch tomorrow, so he’ll be home late.” For fifteen years I had periodically driven the winding roads from my house just a few miles from the Rose Bowl across the 118 to the 101, through Santa Barbara then up the mountain to Los Olivos. It was almost exactly two and one half hours each way, if traffic was kind.
The funny thing about driving to the ranch was that I never got tired of it. There was always a bit of excitement going on in my head, like when I was young and going to an amusement park or the beach. Yes, it was work, but it was more than just work. We were building a place that was magical, and it made people happy.
I remember my first time at the ranch, likely in 1988. Michael had purchased it and brought a real estate book about it (it’s former name was Sycamore Valley Ranch) to the studio to show us pictures of it. He quietly pulled me aside to ask if I would install some studio monitors in his bedroom, and the next thing I knew I was driving to Neverland for the first time.
When you arrived at Neverland, the first thing you saw was the security gate, and the buzzer. Even though I have driven through that gate countless times, and the guards knew me and my big green Chevy Tahoe, I never had the freedom to enter the property if
my name was not on the pass list. Once they found your name, the giant wooden gate would open, and you would drive to the guard shack just on the other side.
Security was always professional and friendly, but never casual. I was asked the same questions almost every visit, and asked to sign in.
“Do you have a camera?”
“No.”
“Do you know where you are going?”
“Yes.”
Having been cleared, you would be allowed to proceed.
The drive from the first gate to the second gate was perhaps the better part of a mile. There were no lawns or flowers, and the hills were usually dry and dusty with bushy shrubs and lizards. You would never think it was the driveway of a global celebrity.
Before too long you would see the “Boy On The Moon” logo welcoming guests from a sign on the side of the road. Finally you would pass over that last hill and start to round the corner. Whether by chance or design, I always liked this little buildup of waiting to see the manicured lawns and gardens. It was like a long, slow introduction to a great song or movie. You would start getting glimpses of lush green grass and white fences.
As you drove, more things would come into view: the lake, giant oak trees protecting a huge house, guest houses, the train tracks and a train station, statues, and far off in the distance, there were more buildings, and of course the amusement park and zoo.
Even though I had crested that hill perhaps 250 times, I still got that little twinge of excitement every single time. It would be impossible not to.
As you would drive down the last hill leading to the ornate gate, you would see a huge parking lot for buses and guests to leave their cars. This was all part of the drama of visiting Neverland. You didn’t get the whole show at once, it was delivered in stages.
First you would leave your car and take a short walk through the ornate gate. At least that’s what we called it, the “Ornate Gate.”
Neverland wasn’t really set up for a lot of traffic, as the primary roads are barely wide enough for two cars to pass each other without driving on the grass. Also, most guests (and Michael) drove customized golf carts on the ranch, so it was safer to keep as many guest cars and trucks in this lot as possible.
Michael loved to create build-up and drama, and it started with the arrival of the guest at this gate. Guests would leave their cars and be greeted by a uniformed ranch employee, and escorted onto a private amusement park train. This was a great way for them to enter into Michael’s world.
He understood how to tell a story and how to set a stage, and it all started at this gate.
There really was no place on earth like Neverland, and it will never be the same because its creator is gone. Still, it will always be fully alive in my memory.
I recently read that the ranch will be put up for sale. I guess I have mixed feelings about that, but there is no Neverland without Michael, so I suppose this makes the most sense. Still, I would like to try to tell you what Neverland what like, from the music, to the rides, to the zoo. And I can’t think of a better guy to share some stories with me than Brad Buxer.

PROSSIMO SEMINARIO "IN STUDIO CON MJ" TRATTERÀ ANCHE DELLA VENDITA DI NEVERLAND

L'Estate di Michael Jackson ha annunciato questa settimana che i fan purtroppo ben presto dovranno aspettarsi di leggere notizie, sul fatto che un impresa di investimento della California, la Colony Capital, intende vendere il Neverland Valley Ranch, del Re del Pop.
Brad Sundberg, meglio conosciuto nell'ambiente come direttore tecnico per molti degli album di Jackson, e autore del seminario viandante 'In Studio Con MJ', ha avuto un ruolo molto importante nell'installazione dei sistemi audio che si trovano nel ranch, compresa la camera da letto di Jackson, sul treno, lo zoo e anche nel parco divertimenti.

Sarebbe difficile fare una stima, di quante volte sono stato al ranch. Con molta calma mi prese da parte per chiedermi se potevo istallare dei monitor nella sua camera da letto, e poco dopo stavo guidando verso Neverland, per la prima volta.
Quando arrivi a Neverland, la prima cosa che vedi è il cancello di sicurezza, e il campanello. Anche se ho attraversato quel cancello innumerevoli volte, e le guardie conoscevano benissimo me e la mia Chevy Tahoe, non ho mai avuto la libertà di entrare liberamente nella proprietà, se il mio nome non compariva preventivamente sulla lista degli ospiti. Non appena le guardie trovavano il mio nome, si apriva l'enorme cancello, in modo da potersi fermare davanti alla guardiola subito dopo l'entrata sulla destra..
La sicurezza era sempre professionale e cordiale, ma mai casuale. Ogni volta mi facevano le stesse domande, per poi farmi firmare.
"Ha una macchina fotografica?"
"No."
"Sa dove deve andare?"
"Sì".
E solo dopo aver risposto potevo procedere..
Fra il primo e il secondo cancello c'era si e no un miglio di strada. Non c'erano prati o fiori, e le colline erano di solito secche e polverose con arbusti folti e parecchie lucertole in giro. Tutto poteva apprire meno che il vialetto di ingresso della casa di una celebrità mondiale.
Una volta passato il logo del "Ragazzo Sulla Luna" che accoglieva gli ospiti indicando la direzione, c'era da aggirare un altra collinetta. Non so se per una ragione precisa o meno, ma ho sempre amato molto quel tratto di strada, rappresentava l'attesa prima di poter vedere i prati curati e i giardini. Era come una lunga lenta intro di una grande canzone o di un film. Nel mentre si potevano scorgere tratti di erba lussureggante o steccati bianchi.
Man mano, andando avanti: il lago, i giganteschi alberi di quercia , alcune casette secondarie i binari del treno e una stazione ferroviaria, le statue, e molto in lontananza, altri edifici, e, naturalmente, il parco di divertimenti e lo zoo.
Anche se avevo fatto quel tratto almeno 250 volte, avvertivo sempre una sorta di eccitazione ogni singola volta. Sarebbe stato impossibile non averla.
Così aggiravo l'ultima collina sino al cancello dorato, dal quale si poteva scorgere un enorme piazzale per gli autobus o le auto degli ospiti. Questo era il bello di Neverland. Non ti si palesava l'intera magnificenza tutta insieme, era un pò come se ti venisse donata a tappe.
Prima si doveva parcheggiare l'auto e fare una breve passeggiata superando il cancello dorato, o almeno così l'abbiamo sempre chiamato.
Neverland non è indubbiamente un posto adatto al grande traffico, le strade principali hanno giusto la larghezza necessaria a far si che due auto si incrocino senza dover finire sull'erba. Inoltre, la maggior parte degli ospiti (e Michael) guidavano delle golf carts personalizzate al ranch, quindi era meglio lasciar fuori autobus e macchine il più possibile..
Michael amava creare tensione e eccitazione in chi andava a trovarlo, e iniziava col far lasciare le auto fuori dal cancello. Gli ospiti venivano accolti da un dipendente del ranch in uniforme, e scortati su un treno privato verso il parco divertimenti. Questo per loro era un ottimo modo per entrare nel mondo di Michael.
Conosceva bene come raccontare una storia o preparare un palco, e il tutto iniziava li, dal cancello.
Non esiste nessun posto sulla terra come Neverland, e non sarà mai lo stesso, perché il suo creatore è andato. Tuttavia, sarà sempre pienamente vivo nella mia memoria.
Di recente ho letto che il ranch sarà messo in vendita. Credo di avere sentimenti contrastanti riguardo a questo, ma non c'è Neverland senza Michael, quindi suppongo che abbia un senso. Comunque, vorrei provare a dirvi cosa Neverland era, dalla musica, alle giostre, allo zoo. E io non riesco a pensare a nessuno di migliore, per raccontare queste storie di Brad Buxer.
