20' Years ---> HIStory
Let's set the stage.
In 1994 the world was not as innocent as perhaps it was a decade earlier. Rwanda was hit with a brutal massacre. Sarajevo was under attack by the Serbs, Chechnya was having some separation issues with Russia, and the US was sending the military to the Persian Gulf.
Nancy Kerrigan got beaten with a pipe, OJ Simpson was involved in the world's slowest car chase, arrested and charged with murder and Kurt Cobain tragically ended his own life. Tom Hanks became Forrest Gump and Whitney Houston won record of the year with "I Will Always Love You". And Nelson Mandela was elected president of South Africa in the country's first inter-racial election.
All in the same year that we were in New York recording an album called HIStory.
Michael married a very pretty Lisa Marie Presley (a complete surprise to us), and we all enjoyed having her in the studio. She made him happy, and I think he did the same for her. They were fun to be around.
Michael had been through a crushing amount of stress those previous years since Dangerous. I can't imagine many people going through what he went through, and coming out the other side with as much joy, laughter and love as he did.
As we plowed through the production of the album, we were told it would be a quick three or four month project. I good-naturedly nodded my head in agreement, knowing it would take much longer - Michael's level of perfectionism was not something to be rushed.
Originally it was to be a "Greatest Hits" with a couple new songs. But the material was so strong, and Michael had so much to say that it was becoming a larger project. Brad Buxer reminded me of the day that he, Michael and I were in one of the lounges at The Hit Factory, and I looked at Michael and said, "You need to just do a full album of new music - there is too much good stuff here." That certainly was not the moment that the double-album was hatched, but I am glad to have at least shared my opinion on the matter.
In the spring of 1995, after mixing and mastering were completed, we knew we were sitting on an amazing musical product. Bruce Swedien and Michael were so driven to perfection that I was actually sent to the CD plant to inspect the process and get some initial discs to take back to the studio for testing. In fact, we tested the first batch of CDs, cassettes, LPs and - Minidiscs. Remember those?
I had a full listening rig set up at Hit Factory, and I would evaluate one after an other after another. I had heard some of those songs for nearly 15 months by then. And in the case of "Earth Song" and "Come Together", nearly a decade.
During one of those visits to a CD plant in New Jersey, I heard the news of the Oklahoma City bombing, killing so many people including a daycare full of innocent children. What a messed up world.
Michael used to talk about wanting to help every child in need, wanting to fix things that needed to be fixed. He was a dreamer, and he dreamed of a better world. He dreamed of a world filled with laughter and music, and in 1995 his contribution to our world was HIStory.
The greatest hits assortment truly was jaw-dropping in its depth of musical enormity, but Disc 2 was what people were waiting for. And the first thing Michael wanted them to hear was the duet with his sister Janet. He had a lot of stuff to get off his chest, and "Scream" was a good place to start.
By the time HIStory was released, I had known Michael for about 11 years. Was he the same young man I originally met during Captain EO? Yes, and no. But mostly yes. He had been hurt, he had been mocked, he had been bullied. But he still laughed. He still threw water balloons out of the studio window. He still was generous with his time. He still insisted that we bring fans into the studio and made sure they were fed. He still sent my family beautiful gift baskets when each of our daughters was born. He was still Michael.
Being so close to these albums, being a part of their birth, their growth and their graduation/introduction to the public is hard to explain, almost hard for me to understand. Michael moved so fast, he worked so hard, he pushed the team, the musicians and the technology as hard as possible, but he did it all with a smile. The work was enjoyable. The challenges were fun. Of course we can manage 14 studios across the country at once (I think). Of course we can harness nearly 200 digital tracks of music and nearly 200 moving faders in two studios side-by-side with miles of cable and millions of dollars of recording equipment and have it all come together flawlessly - just give us a couple hours to work out some of the details first.
"They Don't Care About Us" has become an anthem for many people around the world.
To this day I get chills when I hear "Stranger In Moscow", one of my favorite MJ songs of all time.
"Earth Song" points out so vividly the world that surrounded us in 1994 and 1995, and it remains just as strong today.
"2Bad" always makes me remember the insane video Michael produced for it.
I built a giant speaker rig for him to dance to on the set, and it was played so loud that I replaced many blown speakers to keep up with his desire to feel the music. "Hurt me, Brad!!" I still can't listen to the song a modest volume - it must be loud.
"Childhood", "Little Susie" and "Smile" are pure magic.
Each song on HIStory represents Michael wanting to tell you something. He had been through hell, and the world was not as soft as it was during "Off The Wall". He was older, and, like I said, he wanted to get some stuff off of his chest. But he was still Michael. He starts the record with a scream, but ends it with a smile.
I am proud of each of project, song, mix, demo, video, tour, amusement ride and special project I worked on with Michael. But I am especially proud of the "HIStory" album. It was an amazing time, and I am grateful and blessed to have been a part of it. Looking back twenty years later, I am just as proud as I was the first time I saw it for sale at Tower Records on Sunset.
Happy 20th Anniversary to the HIStory album, and a deep, sincere "thank you" to Michael for letting me be a small part of his history.

Cerchiamo di ricordare gli eventi.
Nel 1994 il mondo non era così innocente come forse era un decennio prima. Il Rwanda era appena stato colpito da un genocidio di massa. Sarajevo era sotto attacco dai Serbi, la Cecenia aveva non poche difficoltà nel suo volersi separare dalla Russia, e gli Stati Uniti avevano appena inviato i propri soldati nel Golfo Persico.
Nancy Kerrigan era stato picchiato con una spranga, OJ Simpson era stato coinvolto nel più lento e mediatico inseguimento mai visto al mondo, per poi essere arrestato e accusato di omicidio ,e Kurt Cobain era morto tragicamente. Tom Hanks era diventato Forrest Gump e Whitney Houston aveva vinto il premio disco dell'anno con "I Will Always Love You".Nelson Mandela era stato eletto presidente del Sud Africa , nella prima elezione inter-razziale del paese.
Tutto questo avveniva nello stesso anno in cui eravamo a New York a registrare un album, chiamato HIStory.
Michael aveva appena sposato la bella Lisa Marie Presley (una vera sorpresa per noi), ed è stato molto divertente per tutti noi averla in studio. Lei lo rendeva felice, e penso che anche lui la rendesse felice. Era bello essere nei paraggi e guardarli insieme.
Michael , veniva da periodi di stress davvero enormi, iniziati negli anni in cui era andato in tour per l'album Dangerous. Non riesco a immaginare chi sarebbe capace di passare in un simile inferno, riuscendo ad uscirne senza perdere il gusto della gioia, delle risate e mantenendo la fede nell'amore come ho visto fare a lui.
Appena ci siamo addentrati nel progetto di produzione dell'album, ci venne subito detto che si sarebbe trattato di un impegno breve al massimo di tre o quattro mesi. Io, feci un cenno di assenso,ben sapendo che ci sarebbe voluto molto più tempo - il livello di perfezionismo di Michael non era un qualcosa che potesse avere mai nulla a che fare con la fretta.
In origine , avrebbe dovuto essere un "Greatest Hits", con un paio di nuove canzoni. Ma il materiale era talmente spettacolare, e Michael aveva così tanto da dire che il progetto si trasformò in qualcosa di molto più ampio. Brad Buxer mi ha ricordato il giorno in cui lui, Michael ed io eravamo in una delle sale dell'Hit Factory, ho guardato Michael e gli ho detto: «dobbiamo proprio fare un album nuovo e completo - perchè c'è troppa roba buona qui " Certamente l'idea iniziale per il doppio album non era quella, ma sono contento di aver detto almeno come la pensavo.
Nella primavera del 1995, a remix e masterizzazioni complete, sapevamo di essere seduti su un prodotto musicale sorprendente. Bruce Swedien e Michael erano così intenti nel cercare la perfezione che mi mandarono all'impianto CD per ispezionare il processo e prendere i cd confezionati da portare in studio per un test. In realtà, testammo solo un primo lotto di CD, cassette, LP e - Minidisc. li ricordate?
Avevamo un impianto stereo completo all' Hit Factory, e avrei voluto testarli tutti. Ma avevo sentito quelle canzoni già da 15 mesi, da allora. E nel caso di "Earth Song" e "Come Together", da quasi un decennio.
Durante una di queste visite a un impianto CD nel New Jersey, sentì la notizia della bomba a Oklahoma City, che aveva ucciso molte persone fra cui molti bambini. Che mondo incasinato.
Michael parlava di voler aiutare ogni bambino bisognoso, voleva sistemare qualunque cosa di ingiusto in questo mondo. Era un sognatore, e sognava un mondo migliore. Sognava di un mondo pieno di risate e di musica, e nel 1995 il suo contributo al nostro mondo era HIStory.
La scelta dei più grandi successi inseriti nel primo CD lasciava a bocca aperta per la profondità e valore musicale in esse contenute, ma il secondo CD era quello che le persone stavano aspettando davvero. E la prima canzone che Michael voleva che le persone sentissero era il duetto con sua sorella Janet. Aveva parecchie cose da dire e "Scream" era un ottimo punto di partenza.
Nel momento in cui HIStory è stato rilasciato, conoscevo Michael già da 11 anni. Era ancora lo stesso giovane che avevo incontrato durante le riprese di Captain EO? Sì e no. Ma soprattutto si. Era stato ferito, era stato preso in giro, era stato vittima di bullismo. Ma sorrideva ancora. Gettava ancora pallocini pieni d'acqua fuori dalle finestre dello studio. Ed era diventato ancora più generoso nel tempo. Insisteva ancora che i fan potessero essere invitati nello studio di registrazione e si preoccupava che venissero sfamati..Ha inviato cesti pieni di doni ad ogni nascita di ciascuna delle mie figlie . Era ancora Michael.
Essendo stato così in prima linea e vicino a questi album, essendo stato una parte della loro nascita, crescita e introduzione al pubblico, è difficile spiegare, è difficile ancora per me capire. Michael cambiava posto di lavoro continuamente, e lavorava sodo come nessun altro, ha spinto la squadra, i musicisti e la tecnologia più in alto che poteva, ma ha fatto tutto questo con il sorriso. Il lavoro era sempre assolutamente piacevole. Le sfide erano divertenti. In modo del tutto naturale siamo stati abbastanza abili da sincronizzare il lavoro in 14 monolocali diversi in tutto il paese in una sola volta (credo). In modo del tutto naturale abbiamo avuto a disposizione 200 tracce digitali di musica e quasi 200 fader che passavano fianco a fianco con miglia di cavi e milioni di dollari di apparecchiature e siamo riusciti a farli passarli tutti assieme senza grandi problemi - previo avere un paio d'ore per analizzare i dettagli.
"They Don't care about us" è diventato un inno per molte persone in tutto il mondo.
Ancora oggi mi vengono i brividi a pelle quando sento "Stranger In Moscow", una delle mie canzoni preferite di Michael e di tutti i tempi.
"Earth Song", sottolinea in modo così vivido il mondo che ci circondava, nel 1994 e nel 1995, e rimane altrettanto importante oggi.
"2Bad" mi fa sempre ricordare il video folle che Michael aveva realizzato su quella canzone e per la quale avevo costruito un impianto di autoparlanti enormi e da utilizzare sul set, e che è stata suonata ad un volume talmente alto da costringermi a sostituire nel mentre gran parte degli amplificatori, per tenere il passo con il suo desiderio di sentire la musica ad un determinato volume. "Fammi male, Brad !!" Non riesco ancora ascoltare la sua musica ad un volume accettabile - deve essere alto.

Ogni canzone di HIStory rappresenta la voglia di Michael di dire qualcosa. Era passato attraverso l'inferno, e il mondo non era tenero con lui o non come lo era stato per "Off The Wall". Era più vecchio, e, come ho detto, aveva alcune cose da dire, da sputare fuori. Ma era ancora Michael. Inizia a cantare con un urlo, ma finisce con un sorriso.
Sono orgoglioso di ogni progetto, canzone, mix, demo, video, tour, giro di divertimento e progetto speciale al quale ho lavorato con Michael. Ma sono particolarmente orgoglioso dell'album "HIStory". E 'stato un momento incredibile, e sono grato e felice di averne fatto parte. Guardando indietro venti anni dopo, sono ancora fiero , e come lo sono stato la prima volta che l'ho visto in vendita al Tower Records sulla Sunset.
Buon 20mo anniversario all'album HIStory, e un profondo, sincero "grazie" a Michael per avermi permesso di essere una piccola parte della sua storia.
