Michael’s Women. From Jane Fonda to the Queen of England, the ladies court pop’s prince.

Maybe you can’t judge a book by its cover, but you can judge a man by his friends. At least if he’s Michael Jackson. Even the stars are starry-eyed. Hollywood newest trend, it seems, is to be a friend of Michael.
To millions of love-struck teenaged girls across the country, he is the stuff dreams are made of, as pure as the driven snow – makeup, glove, androgyny and all. The Thriller would never break their hearts.
“A man who is very masculine-looking is intimidating and frightening to a young girl. However, an androgynous one is not as frightening. A young girl can relate to him easier,” offers Dr. Joyce Brothers. “With hunks [like Tom Selleck and Richard Gere], you’ll find their fans are older women, who are adjusted in life.”
Jackson’s effeminate mannerisms are a turn-off for men, believes biographer Nelson George, author of the best-seller The Michael Jackson Story. “A lot of men can’t identify with him because they think he’s gay. Everything about Michael goes against the standards of being masculine,: he says.
“Women, though, like to smother and mother him. To them, he comes across as someone who needs protection and reassurance. They sympathize with his shyness and would very much like to be his friend.”
Jackson really doesn’t need men in his life, according to Dr. Brothers. “He has a lot of brothers [five] who act as close friends,” she say. “And when a man has that many brothers, he often doesn’t need a lot of male companionship.”
His true friends are few – and they’re all famous women. His career denied him an ordinary childhood, he once said; his fame now denies him ordinary friends. So the Peter Pan of Pop heads a mutual admiration society that contains some of Hollywood’s biggest names.
Keeping track of Jackson’s famous friends is like trying to count the rhinestones on his glove. Getting into the charmed circle is even harder. America’s Camelot era queen, Jackie Kennedy Onassis, had made it; likewise Britain’s reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth. But as a rule, only family members, child stars and screen legends qualify.
Here’s the first edition of the who’s who of women in the life of Michael Jackson.
MICHAEL’S SISTERS
“He love Fred Astaire and I love Ginger Rogers – or so big sister LaToya, 27, once said is the difference between Michael and her. As kid they “used to tape dance at home and pretend we were them.”
LaToya has always been the sister closest to Michael. When he was on his own filming The Wiz in New York City, Mom sent LaToya to keep him company.
She is his soul mate within the Jackson family – a shy, private woman who likes to be alone. They both follow strict vegetarian diets at home and occasionally work on songs together (One of them, “Nighttime Lover,” also produced by Michael, appeared on her 1980 solo LP.)
Currently, LaToya’s taking a second shot at singing stardom, working on a new LP with music impresario Joe Isgro. But this time, she’ll do it on her own. The superstar reportedly is thrilled.
Two other women round out Michael’s tight family circle: baby sister Janet, 17, and eldest sister Maureen, 33. Both are drawn close to their brother by their Jehovah’s Witness faith (Maureen and Michael are the only two Jackson children actually baptized in the faith).
Maureen has yet to make a showbiz mark like her sisters, other than performing with the family in Las Vegas. Janet, on the other hand, is already a showbiz vet. Her easy comic delivery landed her roles on TV sitcoms Good Times and Different Strokes, while Michael gave her pointers on her solo music career. And like any older brother and kid sister, the two are known to tease one another mercilessly when horsing around.
KATHERINE JACKSON
Jackson family matriarch Katherine, 53, is “the most important woman in my life,” says Michael. Insiders say his exemplary booze-and-drug-free life is witness to her firm-yet-loving religious upbringing. Together, mother and son attend Jehovah’s Witness meetings and spend quiet hours at home studying the Bible, which Michael knows inside out.
At 25, the multimillionaire heartthrob still lives at home with Katherine and sisters LaToya and Janet. He is supervising a million-dollar renovation of their Tudor mansion, a labor of love for his mom. “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do for her,” he says simply.
Like any mother, Katherine worries. Michael’s frenzied followers are of special concern. “There are so many of them,” she says of the love-struck legion that stands vigil outside their Encino, Calif., estate. “You have no idea what’s really going on in their minds. That’s why it’s going to be so hard for my son to get a wife.”
Spoken like a true mother.
BROOKE SHIELDS
It’s a match made in heaven – not to mention a publicist’s delight. Brooke Shields, 18, and Jackson have been friends for nearly two years. It was a well-kept secret before the couple burst onto the dating scene. The pair were front and center in January at the American Music Awards and again in February at the Grammys.
Michael says it’s their common child-star heritage that makes them so compatible – an essential in all his friendships with girls his own age.
While Brooke hawks Calvin’s and hits the books at Princeton, Jackson pitches Pepsi and protects his recluse image. Both hate cigarettes, drink and drugs; both live at home with Mom. Neither has had a serious romance. They’re the Annette and Frankie of the ‘80s. Now if only some clever film producer could get them to co-star in a teenybopper romance.
DIANA ROSS
“He could be my son,” chirped songbird Diana Ross, friend, mentor – and the woman Michael would like to marry.
“I love her,” he confessed to an Ebony interviewer, ignoring their 15-year age difference (she’s 40).
Diana has been a fan ever since she saw the 10-year-old Michael, then the front man for his family’s Jackson 5, strut his stuff on a stage in his hometown of Gary, Ind. Since then their professional relationship has grown into a friendship that hasn’t let up.
Nor has Diana stopped casting a protective eye toward her former protégé (who returned the favor by penning the smash single “Muscles” for her). “We just talk, talk, talk, about everything,” said Jackson of his chosen confidante, the only woman he shares all his “deepest, darkest secrets” with.
About the strange fascination she has for him, Diana once said: “There was an identification between Michael and me. I was older, he kind of idolized me, and he wanted to sing like me.”
Sing like her he already does. Now he may have created the ultimate tribute to Diana. Thanks to plastic surgery (a radically reduced nose) and the art of makeup (big, black-outlined almond eyes, tweezed eyebrows and a pouting mouth), some say he even looks like her.
STEPHANIE MILLS
When Jackson was stationed in New York filming The Wiz, he befriended another young black star – actress Stephanie Mills, 25. The pudgy teen was then wowing audiences as Dorothy in the Broadway version of The Wiz. Jackson became one of her biggest fans, and he sought her out to tell her so.
Mature for her age, Stephanie hit it off immediately with him. They spent hours talking about the business, music, the pressures of fame. Michael also became Stephanie’s idol; she plastered her room with pictures of him. Some say it was love, but to Michael it was friendship. When The Wiz wrapped, Michael packed his bags and headed home to California.
KATHARINE HEPBURN
Oddly enough, it’s Katharine Hepburn who’s giving the reclusive singer acting tips. Michael admires the lady for her vitality and charm on screen – and her passion for privacy. Watching old Hepburn-Spencer Tracy films is a favorite pastime of his. He began a pen-pal relationship with Hepburn and got the thrill of a lifetime when she actually invited him into her Manhattan apartment. There, they talked about the old days of Hollywood, and she showed him her very private collection of Tracy’s personal possessions. Even Michael was shocked when Hepburn – an avowed rock music detractor – accepted his offer to attend her first concert, a Jacksons show at Madison Square Garden.
The surrogate mother relationship continues. She encourages his acting dreams and calls him regularly to see how he is faring followings his burning accident.
LIZA MINNELLI
Gossip is the common thread that draws Liza Minnelli and Jackson together. Like two yentas, they will spend hours on the phone or in person talking about who’s doing what to whom or whatever. Two kids with show business in their blood, when there’s nothing left to gossip about, they practice dance steps.
Liza is another byproduct of Michael’s New York stay seven years ago. Part of her attraction to him then was that she is the daughter of Judy Garland – one of his favorite movie musical stars. But the friendship has since grown quite real. It was “nervous Nellie” Minnelli who flooded the hospital with phone calls after learning of her pal’s recent accident while filming a Pepsi commercial.
JULIE ANDREWS
The name of Julie Andrews stands out in Jackson’s Technicolor fantasies. Movie musical stars are the stuff his dreams are made of, and Andrews ranks high on his list, along with Judy Garland. The Peter Pan of Pop thrills to one Andrews role in particular – nanny Mary Poppins, a woman with an amazing umbrella that enabled her to fly. One of his favorite tunes of all time is “My Favorite Things” from The Sound of Music. No truth to the rumor he plans to update it with an ‘80s beat and produce the song for Boy George.
SHIRLEY BROOKS
Perhaps the greatest guardian of the Michael Jackson myth is long-time family friend Shirley Brooks, a devoted Jackson aide. By her own admission, Brooks (who’s not pictured) is proud to act as his protector.
“He doesn’t and won’t make statements about his sex life because he believes – and he is right – that it is none of anyone else’s business,” she proclaims. “I never let anyone say anything about his sex life in my presence.”
Shirley paints a picture of Michael as a deeply religious boy who is close to his mother and who has a heart of gold. During the filming of the “Beat It” video, she was nearly moved to tears when Michael painstakingly signed every photo in a crippled girl’s picture album. “You have never seen anybody so happy as that girl,: she said later.
TATUM O’NEAL
One of the few “scandals” ever to surround Jackson took place with former girlfriend Tatum O’Neal, now 20. Ryan’s daughter just had a way of bringing out the fun, wild side in Michael, and the said “scandal” involves a nude nighttime sauna romp the two are alleged to have taken after getting bored at a Playboy party. (Michael insists “we weren’t naked….we had on bathing suits.”)
His romance with Tatum was taking off even as rumors circulated that Jackson was the gay lover of actor Clifton Davis. (Absolutely untrue, he says,) To this day, Michael insists that Tatum was the most important – and the only – girl on his life. When asked by Ebony magazine whether he’d had any experience with any other women, he replied, “No, just Tatum.”
To this day, Michael has maintained his friendship with O’Neal. Both have grown up since their “kid” days of skating at the Roxy, catching a movie or sharing dreams. She now has a steady boyfriend, Kennedy kinsman Anthony Shriver; Michael has his career.
JENNIFER HOLLIDAY
Regular backstage visits from Michael Jackson were commonplace while Jennifer Holliday was appearing in L.A. with her Broadway smash, Dreamgirls. Three or four times a week he would take his place in the audience, hum the tunes and study the production sequences as if entranced. Then he’d pop backstage for some small talk with Jennifer before vanishing into the night. Michael marveled at her booming voice and her amazing stage presence as the wronged member of a Supremes-like singing group.
BARBRA STREISAND
What happens when an irresistible force (Jackson’s genius) meets an immovable object (Barbra Streisand’s temperament)?
The age-old question will be answered when the two superstars meet in the recording studio later this year. With luck , a hit record will be produced, the fruit of Jackson’s songs and production and Streisand’s booming voice.
Just how soft-spoken, easy-going Jackson will fare in the lion’s den with tough, strong-willed Streisand is anyone’s guess. Maybe he can get some inspiration from Daniel.
JACKIE ONASSIS
It took the influence of a Jackie Kennedy Onassis to convince Jackson to do the unheard of: bare his soul in a book.
Jackie O, hardly a trendie, nevertheless, has been tuned in to Michael’s music thanks to kids Caroline and John Kennedy, fans since his Jackson 5 days. Mrs. O actually renewed an earlier acquaintance with the singer last fall by paying him a visit in California.
She returned shortly after with a book deal from Doubleday, her employer.
The deal (worth well over $ 1 million) will have Michael and Jackie working exclusively together. He’ll provide his life story, poems, drawings and dance secrets; she’ll provide the polish as editor. When not hard at work, then can slip away to her favorite Manhattan lunch haunts or browse in movie memorabilia shops, which they’ve already done as part of their campaign to “get to know one another better.”

JANE FONDA

As proof of how close he has become with all the Fonda’s, Michael was with Shirlee, Henry’s wife, Jane and Peter the night the actor passed away in 1982.
It was Jane who coined the now-famous “Peter Pan” analogy about Michael and is lobbying to get him the film role as proof of her strong belief in him.
QUEEN ELIZABETH
Princess Di may have a hankering for Boy George, but Queen Elizabeth takes a fancy to Michael Jackson. No pop pushover, the Queen spotted the kid’s talents when he and his Jackson brothers were on their 1972 tour of Europe.
This was no average command performance, mind you, but one for the Royal’s Silver Jubilee gala in Glasgow, Scotland. The Queen reportedly was spotted at the concert tapping her toes and snapping her fingers.
VILMA BANKY
Jackson’s movie tastes are, to say the least, eclectic. From Oklahoma! to E.T. to the silent romances of Vilma Banky.

The Hungarian screen siren of the ‘20s often teamed up with heartthrob Ronald Colman for films like Two Lovers (1928), about thwarted passion. Blonde vamp Vilma raised “emoting” to a high art – before the talkies did her in.
VALERIE BERTINELLI
Valerie Bertinelli may have been the secret weapon that helped make “Beat It” such a success. The 24-year-old actress – also a child star who grew up in front of millions as perky Barbara on TV’s One Day at a Time – is one of Michael’s close Hollywood friends, which in turn led to his friendship with rock guitarist Eddie Van Halen, her husband.
Jackson convinced the heavy-metal maestro to do a solo on “Beat It”. That neat trick gave “Beat It” the rock punch it needed to become a crossover hit and potentially the industry’s biggest hit ever.

SHIRLEY BROOKS
Forse la più grande custode del mito Michael Jackson è l'amica di famiglia di lunga data Shirley Brooks, una devota aiutante di Jackson . Per sua stessa ammissione, Brooks (che non è nella foto) è orgogliosa di agire come sua protettrice.
"Lui non fa e non farà dichiarazioni sulla sua vita sessuale perché crede - ed ha ragione - che non è affare di nessun altro", proclama. "Non ho mai permesso a nessuno di dire nulla sulla sua vita sessuale in mia presenza."
Shirley dipinge un quadro di Michael come un ragazzo profondamente religioso, che è vicino a sua madre e che ha un cuore d'oro. Durante le riprese del video di "Beat It" , si era quasi commossa fino alle lacrime quando Michael ha faticosamente firmato ogni foto in un album di una ragazza storpia. TATUM O'NEAL
Uno dei pochi "scandali", che hanno mai circondato Jackson ha avuto luogo con l'ex fidanzata Tatum O'Neal, ora 20enne. (Assolutamente falso, dice lui,) Ancora oggi, Michael insiste che Tatum è stata la più importante - e l'unica - ragazza della sua vita. Quando gli è stato chiesto dalla rivista Ebony se aveva avuto qualche esperienza con altre donne, egli rispose: "No, semplicemente Tatum."
Fino ad oggi, Michael ha mantenuto la sua amicizia con O'Neal. Entrambi sono cresciuti dal loro giorni di pattinaggio al Roxy da bambini, la visione di un film o la condivisione dei sogni. Ora ha un ragazzo fisso, Anthony Shriver, parente dei Kennedy; Michael ha la sua carriera.
JENNIFER HOLLIDAY
Le regolari visite al backstage di Michael Jackson erano all'ordine del giorno quando Jennifer Holliday era a Los Angeles con il suo tormentone di Broadway, Dreamgirls. Tre o quattro volte a settimana prendeva il suo posto in mezzo al pubblico, canticchiava le melodie e studiava le sequenze di produzione come in trance. Poi andava nel backstage per due chiacchiere con Jennifer prima di sparire nella notte. Michael era meravigliato dalla sua voce tonante e dalla sua presenza scenica incredibile come un membro sbagliato di un gruppo stile Supremes.
BARBRA STREISAND
Cosa succede quando una forza irresistibile (il genio di Jackson) incontra un oggetto immobile (il temperamento di Barbra Streisand)?
L'annosa questione si risolverà quando le due superstar si incontreranno nello studio di registrazione entro la fine dell'anno. Con la fortuna, sarà prodotto un disco di successo, frutto delle canzoni di Jackson e l'interpretazione e la voce incredibile della Streisand.
Come il pacato, alla mano Jackson se la passerà nella tana del leone con la dura, volitiva Streisand non può saperlo nessuno. Forse può avere qualche suggerimento da Daniel.
JACKIE ONASSIS
C'è voluta l'influenza di una Jackie Kennedy Onassis per convincere Jackson a fare qualcosa di inaudito: mettere a nudo la sua anima in un libro.
Jackie O, molto alla moda, tuttavia, è stata sensibilizzata alla musica di Michael grazie ai figli Caroline e John Kennedy, suoi fan fin dai tempi dei Jackson 5 . Mrs. O in realtà ha rinnovato una precedente conoscenza con il cantante lo scorso autunno con una visita in California.
Tornò poco dopo con una proposta di un libro da Doubleday, suo datore di lavoro.

JANE FONDA
La celebrità più amica di Jackson e fan è Jane Fonda, 46anni. "La sua musica è energica. E 'sensuale. Si può ballare a, lavorare, fare l'amore, cantare ", dice con entusiasmo.
E' stato Jackson a convincere Fonda a mettere li suoi esercizi "Workout" su vinile. Il disco di platino che ha avuto in cambio l'ha dato a lui. Lei lo invitò ai luoghi delle riprese del New Hampshire di Sul lago dorato, dove si trovò a condividere il suo bungalow e imparò anche i trucchi più fini di pesca da suo padre, Henry Fonda. Come prova di quanto intimo è diventato con tutta i Fonda, Michael era con Shirlee, moglie di Henry, Jane e Peter la notte in cui l'attore scomparve nel 1982.
E' stata Jane, che ha coniato " Peter Pan"l'ormai famosa analogia con Michael e sta facendo pressioni per procurargli un ruolo in un film come prova della sua grande fiducia in lui.
QUEEN ELIZABETH
La Principessa Diana può avere un desiderio per Boy George, ma la Regina Elisabetta ha preso una cotta per Michael Jackson. Non appassionata di pop , la Regina ha riconosciuto il talento del ragazzo, quando lui e i suoi fratelli Jackson erano in 1972 tour in Europa.
Non era la solita performance, sia chiaro, ma una per il Royal Silver Jubilee gala a Glasgow, in Scozia. E' stato riferito che la Regina è stata vista al concerto battere i piedi a tempo e schioccare le dita.
VILMA BANKY
I gusti cinematografici di Jackson sono, a dir poco, eclettici. Da Oklahoma! a E.T. ai film muti di Vilma Banky.

La sirena degli schermi ungheresi degli anni '20 ha spesso collaborato con il rubacuori Ronald Colman per film come Two Lovers (1928), sulla passione contrastata. La bionda vamp Vilma ha portato l' "emozione" a grande arte - prima che lo facesse il parlato.
VALERIE BERTINELLI
Valerie Bertinelli potrebbe essere stata l'arma segreta che ha contribuito a rendere "Beat It" un tale successo. La 24 enne attrice - anche lei un 'attrice bambina che è cresciuta davanti a milioni ( di telespettatori ) come la pimpante Barbara in " One Day A Time " - è una dei più stretti amici di Michael di Hollywood, che a sua volta ha fatto amicizia con il chitarrista rock Eddie Van Halen, suo marito.
Jackson ha convinto il maestro heavy-metal a fare un assolo su "Beat It". Questo fantastico trucco ha dato a "Beat It" l'energia di cui aveva bisogno per diventare un successo e potenzialmente il più grande successo di sempre del settore .
