Michael Jackson's hologram: Creepy or cool?
CNN -- The King of Pop is back in the spotlight -- and not everybody is happy about it.
Despite the well of affection for the late Michael Jackson, his "return" in the form of a hologram at Sunday night's Billboard Music Awards didn't meet with unanimous approval.
The spectral Jackson performed "Slave to the Rhythm," one of the singles from "Xscape," a new album of posthumously released Jackson music. He was accompanied by actual, physically present dancers.
It was either the most amazing thing ever -- or super creepy, depending on which side of the fence you were viewing it from.
Recording artist Trevor Morgan tweeted "MICHAEL JACKSON HOLOGRAM IS RAD." New York magazine's Vulture assistant editor Lindsey Weber tweeted "turns out this michael jackson hologram is just as confusing and uncomfortable as we imagined."
'Digital formaldehyde'
Though the Jackson hologram was new, the debate over whether or not deceased celebs should be brought back is not. The Billboard "performance" also resurrected the discussion on whether fans even want to see their favorite artists as holograms.
In 2012 a hologram of the late rapper Tupac Shakur stunned audiences at the Coachella music festival. Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley have also been reanimated, after a fashion.
At the time, National Post writer Matt Gurney argued that dead stars should be allowed to rest in peace.
"The technology is undeniably impressive," Gurney wrote in 2012. "But Shakur is not a fictional character, owned by a studio, but a real-life human being. His work may be owned and licensed, but not his entire being. It is impossible to know how he'd have felt about being on that stage."
Soraya Nadia McDonald with The Washington Post wondered if this latest venture into digitally bringing artists back is the mark of more to come.
"The Jackson hologram raises some questions: Is this where we're headed?" she wrote. "Long after Madonna is gone (or perhaps, as with Jackson's hologram, not that long), can we expect to see the Material Girl performing 'Holiday' in a Grammys tribute, suspended in digital formaldehyde, just the way she was in 1983? And if so, what good are music videos?"
The technology seems to have gotten even better. As one person tweeted (we hope jokingly), "I am very scared why is Michael Jackson alive."
The performance had the full support of the Jackson family estate. According to Billboard, brother "Jackie Jackson started to tear up as he recalled watching 'Slave to Rhythm' in the audience at the MGM Grand Arena."
"When he started walking and dancing, I was teary-eyed," Billboard reported him as saying. "It's hard to please Michael's fans and Michael... I'm telling you it's amazing."
Weathering criticism
The performance was supposed to be a tightly held secret for the annual awards show, but that fell apart thanks to a lawsuit meant to stop it. According to the Los Angeles Times, companies Hologram USA Inc. and Musion Das Hologram Ltd. had filed suit against the show to stop the bit, claiming the show was using their technology without permission. Hologram USA had acquired the rights to the patents for the technology after Digital Domain, the company which created the Shakur hologram, filed for bankruptcy.
Oscar-winning Digital Domain had produced special effects for several films, including "X-Men: First Class" and "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button."
A judge ruled that Billboard could use the Jackson hologram.
The Washington Post's McDonald didn't find the technology to be all that precise.
"The effect was quite realistic, though at times just jerky enough that Jackson's hologram more closely resembled his representation in the Nintendo Wii game 'Michael Jackson: The Experience' than the man himself. In fact, it was actually slightly less realistic than the Tupac hologram that appeared at Coachella in 2012 (which was actually a projection, not a hologram), but the response was a little different."
Complaints in social media ranged from points about the hologram's youthful appearance (Jackson was 50 at the time of his death in 2009) to the thought that the digital representation's mouth appeared to be "lip-syncing."
One fan was forgiving, however.
"It's okay," sloth queen tweeted. "I forgive everyone for not making a perfect hologram i understand and accept Michael Jackson was too perfect to recreate."

Alexander Hardy says the King of Pop can't be duplicated—so hologram makers and record producers should give up trying
Whether you and I like it or not, we now live in a post-Hologram Michael Jackson society.
We had no say on the matter. After watching Michael ascend, excel, and expire, after marking our milestones with his music, we must now stand aside and watch as every nickel and every unreleased Jacksonian utterance are bled from Michael’s legacy.
This past Sunday, after much hubbub and hypothesizing, the estate of Sir Human Nature delivered a so-called “Michael Jackson experience” led by a hologram Michael performing his new-old song, "Slave to the Rhythm" at the Billboard Music Awards. There were tears.
"Michael Jackson, live at the Billboard Music Awards!" the commercials promised.
What follows is my “I wanna speak to a manager” moment.
First, the good: The staging and concept of what took place were cool enough. The dancers were crisp. Everything looked fresh, as choreographers Richmond and Anthony Talaeuga always did great work with and for Michael.
I do see the value of finding creative ways to let younger generations experience a piece of the glory of a time that possibly preceded their conception. Labels and estate guardians understand this, and have become remarkably adept at speaking to our fascination with the shiny, new, and technologically advanced. As such, we’re given diluted digital renditions of our dearly departed faves (see: ElectroPac live at Coachella in 2012) and tons of cosmically doomed posthumous collaborations. And uninspired drivel, such as the entire Michael album.
I have to remind myself that today’s pre-pubescent Bieberites have never lived through Michael doing Michael. They never lived through seeing Michael and an Elizondo-era Janet rehearse choreography with Tina Landon and Travis Payne before the “Scream” video premiered on MTV that Sunday in 1995. They didn’t call their friends on their house phone to recap, still processing what they had just seen. I did. Your kids will never have that experience. So, some may not get it. And that’s just fine.
But in the quest to keep the party going and the checks flowing, we have to remain rooted in reality.
We’re not talking about the legacy of Annie the Popeye’s Lady. We’re dealing with the memory of Sir Human Nature here. Have some decorum.
If you're bringing Michael back, give me a hologram of the Michael that spun himself a pile of unicorn dust as Mr. Steal-Your-Girl in the "Remember The Time" video. Let me see a pack of dancers hit some clean ass eight-counts behind a hologram of Michael at the 1995 MTV VMAs. Let me see Michael do Michael.
But don't trot out virtual Flex Alexander as late-life Michael a la This Is It with a 16-bit Sega Genesis face and expect me to Riverdance in jubilation. Michael’s fluidity was nowhere to be found on Sunday. Gone was the indescribable magic of seeing Michael come alive and stretch his feet out inside that groove, spontaneous yet locked in, masterfully melding grace and grit on stage. The Michael I saw on Sunday night had just eaten a veggie bowl from Chipotle and was perhaps full and a bit sluggish. I know a Diet Michael when I see one.
But you know the bigger issue that isn't being discussed here?
Michael Joseph Jackson is dead as hell. I can still feel the despair and disbelief that swallowed me and everyone I knew on June 25, 2009. You know where you were and what songs you played when it happened. We cried, wrote, and got bad tattoos about it. We sobbed through BET Awards performances about it. The funeral was nominated for a NAACP Image Award.
As the future Mr. Kim Kardashian once quoth, "MJ is gone. Our n*gga dead."
Past tense.
As such, it’s strange to be evaluating and discussing our visceral reactions to a new Michael Jackson Performance five years after that day. It’s creepy to be speaking about the recent events of Michael Jackson in May 2014. Because Michael Jackson is in the ground.
And so I’m having a hard time grasping why people who loved Michael and remind us at every turn that they have Michael’s best interests at heart would bastardize his likeness to push new albums five years after that day.
Michael was the perfectionist. His attention to detail was unparalleled. We have heard stories of him finding fault in vocals and choreography that sounded and looked pristine to everyone else. So, knowing that he fought for years for control of his work, and subscribed to an aesthetic that even his closest confidantes perhaps couldn’t tune into, seeing lawyers and label heads dream up this pixelated a*s Diet Michael under the guise of goodwill toward fans is disappointing. And f*cked up.
We shouldn’t expect or need new Michael Jackson Performances in 2014. His service to us is complete. Let him go.
Nothing was like a Michael Jackson Performance. It was either MICHAEL or it was whatever the hell else people were doing at the time. Despite L.A. Reid’s best intentions and highly convincing interviews, one cannot simply recreate a Michael Jackson Performance because of boredom and addictions that won’t fund themselves. You, NonMichael, can’t say, “He would do this.” Impossible.
Because of our inability to know exactly what grooves and notes would achieve the exact effect Michael wanted to achieve on that particular day, it is best to leave Michael Jackson music in the past tense. Let it be something we reflect on, not something that we anticipate. It is clear that Michael’s job creator powers are the gift that keeps on giving, but we ought to let him—and all his digital incarnations—rest in peace.

E se l'ologramma di Michael Jackson andasse in tour?
Per il momento è quasi fantascienza, ma è inevitabile che prima o poi questa tecnologia inizierà a svolgere un ruolo sempre più importante nella musica dal vivo.
Ai Billboard Music Awards di qualche giorno fa, Michael Jackson è stato "resuscitato" per una performance live di "Slave to the Rhythm", una canzone contenuta nel nuovo album "Xscape". Ovviamente sto parlando del suo ologramma, che si muoveva sul palco dell'Arena di Las Vegas in perfetta sincronia con i ballerini (quest'ultimi in carne e ossa).
Sì, ok, una semplice illusione, ma che ha riscosso un grande successo tra i fan di tutto il mondo. Considerando che la popstar non aveva mai eseguito la canzone dal vivo, è stata un'impresa mastodontica fare qualcosa che non risultasse macabro e pacchiano. A questo punto molti si chiedono: e se Michael andasse in tour per promuovere l'ultimo disco?
Potrebbe essere verosimile visto che "Xscape", composto da otto inediti rivisitati in chiave moderna da produttori del calibro di Timbaland e Stargate, è entrato senza troppa difficoltà nelle classifiche album di mezzo mondo, dimostrando che l'attenzione verso la leggenda del pop non è venuta meno col passare degli anni. Ma sareste anche disposti a pagare per vedere solamente il suo ologramma?
Sicuramente si tratta di una tecnologia pazzesca, che è riuscita a rendere realistico il balletto di Michael, con tanto di moonwalk. Ma è anche vero che Jackson era famoso per la spettacolarità dei suoi show dal vivo, per le coreografie e la messa in scena. I due album postumi hanno diviso i fan, ma un'esibizione live riuscirebbe a mettere tutti d'accordo?
Non c'è dubbio che prima o poi questa tecnologia inizierà a svolgere un ruolo importante nella musica dal vivo: dall'ologramma di Tupac al Coachella 2012 ormai non li ferma più nessuno, visto che i dischi non li compra più nessuno e i concerti sono la nuova manna dal cielo. Per il momento però rimane tutto un sogno: per la performance ai Billboard Music Awards, durata appena 4 minuti, è stato necessario un anno e mezzo di pianificazione.
Per realizzare un tour di almeno un'ora, che sia degno del Re del Pop, quanto ci vorrebbe? Ma soprattutto sarebbe rispettoso lucrare in questo modo sul talento di Michael, lasciato completamente nelle mani di biechi interessi pecuniari?

Ho letto in un altro articolo inoltre su HR ( Hollywood Reporter) che non solo non era un ologramma, ma una tecnologia nemmeno 3D , ma 2D...( mi sa che l'avevo già detto.. immagine modificata e riflessa su un pannello particolare.. ne più ne meno).
Alla faccia dell'innovazione.. se se va beh..

Non che sia esperta di sosia eh, sapete li evito, per cui, gli amatoriali invece li guardo, quelli che non si stravolgono faccia trucco capelli, diventando mostruosi.. perchè guardo la danza.. chiaramente.. il fisicaccio aiuta..

E sciocchezze banali, come tutto l'album Michael.
Devo ricordare a me stessa i Bieberites pre-pubescenti di oggi che non hanno mai vissuto Michael facente Michael. Non hanno mai vissuto e visto Michael e Elizondo - l'era di Janet che provava coreografie con Tina Landon e Travis Payne prima che il video "Scream" andasse in anteprima su MTV quella domenica nel 1995. Essi non hanno mai chiamato i loro amici sul loro telefono di casa per ricapitolare, ancora elaborando ciò che avevano appena visto. Io l'ho fatto. I vostri bambini non avranno mai questa esperienza. La fluidità di Michael era introvabile domenica. La magia indescrivibile di vedere Michael prendere vita e allungare fuori i piedi dentro quel solco, spontaneo ma dentro, fondere magistralmente la grazia e la grinta sul palco, era andata. Il Michael che ho visto nella notte di domenica aveva appena mangiato da una ciotola da Chipotle vegetariano ed era forse pieno e un poco lento. Conosco una Dieta di Michael quando ne vedo una.
Ma sapete qual'è il problema più grande che non si sta discutendo qui?

Niente era come una Performance di Michael Jackson. Fosse MICHAEL o qualunque altro diavolo di persona stesse facendo in quel momento. Nonostante le migliori intenzioni di LA Reid e le interviste molto convincenti, non si può semplicemente ricreare una performance di Michael Jackson a causa della noia e le dipendenze che non finanzieranno se stesse. Tu, NonMichael, non puoi dire: "Lui avrebbe fatto questo." Impossible.
A causa della nostra incapacità di sapere esattamente quali scanalature e note avrebbe ottenuto l'esatto effetto che Michael voleva conseguire in quel particolare giorno, è meglio lasciare la musica di Michael Jackson al passato. Lasciare che sia qualcosa su cui rifletterci su, non qualcosa da aspettarci. E' chiaro che i poteri da creatore di posti di lavoro di Michael sono il regalo che continua a dare, ma bisogna lasciare lui, e tutta la sua digitale incarnazione riposare in pace .

I always try to see things from different perspectives, to try to understand why people act or react as they do. But this hologram is so clearly false that it is completely incomprehensible to me that people can rejoice and be so amazed by what they saw. I ask myself; Seriously, have they ever seen Michael Jackson? I`m sorry, but I have to wonder ..... because if they have, they must see that this hologram was clearly not him.
Media can post as many photoshopped pictures they want, it does not make this hologram more authentic /real...........it just annoys me even more, that they continue to try to fool people

CNN writes; "It was either the most amazing thing ever -- or super creepy, depending on which side of the fence you were viewing it from".
Well, I would say that it was neither of these two options. No matter which side of the fence you saw it from ..... it was just lies and deception. However, what`s creepy, is the fact that they still claime that this was a hologram of Michael Jackson.. -

The sad aspect of this it's not only way it's spoken, but as this continue to belittle his art its originality.
Probably this is aim: to make it like many others, in order to confuse him better in the prevailing mediocrity of current music?
I don't know the reason.
I know they have deliberately deceived us, so that we were all watching "a double screened in 2D technology."

I'd like to understand the reason, why they take his talent and legacy and drag it down to a lower level. Is it because they will never be able to make anything of the same quality as what Michael did?
In fact, I just read an article on the technique used, and as you say it was not really a hologram ...... he calls it an old trick.

Fake photos, fake songs, fake holograms.
However, the community is now ,filled to infiltrates to payment and sycophancy free or obsessive (the latter arises from the need to justify one's idea at any cost, despite ridicule ) to allow the Estate to make their game regardless from reality of those fans (like us) who no want to digest these lies.

17-year-old Michael Jackson fan Brett Nichols didn't just win his school's talent show with his MJ routine ... he caught the eye of MJ's estate ... who have invited the kid to Las Vegas for a show ... TMZ has learned.
A rep for the Jackson estate tells TMZ ... the executors saw Nichols' impressive performance and were blown away ... so they put together a package to send to Nichols to show how much they liked his act.
The rep says they sent Nichols two CDs (no iTunes cards?) and an invitation for Brett and his family (mom, dad and sister) to all attend a performance of Michael Jackson ONE in Las Vegas.
We're told they contacted Nichols' principal, who in turn told Nichols and his family this afternoon ... who were predictably beyond excited.
Much better than some stupid trophy.

Il rappresentante dice di aver inviato a Nichols due CD (no cards di iTunes??) e un invito per Brett e la sua famiglia (mamma, papà e sorella) per assistere ad uno show del Michael Jackson ONE a Las Vegas.
Ci è stato detto hanno contattato il preside di Nichols , che a sua volta ha comunicato la notizia a Nichols e la sua famiglia questo pomeriggio ... cosa che ovviamente, lo ha reso felicissimo.
Molto meglio di qualsiasi stupido trofeo
