Derek Emerson ricorda il Re del Pop
Cresciuto a Beverly Hills, California, Derek Emerson ha condotto una vita incantata.

Il padre di Derek era sempre il fotografo personale di Michael dal 1980 al 1993. Ha scattato la copertina dell'album Bad, ha lavorato sui video 'Beat It', 'Billie Jean', 'Bad' e "Smooth Criminal" ed ha viaggiato per il mondo- tre volte completamente - con il Re del Pop. "Tutte le foto rilasciate dal '82 al '94 erano per lo più il mio papà", spiega Derek.
All'età di 12, Derek incontrò l'allora 24enne Michael per la prima volta. Era in casa di Michael ad Hazlehurst - prima del Neverland Ranch - mentre Sam stava scattando foto ai guanti di Michael, quasi una dozzina di essi. "Io stavo giocando a Frogger e, tutto ad un tratto, ho sentito questo peso sulla schiena," Derek racconta. "Era il serpente domestico di Michael, Muscles.
Lui si è messo lì ed a iniziato semplicemente a ridere. Era un po' burlone. "E' stato lo stesso giorno, dice che Michael ha preso lui e la figlia di Quincy Jones per un giro in golf cart.
Quando Sam lavorava, Derek era sempre il benvenuto per rilassarsi. Lui giocava con i videogiochi e Michael si univa a lui nelle pause. "Mi ricordo che andavo a Neverland, il negozio di caramelle, la giostra con i cavalli e parlavamo della mia bicicletta o della scuola", dice Derek. "C'era un treno intorno alla proprietà e grandi fortezze con cannoni ad acqua. Io rimanevo a giocare ed a lui piaceva venire a giocare, troppo. E' stato davvero come uscire con un altro ragazzo che non voleva crescere."
Derek ricorda il senso dell'umorismo di Michael. "Ricordo che una volta a New Orleans, probabilmente nel '84, mentre eravamo in albergo dopo lo spettacolo. Eravamo usciti fuori con Sugar Ray Leonard e Stevie Wonder ed abbiamo deciso di prendere qualcosa da mangiare. Stevie disse: 'Dammi le chiavi e guido io.' Michael pensava che fosse così divertente."
Grazie al lavoro di suo padre ed i tour di Michael, Derek ha visto il mondo. Come assistente di Sam a 18 anni, Derek installava le luci e ordinava le diapositive. "Mio padre ha scattato quaranta rullini di pellicola per un periodo di due ore", ricorda. "E' stato a Tel Aviv, Turchia - ed in Europa due volte, per mesi ogni volta. Sono andato a qualcosa come 40 e più shows una estate! Ed io ero al Victory Tour con i fratelli Jackson nel 1984."
"E' stato un bel periodo per stare in giro, quei dieci anni dal '82 al '92, quando lui era la cosa più calda del mondo", dice Derek. "Stai parlando del tutto esaurito al Wembley Stadium, 70.000 persone in sette spettacoli di fila?" Derek ridacchia ricordando quei giorni. "Non tutti possono dire lo stesso, suppongo."
Quando giunse la notizia, appena cinque anni fa ad oggi, che il Re del Pop era morto, Derek era a fare sci d'acqua in South Carolina. "Ho chiamato mio padre e non riuscivo a crederci", dice. "Posso ancora vedere negli occhi di mio padre quando si parla di questo. Lui (il padre) era una persona ha trascorso una lunga parte della sua vita con lui. Questo lo fa ancora rimanere senza parole." (N.D.T. letteralmente "lo soffoca")
Derek dice che è ancora difficile credere che Michael è andato via. "Era il più grande performer del mondo e un super bravo ragazzo che mi ha trattato bene - e mi ha rispettato abbastanza per sapere chi ero. Lui mi ha sempre chiesto cosa stavo facendo nella mia vita. Si è sempre ricordato di me."

Growing up in Beverly Hills, California, Derek Emerson lead a charmed life.
“It was nice to always have an all-access pass,” he laughs.
His father, photographer Sam Emerson, worked the rock music scene where Derek met the likes of Stevie Ray Vaughn, Cheap Trick, Fleetwood Mac, The Police, Billy Idol and Elton John. The list, he says, “Goes on and on.”
But there was that one performer, one icon, that Derek fondly recalls. On the fifth anniversary of his untimely death, Derek reminisces about Michael Jackson.
Derek’s dad was Michael’s personal still photographer from 1980 to 1993. He shot the album cover for Bad, worked on the ‘Beat It,’ ‘Billie Jean,’ ‘Bad’ and ‘Smooth Criminal’ videos and traveled the world – three times over – with the King of Pop. “Any photos released from ’82 to ’94 were mostly my dad’s,” Derek explains.
At the age of 12, Derek met a then 24 year-old Michael for the first time. It was in Michael’s house on Hayvenhurst – before Neverland Ranch – that Sam was shooting photos of Michael’s gloves, nearly a dozen of them. “I was playing Frogger and, all of a sudden, I felt this weight on my back,” Derek recounts. “It was Michael’s pet snake, Muscles. He set it there and just started laughing. He was a little prankster.” That was the same day he says Michael took him and Quincy Jones’ daughter for a golf cart ride.
When Sam was working, Derek was always welcome to hang out. He’d play video games and Michael would join him on breaks. “I remember going to Neverland, to the candy shop, riding rides and talking about my cycling or school,” Derek says. “There was a train around the property and big forts with water cannons. I’d be playing and he’d come play, too. It really was like hanging out with another kid who just didn’t want to grow up.”
Derek recalls Michael’s sense of humor. “I remember one time in New Orleans, probably in ’84, where we were in the hotel after a show. Sugar Ray Leonard and Stevie Wonder were hanging out and we wanted to pick up something to eat. Stevie said, ‘Give me the keys and I’ll drive.’ Michael thought that was so funny.”

Thanks to his dad’s job and Michael’s tours, Derek saw the world. As Sam’s assistant at 18, Derek would set up lights and sort slides. “My dad was shooting forty rolls of film over a two-hour period,” he recalls. “That was in Tel Aviv, Turkey – and Europe twice, for months at a time. I went to something like 40 plus shows one summer! And I was on the Victory tour with the (Jackson) brothers in 1984.”
“It was a good time to be around, that ten-year time period from ’82 to ’92, when he was the hottest thing in the world,” Derek says. “You’re talking about selling out Wembley Stadium, 70,000 people in seven shows back to back?” Derek chuckles reminiscing about those days. “Not everyone can say that, I guess.”
When news came, just five years ago today, that the King of Pop had died, Derek was water skiing in South Carolina. “I called my dad and just couldn’t believe it,” he says. “I can still see it in my dad’s eyes when you talk about it. That was someone he spent a very long part of his life with. It still chokes him up.”
Derek says it’s still hard to believe Michael is gone. “He was the biggest performer in the world and a super nice guy who treated me well – and respected me enough to know who I was. He always asked about what I had going on in my life. He always remembered me.”
