Michael Jackson's Neverland remains in limbo

LOS OLIVOS, Calif. — From outside the gates of Neverland Ranch, it appears as if Michael Jackson's former home and fantasyland has been frozen in time.
The backyard circus is long gone, but heartfelt notes placed by saddened fans at the property's entrance remain intact five years after Jackson's death. And visitors are still making the pilgrimage.
"I figured it would just be a closed gate, but I still wanted to see it for myself," said James Chen of Seattle, a fan who stopped outside Neverland during a recent road trip with his father.
While many Jackson ventures are thriving after his death, including a new album and Cirque du Soleil shows, there's not been similar movement at Neverland, despite rumors the property could be transformed into a Graceland-like homage or sold to the highest bidder.
Caroline Luz, spokeswomen for Colony Capital LLC, the real estate firm that bailed Jackson out after he defaulted on the $24.5 million he owed on Neverland, said the Santa Ynez Valley property about 150 miles north of Los Angeles is being maintained, but she declined further comment.
The estate was built in 1981 by real estate developer William Bone, who called it Sycamore Valley Ranch. Jackson paid $19.5 million for the hilly, oak- and sycamore-studded property in 1988 and rechristened it Neverland after Peter Pan's island dwelling. He soon added such over-the-top amenities as a zoo and small amusement park.
For nearly 20 years, Neverland was both Jackson's home and a pop culture landmark.
It's where Elizabeth Taylor lavishly married Larry Fortensky in 1991; where Oprah Winfrey famously interviewed Jackson live in front of 90 million viewers in 1993; and where then-wife Lisa Marie Presley and Jackson welcomed children from around the globe ahead of the United Nations' 50th anniversary in 1995.
Jackson later turned his back on Neverland after his 2005 acquittal on charges he molested children at the ranch, opting to live elsewhere in the world until his death in 2009.
"I guess they ruined it for my dad," Jackson's eldest son, Prince, told a civil court jury last year.
With no crush of fans or media throngs in years, and the amusement park just a whirling memory, Neverland's future remains unclear.
During a recent stop outside the property, a landscaper could be seen zipping along the driveway in a red buggy as a guard manned the security shack at the front gate. The wireless router inside was named "SVR Security," a nod to the property's original name.
"It has been really quiet," said local real estate broker William Etling in his office a few miles away in the wine-tasting town of Los Olivos. "There hasn't been any noise about stuff happening out there. I'm surprised they haven't sold it to someone else already."
Etling, author of the Santa Ynez Valley tell-all "Sideways in Neverland," wondered who the buyer of the $35 million, 2,600-acre property might be when a nearby 3,250-acre ranch recently sold for $22 million.
His only guess: Someone who really likes the King of Pop.

Ecco come è oggi Neverland, la ex casa di Michael Jackson
Quasi cristallizzato nel tempo. Lui non c'è più, non c'era più ancor prima della sua scomparsa, ma fa ugualmente un certo effetto vedere come appare oggi il ranch Neverland, la villa con annessa tenuta nella Santa Ynez Valley in cui Michael Jackson visse alcuni dei migliori anni della sua vita.
La casa fu costruita nel 1981 da William Bone, che la chiamò - come ricorda il "Daily Mail", che pubblica queste foto - Sycamore Valley Ranch. Il cantante nel 1988 firmò un assegno da quasi 20 milioni di dollari e ne fece la sua base, che battezzò come l'isola di Peter Pan.
Caroline Luz, portavoce di Colony Capital LLC che amministra la proprietà, ha riferito al "Mail" che il tutto viene costantemente curato ma non ha voluto aggiungere altri particolari. Neverland 2014
I waited awhile to write this blog. When I came back from my trip, there were so many pictures of beautiful Michael tributes, that I waited in the hope that the readers would look in depth at the pictures I took. This is of course, the sign of Figueroa Mountain Road, the street that has the entrance to Neverland. In the bushes behind the sign, there is a deer who lives there but she is quite shy with people.
We visited Neverland on 6/23/14. I booked a flight over Neverland for later on in the day. We drove over 400 miles that day alone! We drove westward, past Calabasas, until we hit Ventura and Santa Barbara. It was quite foggy in the morning, but here is a picture of the coastline.
This is highway 101, and it runs all the way up/down the coast of California.
Then we drove up through San Marcos Pass (Hwy 54). Below are photos of the stunning area going up the pass to Neverland. We ended up having to drive up and down twice (but that's another story) and both times I thought, I can see why Michael chose to live up here. So peaceful, beautiful and serene.

Finally, we're here. It was such an emotional moment. I have not been here since Michael was alive. There were a few fans outside of the gates, and a biking tour with around 10 bikers and a tour guide. He said very nice things about Michael, how incredible Neverland was, and how much Michael believed in helping children. He also misinformed the tourists, and told them that Michael did not own Neverland any more, that Colony Capital/Tom Barrack did. So I politely informed the tourists that Michael does still have a stake in Neverland, and that most fans believe the Estate is waiting for Michael's children to decide what they want to do with the property.
I also spoke with the guards behind the gates. One did not seem to understand Michael at all, and when I told him how envious the fans would be that he was allowed to see Neverland, he warmed up. He told me that Neverland was very brown, a fact I would see myself, but that the main grounds, the house, the lake and the train station area were very well maintained.
There is writing on every place you can imagine, in every language. Some dates back to 2009, others are more recent.

And then it was time to leave. I was very sad but excited because in a matter of hours, we would be flying in a helicopter over Neverland! Channel Island Flights pilots could not have been nicer!
This is Kevin, our pilot. I am scared of heights, and so I was somewhat nervous (ok terrified) but once we took off, I no longer feared anything. Like I stated above, Neverland looked very brown. However, Willa told us that there is a water shortage in all of California, and especially near Neverland.
This is Lake Chumash, 6 miles away from Neverland. Lake Chumash is the reservoir that provides water to Neverland and the surrounding areas. As you can see, the water levels are very, very low.
At first I was very upset because as you can see, Neverland from above looks very brown. However, once I realize that the was a severe water shortage, I realized that nothing can be done to utilize water for Neverland until the water supplies raise. California needs rain desperately.

The thirty minute ride felt like 5 minutes, even though I know it was 30 minutes because I timed it (lol). I wish I could have taken better pictures for fans who wanted to see what Neverland looks like. I plan on making this an annual event with a better camera for next year.

Ho aspettato un po' per scrivere questo blog. Quando sono tornata dal mio viaggio, c'erano così tante immagini di bei tributi a Michael, che ho aspettato nella speranza che i lettori avrebbero guardato in profondità le foto che ho scattato. Questo è, naturalmente, il segnale stradale di Figueroa Mountain Road, la strada che ha l'ingresso di Neverland. Nei cespugli dietro al segnale, c'è un cervo femmina che vive lì, ma è molto timida con le persone.
Abbiamo visitato Neverland il 23/06/14. Ho prenotato un volo sopra Neverland per dopo, nel corso della giornata. Abbiamo guidato oltre 400 miglia quel giorno da soli! Abbiamo guidato verso ovest, passato Calabasas, fino a quando abbiamo raggiunto Ventura e Santa Barbara. C'era abbastanza nebbia al mattino, ma questa è una foto della costa.
Questa è l'autostrada 101, e corre tutta la strada su e giù per la costa della California.
Poi abbiamo guidato attraverso San Marcos Pass (Hwy 54). Qui di seguito ci sono le foto della splendida zona che va salendo il passo per Neverland. Infine, siamo qui. E' stato un momento emozionante. Non sono stata qui da quando Michael era vivo. C'erano alcuni fans al di fuori dei cancelli, e un tour in bicicletta con circa 10 bikers e una guida turistica. Ha detto cose molto belle su Michael, come Neverland era incredibile, e quanto Michael aveva creduto di aiutare i bambini. Ha anche male informato i turisti, e ha detto loro che Michael non possedeva più Neverland, che Colony Capital / Tom Barrack lo aveva fatto. Così ho gentilmente informato i turisti che Michael ancora ha una partecipazione in Neverland, e che la maggior parte dei fans credono che l'Estate sia in attesa che i figli di Michael decidano cosa vogliono fare con la proprietà.
Ho anche parlato con le guardie dietro le porte. Uno non sembrava capire Michael del tutto, e quando le ho detto quanto sarebbero invidiosi i fans che gli fosse permesso di vedere Neverland, si è riscaldata. Mi ha detto che Neverland era molto arida, una realtà che vorrei aver visto da me stessa, ma che le cose principali, la casa, il lago e la zona della stazione ferroviaria erano molto ben mantenute.
Ci sono scritte su ogni luogo che si possa immaginare, in ogni lingua. Alcune risalgono al 2009, altre sono più recenti.

E allora è arrivato il momento di lasciare. Ero molto triste ma eccitata perché nel giro di poche ore, avremmo volato in elicottero sopra Neverland! I piloti dei voli Channel Island non sarebbero potuti essere migliori!

Vorrei poter aver scattato delle foto migliori per i fans che volevano vedere a cosa Neverland assomigli. Ho intenzione di renderlo un evento annuale con una fotocamera migliore per il prossimo anno.
