The Enigma Mirror

I recently described Michael as an ‘anarchic utopian.’ As a political appellation, I’m not sure it’s an accepted label; nevertheless, it got me thinking about Michael’s true political leanings.
To say he was a liberal is perhaps an obvious statement, yet as with most people, there existed elements of his persona which didn’t comfortably fit within this description. The ambiguity over his sexuality, for example, is tempered by the somewhat archaic attitudes of his brothers who recently, in an interview with UK newspaper The Guardian, tossed around the term “faggot” as if it were a regular piece of their vernacular (those deep-ingrained, Deep South ignorances are hard to escape, I suppose. Not that I’m suggesting that’s an excuse). Though rather than temper, considering Michael’s adulthood desire to isolate himself from them, his brothers’ attitudes could in fact bolster the case for his liberality.
However, one area in which he wouldn’t typically be identified as a liberal is in the issue of abortion: something he was quite clearly opposed to his song, Abortion Papers. Although, once again with his contradictions and capriciousness, in Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’, Michael unapologetically states, “Don’t have a baby, if you can’t feed your baby”. Perhaps Michael was liberal to the point of acknowledging the right to freedom for foetuses, as opposed to the mother and father that conceived it. Considering his love for children and potential, I’m inclined to believe this to be the case.
During the eighties and early nineties, Michael was twice entertained at the White House by the Republican Party – though this may well have been a case of opportunism in the case of the presidents in question: they had a chance to meet Michael Jackson, and they took it – after all, Michael’s behaviour was certainly not conducive with the mantra of eighties greed and excess, what with his record-breaking philanthropic ventures and penchant for purchasing from charity shops (a trait instilled in him since his poverty-stricken childhood and one of the many behaviours inherited from the ever-gentle Katherine). And although happy to be entertained by the Republicans, it was the Democrats, during the Clinton Gala, that he chose to entertain and fundraise for.
(Prince, on the other hand, was a screaming true blue, as evidenced indisputably on his Around The World In A Day album: “Whoever said that elephants were stronger than mules?”, to name but one example. I like to think one of the two great artists’ many clandestine meetings having involved them separate off the two political polarities of the time – the communists and the capitalists – and deciding to work in cahoots to promulgate a message of universal peace.)
Michael ‘s response to the 1993 allegations was a lesson in socialist propaganda. The robot from Moonwalker, fresh from murdering hundreds of faceless drones, mutated into the Stalin-esque statue; the teaser for the associated HIStory album was a direct lift of Hitler’s Triumph Of The Will; the Earth Song video was more than influenced by the 1972 Soviet propaganda video, Ave Maria; the spoken outro to Stranger In Moscow translates as, “”Why have you come from the west? Confess! To steal the great achievements of the people, the accomplishments of the workers”; and who can forget the controversy over the lyrics in They Don’t Care About Us?
All of this, without even mentioning Michael’s contribution to black politics. His use of the black panther imagery in Black or White, his consistent use of the black panther fist in his videos, and the gall to advertise the logo of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee logo, consisting of an interracial shaking of hands, during his record-breaking Super Bowl halftime performance.
Another, more insidious way that Michael became embroiled in politics, was through his relationship with Sony, and his rallies against its head at the time, Tommy Mottola – who he described as the devil. Whenever Michael attempted to use his art to tell the story of his victimisation at the hands of the establishment, such as in the short film, Ghosts (premiered at the Cannes Film Festival), the project would suffer from poor promotion and distribution. This anti-Michael tactic was repeated for the Invincible campaign, and also in the release of box sets and compilations, that would feature all of Michael’s albums except for HIStory. All a result of anti-Michael political manoeuvres.
I suppose the things we can agree on is that Michael’s life was certainly tumultuous and he genuinely believed in the possible realisation of a universal idyllic state. So, in that sense, the description ‘anarchic utopian’ fits him well. But Michael was, of course, in many ways an enigma. It would be impossible to pigeonhole him as anything in particular. But the beauty of an enigma is in its openness to interpretation: if no-one knows the secret, it becomes a mirror; a reflection of the perceiver’s desires. Except, with our enigma, we also had evidence. Evidence that he was generous to a fault, and obsessed with the notion of using his fame to promote a message of peace.

Di recente ho descritto Michael come un 'utopista anarchico.' Trattandosi di una denominazione in stile politico, io non sono sicuro che sia un'etichetta accettabile, ma questo, mi ha fatto pensare alle vere e proprie inclinazioni politiche di Michael.
Dire che era un liberale è forse un'affermazione ovvia, ma come con la maggior parte delle persone, esistevano in lui elementi poco inerenti o comodi all'interno di questa descrizione. L'ambiguità sulla sua sessualità, per esempio, è contrapposta agli atteggiamenti un po 'arcaici' dei suoi fratelli che recentemente, in un'intervista al quotidiano britannico The Guardian, palleggiano sul termine "frocio", come se fosse un termine estraneo alla quotidianità del loro parlare nativo (giustificato da quella profonda ignoranza del Sud alla quale è difficile sfuggire, immagino. Ma non sto suggerendo che questo possa essere una scusante). Anche se piuttosto con tranquillità, considerando l'età adulta, il desiderio di Michael di isolarsi da loro, dagli atteggiamenti dei suoi fratelli, potrebbe in realtà rafforzare l'idea sulla sua liberalità.
Tuttavia, uno dei settori in cui non viene palesemente identificato come un liberale è la questione dell'aborto: in Abortion Papers, definisce piuttosto dichiaramente il suo essere contrario. Anche se, e ancora una volta , grazie alle sue contraddizioni , in Wanna Be Startin 'Somethin', Michael afferma sfacciatamente, "Non deve avere un bambino, se non può nutrire il suo bambino". Forse Michael era liberale al punto di riconoscere il diritto alla libertà di abortire, ma era contrario quando c'era invece una madre e un padre coinvolti nel concepimento . Prendendo in considerazione il suo amore per i bambini e le sue potenzialità, io sono propenso a credere che questa fosse la sua opinione.
Durante gli anni ottanta e i primi anni novanta, Michael è stato invitato alla Casa Bianca dal Partito Repubblicano - per quanto questo potrebbe essere stato un caso di opportunismo protratto dai presidenti in questione: avevano avuto la possibilità di incontrare Michael Jackson, e hanno afferrato al volo l'opportunità - nonostante, il comportamento di Michael non fosse certo quello di essere favorevole con il mantra degli anni ottanta :avidità ed eccesso, quanto bensì il contrario quello cioè legato ad iniziative filantropiche e la propensione ad acquistare in negozi di beneficenza (un tratto instillato in lui fin dalla povera infanzia e uno dei tanti comportamenti ereditati dall'amorevole madre, Katherine). E per quanto possa essere stato felice di essere ospite dei repubblicani, era chiaramente un democratico, infatti, fu durante il Galà per Clinton, che scelse di accettare di esibirsi per raccogliere fondi .
(Prince, d'altra parte, è sempre stato un dichiarato democratico, come dimostra indiscutibilmente nel suo album Around The World In A Day ,: "Chi ha detto che gli elefanti erano più forti dei muli?"( n.d.r l'asino o mulo è il simbolo dei democratici d'america, e l'elefante rappresenta i repubblicani), tanto per citare un esempio.. Mi piace pensare che questi due grandi artisti ,così estranei alle politiche popolari dell'epoca - i comunisti e capitalisti - si incontrassero clandestinamente per decidere di lavorare insieme alla diffusione di un messaggio di pace universale).
La risposta di Michael alle accuse del 1993 fu una lezione di propaganda socialista. Il robot di Moonwalker, fresco dall'aver ucciso centinaia di droni senza volto, si trasforma in una statua in stile Staliniano; l'anteprima per l'album HIStory associata ad una sorta di Triumph (Trionfo) Of The Will( della Volontà) di Hitler (n.d.r Syl Utilizza altri due album di Michael in senso un pò ironico per spiegare questa parte dell'anteprima dell'album History.. Off the Wall in realtà.. ma è solo per spiegarvi l'ironica visione per come è descritta), il video di Earth Song , influenzato dal video di propaganda sovietica del 1972 ,Ave Maria, l'intro parlato di Stranger In Moscow si traduce in questo senso:" Perché siete venuti da ovest? Confessa! Per rubare le grandi conquiste del popolo, le conquiste dei lavoratori ", e chi può dimenticare la polemica legata al testo di They Don't Care About Us?
Tutto questo, senza nemmeno menzionare il contributo di Michael alla politica dei neri. L'uso della pantera in Black or White, l'uso costante della pantera e del guanto nero nei suoi video, e il coraggio di pubblicizzare il logo degli Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee ( Comitato di coordinamento degli Studenti Non violenti), unificato al far scuotere mani interraziali , durante il suo show, nel break del Super Bowl.
Un altro modo, ma più sottile che identifica come Michael fosse coinvolto nella politica, è rappresentato dal suo rapporto con la Sony, e le sue manifestazioni , al momento, contro Tommy Mottola - che descrisse come il diavolo. Ogni volta che Michael ha tentato di usare la sua arte per raccontare la storia della sua vittimizzazione per mano dell'industria, come nel cortometraggio, Ghosts (in anteprima al Festival di Cannes), il suo progetto soffriva di scarsa promozione e distribuzione. Questa tattica" anti-Michael" venne utilizzata anche per la promozione di Invincible, ed anche durante l'uscita di cofanetti e compilation, di tutti gli album di Michael, tranne che per History. Tutte ( tattiche) consequenziali alla politica" anti-Michael".
Suppongo che una delle cose sulla quale possiamo concordare è che la vita di Michael era certamente tumultuosa e sul fatto che lui credeva sinceramente nella possibile realizzazione di uno stato idilliaco di pace universale. Quindi,e in questo senso, la descrizione di ' utopista anarchico' gli si adatta bene. Ma Michael era, naturalmente, per molti aspetti un enigma. Sarebbe impossibile incasellarlo in una qualunque definizione. Ma la bellezza di un enigma è nella sua apertura all' interpretazione: se nessuno conosce il segreto, diventa uno specchio, un riflesso dei desideri di chi li percepisce. Fatta eccezione per il nostro di enigma, ne abbiamo anche avuto la prova. La prova che era generoso per difetto, e ossessionato dall'idea di utilizzare la sua fama per promuovere un messaggio di pace.

Molto tecnico , questa volta.. il nostro Syl.. oserei dire quasi schematico.. come se avesse un pizzico di timore ad addentrarsi troppo profondamente nelle tendenze politiche di MJ.. eppure arriva alla fine di , se pur non esaustivo argomento, e ti strappa via.. un pezzettino di cuore.. come sempre .
