The room in the photo that we are standing in is called Record One, Studio B. There are only two studios at Record One, and we booked them out for nearly a year on that project - plus a few other rooms in town. (Studios are often simply called "rooms" in the industry.)
Record One is part of Ocean Way Recording - one of the few remaining mega-studio complexes still surviving. Many, many great records have come out of this studio - but it would take an enormous post to take your through that list.
This was Bruce Swedien's room during Dangerous, although Bill Bottrell also worked in Studio B now and then. Teddy Riley set up shop a couple miles away at Larrabee Studios, so there was a fair bit of commuting from studio to studio, which was quite different from the Bad album, which took place almost exclusively at Westlake Studios in Hollywood.
Working with Michael on a daily basis was never short on surprises. There were popcorn fights, hot wing contests and a parade of special VIP guests. (Hot wings you ask? We had a full kitchen at Record One and a few of us enjoyed cooking, so we would see who could make the hottest wings imaginable. Michael loved this diversion and often grabbed a few of the testers and offered his vote.)
The funny thing (well, one of many) about working in a recording studio is that studios, due to their banks of electronic gear, can be very warm...even hot. The coldest day outdoors would have no effect on the need for continuous air conditioning in a studio. So... I usually wore shorts. Yes, the style is dated and dorky at best, but I was buried away in a recording studio, not shopping on Rodeo Drive.
Michael of course loved the warm studios, because he was always cold - year round. He would always wear long sleeves and almost always black corduroy pants. He always looked good, but some days he might have a photo shoot or an interview, so his wardrobe team would go a bit further. (Often Michael Bush would stop by the studio with new outfits for Michael to see and try on, but I don't think Bush was there on this particular day.)
I don't remember exactly why I decided I needed a photo with Michael on this day, but I saw that shirt with the metal bands across the front and I was like, "Come on... that's just way too cool for anyone to actually wear!!" Of course, he pulled it off amazingly well. Again, I don't remember the exact conversation, but I asked if I could grab a quick photo with him in that shirt, and of course he was cool about it. I pushed the chairs out of the way and he stood next to me, and suddenly went on tip-toe. I asked, "What are you doing??" He laughed and he said he wanted to be as tall as me! A quick click of the camera caught the moment.

Questa era la stanza dove lavorava Bruce Swedien durante la registrazione anche se Bill Bottrell ha anche lavorato presso lo Studio B di tanto in tanto. Teddy Riley si era sistemato ad un paio di miglia di distanza, al Larrabee Studios, quindi c'era un po' di pendolarismo da studio a studio, molto diverso da quello dell'album 'Bad', che ha avuto luogo quasi esclusivamente al Westlake Studios di Hollywood.
Lavorare con Michael ogni giorno poteva riservare molte sorprese. Ci sono state guerre di popcorn, gare di alette calde di pollo e una sfilata di speciali ospiti VIP. (Chiederete perchè le alette calde? Avevamo una cucina completamente attrezzata nel Record One e ad alcuni di noi piaceva cucinare, così abbiamo deciso di vedere chi preparava le ali più calde che si possano immaginare. Michael si divertiva molto con queste gare e spesso provava alcuni dei piatti per dare il proprio voto).
Il divertimento (uno tra i tanti) a lavorare in uno studio di registrazione è che a causa delle apparecchiature elettroniche fa molto caldo. Persino nella più fredda giornata all'aria aperta c'è la necessità di utilizzare l'aria condizionata di continuo ed è per questo motivo che indossavo abitualmente dei pantaloncini corti. Sì, lo stile è antiquato nella migliore delle ipotesi ma ero chiuso in uno studio di registrazione non in giro a far compere per Rodeo Drive..
Michael, naturalmente, amava gli studi caldi perché sentiva sempre freddo .. tutto l'anno. Di solito indossava camicie a manica lunga e quasi sempre pantaloni di velluto neri. Aveva sempre un bell'aspetto, ma alcuni giorni c'era in programma un'intervista o una sessione di foto e allora il suo abbigliamento era più ricercato. (Spesso, Michael Bush arrivava in studio con vari abiti da mostrare a Michael e farglieli provare, ma non credo che Bush fosse lì quel giorno in particolare).
Non ricordo esattamente il motivo per cui ho deciso che mi serviva una foto con Michael quel giorno, ma ho visto la camicia con quelle bande metalliche in tutta la parte anteriore e ho pensato, 'Hey, questo è qualcosa di molto 'cool' da indossare”. Naturalmente gli stava a pennello.
Ancora una volta non ricordo l'esatta conversazione ma gli ho chiesto se potevo fare una foto insieme a lui con quella camicia e ha detto di si. Ho spinto le sedie da una parte e lui si è messo accanto a me, all'improvviso si è alzato in punta di piedi. Gli ho chiesto: 'Che fai?' e lui ha risposto ridendo che voleva apparire alto come me!
Un rapidissimo scatto della macchina fotografica ha catturato quel momento.
