“ È molto bello conoscerti” mi disse Michael Jackson con la sua voce morbida e acuta quando ho vissuto la straordinaria esperienza di incontrarlo, inaspettatamente, a Orlando, Florida nel 2002, quando, per caso, stavamo mangiando nello stesso ristorante.
Partecipavo al concorso di Miss America Jr. Teen e l’ultima sera, io e la mia famiglia siamo andati a mangiare in un ristorante giapponese molto popolare, il Benihana ( Michael mi disse che era uno dei suoi preferiti).
Con la mia famiglia ottenemmo un tavolo quando, all’improvviso, sentimmo un sacco di confusione ad un tavolo vicino. Quando il nostro cameriere ci disse che Michael Jackson stava mangiando nella stanza accanto, non riuscivamo a crederci. Abbiamo abbandonato i nostri posti e il nostro cibo e siamo andati a vedere se era vero…. Era vero!!
Michael è stato così gentile e generoso, a volte anche timido. I proprietari chiusero il ristorante per evitare l’arrivo di altri clienti e Michael posò per le foto e parlò con tutti i presenti per più di due ore. Tutti erano in fila per incontrarlo. Era molto paziente e dolce, nonostante la folla e il caos vero e proprio. Ricordo in particolare la gente fuori dal locale che urlava e che batteva sulle porte a vetro per poter entrare a vederlo. Ho visto altezzose reginette di bellezza andare fuori di testa nel giro di pochi secondi pur di poterlo incontrare. Tutti intorno a lui parlavano a voce alta e urlavano, e non solo per ottenere la sua attenzione, ma anche perché eravamo tutti impressionati. Sentivo addosso un’euforia e un eccitamento tale che rivaleggiavano con quello che si prova a Natale o ai compleanni. Michael irradia energia e eccitazione!!!
Quando si incamminò per raggiungere la macchina che lo aspettava fuori, si riunirono centinaia di fans e quando la macchina partì, ho visto due donne svenire.
I suoi figli, che indossavano una maschera di Spiderman, erano insieme a lui e ad un entourage di circa 10 persone. Michael ha parlato con tutti e ci ha messo ore per raggiungere la limousine che era fuori dal locale. Ha firmato autografi e ha abbracciato tutti. Era molto rilassato e sembrava sinceramente felice.
Io, in realtà, fino a quel momento, non ero una grande fan di Jackson, conoscevo e apprezzavo la sua musica, ma da quando l’ho incontrato (nel mio primo anno di liceo) ho cominciato a difenderlo. L’uomo che ho incontrato non aveva niente a che vedere con l’uomo che viene descritto in tv. Il letterale pandemonio che lo circondava era irreale. Si deve davvero mettere in prospettiva il bene e il male del suo straordinario potere di star. Eppure, lui era ancora rimasto calmo, composto e innocente.
È stato davvero tragico sentire della sua morte. Lui è una grande star internazionale. Ho vissuto in Cina per quasi due anni e ho scoperto che il popolo cinese conosce universalmente due persone: Michael Jackson e Michael Jordan. A volte, mostrare la mia foto insieme a lui, soprattutto in Cina, dove era difficile per me comunicare, mi ha dato lo spunto per cominciare delle conversazioni.
Mi sento incredibilmente onorata di averlo incontrato. C'è semplicemente qualcosa in lui e nella sua presenza che è difficile da spiegare – è semplicemente speciale.

When I met Michael Jackson

"It's very nice to meet you too," Michael Jackson said to me in his very soft, high voice, as I had the amazing experience of meeting him, unexpectedly, in Orlando, Florida in 2002 when, by chance, we were eating at the same restaurant.
I was competing at the Miss America Jr. Teen pageant and on the last night my family and I ate at a very popular Japanese steakhouse, the Benihana (which Michael told me was one of his favorites).
My family got out of our seats when we heard a lot of commotion at a nearby table. When our cook told us that Michael Jackson was eating in the next room, we couldn't believe it. We left our chairs and our food to see if it was true. It was.
Michael was so gracious and generous, at times even shy. The owners closed the restaurant to additional customers and Michael took pictures and talked with people for over two hours. Everyone was standing in line to meet him. He was very patient and sweet despite the numerous people and downright chaos. I particularly remember people outside the restaurant's locked glass doors banging and shouting to get in to see him.
I saw poised beauty queens turn outright giddy in a matter of seconds of just seeing him. Everyone around him was talking loudly and screaming, not only for his attention, but because they were impressed. I felt a natural high and an excitement that rivaled Christmas and birthdays. Energy and excitement radiates from Michael! As he walked outside to a waiting car, hundreds of fans were gathered. As his car drove off, I saw two women pass out.
His kids, wearing spiderman masks, were with him along with an entourage of about 10 people. Michael talked with everyone and it took him hours to slowly walk out of the restaurant to the limo outside. He signed autographs and gave hugs. He was very relaxed and seemed genuinely happy.
I actually wasn't a huge Jackson fan, besides knowing him and appreciating his music, until I met him (my junior year in high school) and since then I defended him during the next years. When I met him he was nothing like those reports you see on T.V. The literal pandemonium that surrounded him was unreal. It really put into perspective the good and bad of his amazing star power. And yet he still remained calm, composed and childlike.
It's been really tragic to hear of his passing. He is such a huge international star. I've been living in China for almost two years, and I've found that Chinese people universally know two people- Michael Jordan and Michael Jackson. Sometimes showing the picture of me and him, especially in China where it is hard for me to communicate, has been a great conversation starter.
I feel incredibly honored to have met him. There's just something about him and being in his presence that is hard to explain- it's simply...special.
